tempted the devil with my song
and got what i wanted all along
What was pointless, truly pointless in life were these feathery things attached to me that seemed to have some purpose but didn't. i flapped them angrily, expelling soft chirping noises as i wobbled through the strange structures here in this part of the cave. azurite lenses then darted upward, inspecting every section of the area i was in before meandering my way forth once again. i hadn't a clue as to where i was going or where i was, i was just walking. newly born, i was unsure of anything. creamed feathers and softened fibers almost matched the stone about, but i was still visible. baby talons clacked against the rock flooring as i hobbled along. surely i wasn't meant to just walk. these limbs beneath me didn't seem made for walking, they seemed...strange. maybe everyone was like this? i wasn't sure. i kept quiet, though, unsure and uncertain about the surroundings and what or who may pop out around the corner. my flightless wings wriggled again, flapping about without much to show for it. little feathers came flying about, landing around my taloned limbs. even still, i kept as quiet as possible, but in my childish state i was rather noisy. anything and everything i did seemed to come back to me in incessant echoes. how annoying.

She had come back to Canis as she did every once in a while. It was a morbid curiosity that drove her here, as there was always something interesting going on here that inevitably drove her back - she always followed whatever piqued her interest - but it was hollow and dark here, silent as the grave and just as disturbing for being a grave for many. She both hated and loved coming here, being so out of place, but she always came back.

As she rounded a corner, something caught her ear. Soft flapping and muttering directed her towards a winged thing much like her friend Aza, but very different! It was more majestic, even if it held the same level of clumsiness that so endeared Aza to her, but that was easily explained away by how long the new thing looked. She must have just missed its hatching. Its pretty gem matched its pretty eyes, and she instantly liked it very much.

"Hello, pretty one." She said softly, bowing politely. "Did you just wake up?"

"This is how I speak."

The voice and approach of the much larger creature was something i wanted to be frightened of, but as the sweet voice of contralto lyrics sung to me i realized i had nothing to fear. however, expression offered naught. peculiar lenses inspected her face as she so gestured toward me. what was the gesture, and what was wrong with her eye? i watched her intently, chirping softly every once in a while as bottom beak clicked against the top. then she asked me if i'd just woken up. i pondered a moment, what on earth did she mean? she also called me pretty. chest cavity bloated as my eyes closed, beak elevating and veering to the side.

"i..think so."

though very uncertain in my words and my answer, i was ever prideful. at least, that's what it was, right? waking up? it hadn't been long. after a moment i looked back at the peculiar creature with an outstretched neck.

"what's that?"

i asked, pin pointing what i meant by looking directly at her rather interesting eye.

"Hm? Oh, my eye?" She tilted her head and smiled. "It's my gem, pretty one. You have one too, right here on your head." She leaned down and touched it lightly with her nose, her breath on the bird's face. "It's a beautiful blue like your eyes, and I am quite enamored of it, to be sure."

"As to why my gem is here, I have no idea. I cannot see out of it, but it helps me when its dark, so I love it all the same." She moved her head so the bird could see it easier. "It is rather neat, isn't it?"

"I wonder what I can call you, pretty one. Names are hard to come by, but nicknames are not. What would you like to be called?"

"This is how I speak."

She was kind enough to show me her eye, and as she lowered her head to show me it i looked at it with sheer puzzlement. she tapped my head, hitting something i hadn't a clue was even there. i attempted to look at my own..gem. but it was futile. huffing slightly, i looked back up at the creature as she spoke, informing me.

"why do we have gems?"

i asked with the cock of my head, then registered the question of my name. my name? what would she call me. i paused, every fiber freezing as i pondered this. name? hm. something began to form within my mind, projecting inwardly as a bunch of letters coming together to form something that read 'ambrus'. sure, let's go with that.

"ambrus, i think that's my name."

i said with a twang of uncertainty. but it seemed right. i wondered if she had a name, and what i could call her?

"what can i call you?"

small chirps inquired.

She listened intently, patiently, and smiled when it found its name. Ambrus was a delightfully majestic name, and she was sure it would keep it as its Name. She felt a familiar twinge of jealousy, rather used to it by now. Oh, if only her own name came as easily! She was older than most gems she saw these days, and she had the impression she was one of the first to wake up but she still couldn't find her name.

"Well, Ambrus, we have gems so that we can use magic!" She said in an indulgent voice often used for the young, full of wonder. "I can make myself glow, but others can manipulate the wind and the earth, and heal."

She tried calling to her magic to help demonstrate....

.....but it refused to cooperate. Huh! She must've been feeling too confident. It often worked best when she was desperate.

"...And sometimes, your magic can fail. Sometimes, disastrously."

The Ambrus asked for her name, or what she could be called, and she smiled sadly. "I don't know mine yet. I'm still trying to find it. But you have a wonderful name, you should be proud of it."

"This is how I speak."

Didn't know her name? Why had it formed for me, and not this dear one? I was fortunate, grateful, but maybe I could help her.

"I can help!"

Baby chirps exclaimed with the ruffle of my wings and feathers. I wanted to help her learn her name, or at least what she wouldn't mind being called. But then she seemed to try to demonstrate something and I wasn't sure what to expect. She offered an explanation, informing me that it didn't always work. I should try it, maybe I could do something..this magic, she calls it. I braced myself, looked around a moment, and forced pressure within me.

After long moments of silence and no results, I sighed and huffed almost simultaneously, producing a rather strange noise of anger. Grimacing, brows furrowing, I looked back up at the no named creature, the grimace forming into a frown.

"I tried something..but nothing."

The words spilled in sheer melancholy with an underlying tone of animosity. I guess it was true, it's not guaranteed for the magic to work. Still, I was rather enthralled with the idea that I even had magic in the first place. Elements beyond my comprehension were at work here, let the adventure begin.

"Oh?" She murmured in surprise. "Help me...find my name? How so, dear Ambrus? Do you have something in mind?"

She watched as the new bird tried casting its magic, and saw little flickers of static around its feet, but for the most part it simply fizzled out. She leaned towards the Ambrus and nuzzled its feathers. "It's okay to fail sometimes, sweet. Creatures much older fail their magic half of the time, and it doesn't stop them from trying. You will grow up to be strong, I promise. You just have to try."

She called up the magic in her to try again herself.

It was rather difficult to bring the light from inside to her outside, and she struggled visibly. Maybe it was her tumulting emotions at play, maybe it was her confidence, maybe it was the pressure of performing her magic for another, but it made it more difficult than it was before. Nevertheless, she pushed past it all and managed to glow with a ethereal light.

"See?"

"This is how I speak."

I thought long and hard about how to help her with her name. i was utterly disappointed because i really had absolutely no idea. it took me several moments but as i pondered this she then displayed to me her glow. i watched in sheer delight, beak breaking open and smiling a bit as she demonstrated her magic. wow, that was pretty cool.

"wow! can i glow too?"

i asked but without much further hesitation, i tried to summon my own magic - uncertain if there were different magics or if we all had the same magic. it was clear our gems were different, for mine was blue and her's was an orange-y yellow-y color. but now, as i concentrated, i was able to feel small shocks that felt like intense vibrations radiate inside and outside of me, but the magic was short lived and i was so elated with myself, creamed feathers ruffled in jubilation.

"i did it! did you see? did you feel? HAH!"

i exclaimed, but then my excitement died down as i realized there was another matter at hand, her name. still with a grin, i continued,

"i'm not sure how i can help you with your name, but maybe together we can figure it out."

i offered with hopeful spirits.

Her heart lurched in her chest when the Ambrus displayed its same aptitude for the hurtful light magic, the same as Pounce. That same fear when Pounce discovered it break things, shatter things ran through her like...well, like a shock. She let the moment pass and brought herself under control. Ambrus was so happy, so she would be happy too!

She smiled and said,
"Congratulations, Ambrus! Yes, I did, it was most magnificent. Just like you! Let me see if I can find a gift for you, to celebrate."

As she pawed around, breathing carefully to calm herself down, she looked around the bone room for something interesting to give to the powerful bird. She knew Ambrus would grow into its power very easily, just like Pounce.

As she spotted a pretty clear stone, it called out that it wanted to help with her name, and she turned, eyes wide. It wanted to help her find something so necessary to her, like air, like leafy greens, and that meant more than she could put into words. She was breathless, taken aback. "I....I would like that, I think, dear Ambrus."

She closed her eyes, putting her feelings into the spell that would make a clear, glittering, glowing gift. She really wanted it to succeed this time.

....And she did, breathing her magic into the stone, watching it through a half-lidded eye as if slowly pulsed with a soft inner glow, quietly growing stronger, like it was like a little star. She smiled wistfully, thinking of her first story, and how that star had felt, so sweet and trusting. She leaned down and picked it up between her teeth, and gave it to the little Ambrus, setting it at its claws. Would this be a suitable gift for what she had been given already? She could only hope so.

"You would like meeting Pounce, I think. Pounce is small, and has just woken up, but has the same magic as you do. Perhaps together we can go and find my name."

"This is how I speak."
