Chaos-Two's head snapped up and they made a revelation.
It made so much sense. Vargas training them, giving them responsibilities, even offering to change their form in a mutation. He didn't do it out of any other reason than to relieve the guilt he felt.
Chaos-Two didn't know if that was better or worse.
Silently, they got back to work, their mind numb. They pushed rocks up and over, their arms shaking despite them purposefully picking up the smaller ones. Eventually they had to stop and sit down, so exhausted they could barely move. If they hurt now, they were going to be in agony tomorrow.
But for now they were still and tired, their head aching with a growing migraine and their body so worn they doubted they'd be able to climb out of the hole.
Vargas glanced at Chaos-Two in some surprise, the short laugh that erupted from him a genuine one.
When it was done--when all the rocks had at last been lifted from the hole--Chaos-Two would find an Oilstone lying at the bottom of the pile. It was unharmed by the weight that had been atop it--possibly laid in carefully so as not to be damaged. But it was there, for his spawn to find.

Chaos-Two looked up in surprise at the laugh, a little unsettled. But they said nothing, and kept going, sluggishly digging away stones and debris. They froze as they uncovered the stone, staring at it with an emotion they couldn't identify.
Gently, they picked it up, holding it in their hands like one would a delicate flower, careful not to break it.
Was this another thing they didn't need to understand now? Or did Vargas want them to do something with it?
An irony, he reflected, that this lesson was so vastly different from the first he'd told Chaos-Two to reflect upon--a lesson it might not now, or ever, learn. But this one held its own importance, and he wanted it finished and done with, and learned well.

A child. A wrench thrown into plans that they'd carefully discussed with Khavur the day before. But... it was a child. A new beginning, a chance at creating something worthwhile.
They clambered out of the hole and stood on wobbly legs, so exhausted they almost wanted to curl up right then and there and pass out. But they refrained, standing on three legs with one hand clutching the stone still, holding it tightly to their chest.
Or not.
The important thing was that it was there, for it to think about. And another lesson had been given.

If given permission, Chaos-Two would nod and sigh, sagging as they slumped towards their nest to collapse upon and fall asleep, so worn out they were afraid they'd sleep all through the next day, even.
They clambered into their nest and collapsed, setting the stone next to the one that held a kooru within, staring at the two tiny things for a moment. They curled up in a ball and tucked their limbs in, snuggled up nice and warm in their nest, the small part of Draco that they were well and truly safe in.
Exit unless stopped
He made his way off in silence, mind briefly covering the last couple hours. Chaos-Two had bitten down any frustration--if it had felt it, he hadn't really seen it. This was good--although he'd have rather seen it erupt, or seen it tamp it down. If nothing else, that would've given him an idea of its threshold, and he could have tested if it truly had control--as it stood, he might have simply not pushed it far enough.
But he wasn't about to go and get Draconua again for another round. She needed more lessons in self-control than Chaos-Two did.
Well, this was a start: a firm foundation, rules now laid out, control established. Or so he hoped. If Chaos-Two overstepped again, it would be from within the clear framework he had now provided, rather than a confused and muddled mess of anger, and he could address it more directly.
It was ironic, upon reflection, just how much Order was required to efficiently run Chaos.
