It was a new day in Canis. The cave was alight with the sounds of midmorning in Canis: still, dripping water, the crack of bones off in the distance, and scurrying rats. And it was a particularly terrible day to be born in Canis. Especially if you were one Fleas. A tiny canine pup in a misshapen sardonyx chrysalis, idly kicking her feet in empty dreams.
The chrysalis crumbled slowly, falling apart in random bits. A bit off the side here, a bit off the top there, and the amniotic fluid began to drain through the crack. As cold invaded her space, for definitely not the last time, Fleas awoke from her chrysalis. Her snaggletooth shifted, and she opened her mismatched eyes. The chrysalis fell to pieces immediately. It tumbled around her, suddenly wanting out, Fleas tried to flee, but slick from the amniotic fluid, she tumbled and fell with it, landing heavy in the dirt.
A sizable chunk tumbled from atop her, landing hard enough to bruise her snout. And the newborn jackal yelped. Loud. Fleas, dizzy, gathered her legs under her. She tried to stand, her weak limbs somehow holding enough strength between them to rise to her wobbly height. Well this was new. Curious brown and white eyes flicked around her surroundings, ears twitching at slight sounds, and head darting about anything that caught her eye. At this age, it was everything.
