The tunnel was quiet. Peaceful. It seemed empty, the dust of ages settling slowly down its brightly-lit walls.

It was only a faint drumming, at first, that disrupted this--but the drumming abruptly erupted into a full percussion of slapping feet and scratching claws on rock, and heaving gasping breaths.

An alligator, dark-skinned and thick-scaled, half-grown, came galloping around the corner from Polaris, bouncing off the rough wall of the tunnel before finally slowing and turning, mouth agape. His pupils were dilated into wide, round black spheres, and it was his panting that was loudly audible.

He looked back behind himself, tail curling in a u-shape as he turned; the crow on his head shifted to keep her balance.

"BAT?" called Dragon hoarsely. "Tal'at?" He took a couple steps back toward Polaris, hesitant--if the creature hadn't made it out, he'd go back for him. He tried to think fast.

They're supposed to meet us here. I think. I think this is the place. Maybe they're not done yet. But if Tal'at is harmed we need to go back. He's blind. He offered to help and he's blind. There's something about him--Eve's here?

Dragon crossed his eyes, trying to look up to ensure that the crow was still firmly on his head; he couldn't see her, but he could feel her there. That was reassuring, at least. Now to make sure that the bat was safe...

...And then, to wait for the others.

"I'll fly back out there if he doesn't come out," said the crow. Her breathing was still quickened from diving down onto the alligator's head, though it sounded faintly like whistling than actual breathing.

Carefully the crow crawled down onto Dragon's snout so he could see her, nestling down and staring into Polaris. With a sharp squawk, she spoke. "What do we do if Usui and Ghanyarah found nothing, or they got attacked and they're too hurt to continue?"

She was worried for them-- or more specifically the komodo dragon. Now that she thought about it she didn't even particularly care for the lion at all. At length, she sighed and twisted her head to peer at Dragon, head tilting to one side as she waited for a reply.

It was frankly the more horrifying few minutes of Tal'at's life. Even worse than that giant Heartbeat-- which, in remembering, the young bat couldn't help but compare the leathery Dragon to the giant Heartbeat outside of Pisces. He had nearly lost the Dragon when he heard his voice calling for him: BAT, Tal'at?

With a few squeaks of relief, the bat scrambled down the tunnel, clipping a light hanging from the tunnel's ceiling and stumbling through the air, but eventually he did get to where Eve and Dragon were. He flopped down on the earth, shaking his orb-head to clear his brain.

"Are they gone? Are we safe? The No Heartbeats," he fretted, shivering as he twisted his head around, clicking loudly and nervously. He was looking for those golems, sure, but also any possible threat. "... Should we look? For the others."

Dragon shot forward purely by instinct the moment he saw Tal'at flailing, smashing into lights and falling from the air. He leaned down to try and rather delicately scoop the bat up, assuming he didn't flee--though he wouldn't bite down, wouldn't close his jaws. It was an almost automatic maneuver, something he did without thinking, the way an alligator would lift its young in its mouth.

The grip he was trying to get was the sort where the bat could then crawl out and join Eve atop his head, or... well, he could just stay in there, if he wanted. If even Dragon managed to snag him up.

Regardless, a moment later, the alligator quizzically tried to speak--whether there was a bat in his jaws (and thus, carefully) or not.

"...Nothing is following," he answered softly, peering down the tunnel the way they'd come. The rock-creatures--the not-heartbeats, as the bat had phrased it--seemed to be either lost or too slow to have pursued.

Still, Dragon waited, peering back the way they'd come.

He left the planning to Eve--the little crow was smart, after all, and maybe she'd have some idea of how to proceed from here. For the time being, Dragon simply watched their backs.

Eve flinched a little as Dragon lurched forward after Tal'at, looking up at the bat. As the alligator held the orb-face in his mouth, the crow approached the edge of the gator's mouth to lean down and carefully grab Tal'at with her beak, pulling him up to sit the bat next to her. She lifted a talon to gently pat him.

"... Well," began the crow, looking out to Polaris and then twisting her head around to look down the tunnels, climbing up onto hat-position on Dragon's head. "... Good. We're safe here, I think. It looks like we're the only ones here."

The crow chittered thoughtfully. She wasn't sure where to go from here - especially if Ghanyarah and Usui were still searching - and if they were hurt, there was the agreement to find the other group, so surely they were fine. She looked down at the snout of Dragon and Tal'at with a sigh.

"Anyone hungry?"

Tal'at didn't resist the touches of the others, simply going stiff as the Dragon scooped him up and held him in his mouth. It was a weird... Bizarre thing... For someone to do. He felt the sharp teeth of the alligator's mouth and did his best not to tempt him to snap his jaws closed, at least until Eve gently pulled him up and out of the mouth and on top of the leathery skinned animal.

"Oh thank you," he chirped finally, still quite motionless as he settled on to his new perch. He didn't like moving a lot when he was nervous, and he was incredibly confused by what they were doing. It hadn't hurt him, though...

When the bird asked if he was hungry, a gentle smile came up on his features. "I am hungry... Eve eats meat? Dragon, as well?" He pondered, reflecting on his knowledge of the other birds he knew. "I eat fruits. I'll seek them. You should hunt." All said and done, he focused and tried to find some sort of plant growth near them... Anything that might bear fruit. As he did so, his gem began to glisten a faint green, the magic beginning to sense the world around him.

Tal'at wasn't exactly into eating cave rats, unfortunately.

Dragon listened rather blankly to the two creatures atop his head.

Food...? Are they talking about food? How did we get from--from collar-searching and... being chased by no-heartbeat rock-things to food?

For awhile--as a nonplussed alligator will do--he simply lay there on the floor of the tunnel, silent and motionless. Eve had stumped him. His mind was blank. None of this made sense! He was hungry, but now wasn't the time for that, surely...? Maybe the little creatures needed to eat more often than he did?

The alligator slowly turned, tail dragging behind him as he shuffled toward the Eridanus side. But he couldn't hear Ghanyarah, and the others--couldn't see them, nor smell them.

"...I don't think they are here yet," he rumbled quietly, thoughtful. "We could look for the collar here, or look for food. Or go see if they are all right, first..." Here he paused, uncertain. If the two were hungry, surely they should eat, but this tunnel looked rather rocky and dry. He wasn't sure if there'd be rats here, where surely there would be food in Eridanus. Rats, and--whatever the bat ate? What were "fruits?"

"...What are fruits?" he asked rather stupidly, still standing in the middle of the tunnel. "There'll be food in Eridanus--unless fruits are rocks?" he added. He genuinely wasn't sure, and he tried--and failed--to peer up at the bat, briefly. Did the thing eat stone?

"We could look for the collar and food at the same time," rasped the crow. "Eridanus is pretty big. They might be still looking and they're not hurt or anything."

The bird looked around the caves almost critically. "I've seen fruit before. They're this crusty-thing that's usually a circle," she said. Spotting a rat, she began to fly over to it.

Now, Eve wasn't a great hunter - she preferred to wait for others to leave scraps of carrion behind and eat that instead; but even that couldn't excuse the events that then transpired. As the rat saw the small crow flying over, it quickly scuttled into a nearby hole in the wall.

Unfortunately for Eve, she didn't see that coming. As the crow dived for the rodent, there came a loud thump followed by a pained screech, the crow lying amongst her own fallen feathers with her wings sprawled. She didn't look like she was planning to get up any time soon.

"Fruit is juicy. Plants grow them. They are tasty." He paused, and with great effort, found a way to describe them. "Grow up high. Bright colorful spheres. Pinks, reds, oranges. Eridanus is green... Full of plants. Full of fruits." Although Tal'at couldn't see, he had seen fruits once. Through a precious moment with a close friend. He wondered... Dark could show him what the No Heartbeats looked like.

He heard Eve go off hunting and, with a crash and scrambling talons and feathers, fail miserably. He tilted his head towards her and clicked, chirping with concern.

"Are you okay?" He didn't feel comfortable or safe leaving Dragon's head. He was fond of being a hat much like Eve was, so for the moment he stayed put.

Dragon stared with alarm at Eve as she smashed into the cave wall.

"Is her heart still beating?" he asked at once, immediately remember Tal'at's apparent ability to hear heartbeats.

He dragged himself quickly over, tilting his head to one side and trying to scoop Eve up in his jaws. Then he realized that--beyond this, beyong sticking her in his teeth to keep her safe--he had absolutely no idea what to do, No way to help.

And now, he realized, he also couldn't speak. He wasn't frantic, not exactly, but he was quite concerned. They were alone in a dry, rocky tunnel, with nobody who know (as far as he knew, anyway) how to handle injury, and no water or food to help Eve recover. Should he carry her to Eridanus? Or just keep here here?

"Wuth thoul' I 'oo?"
