Tap tap. Tap tap.

Despite the constant downpour of noise from the surrounding waterfalls, you can hear it.

Tap tap. Tap tap.

Reflected in the surrounding pools, a deep blue chrysalis sits perched on the rocks. Twitching movement flashes inside, as what's inside decides that it's time to break free. Tap tap. Tap tap tap.

Then there's a cracking sound, as splinters of kyanite split a part. Out comes tumbling a baby seal, her grey fur getting wet as she rolls down into a puddle with a splash. A bout of flailing ensues, as she rights herself and shakes the water out of her nose.

Looking up at the clear silver lights with her one eye, she tilts her head. "Huh."

Something had decidedly gone wrong over the past cycles, that much was certain to Fahl. It'd first not occurred to him, the warmer weather a pleasant change for Pisces, reprieve from having to constantly maintain heating spell casts so limbs didn't stiffen from the numbing cold welcome due to the effort and energy it saved. But every visit to the cave as the temperature had gradually risen brought worsening conditions; primarily his way of life here grew more difficult to keep rolling along the same routine, fishing prospects more difficult than they'd ever been before.

The trouble was while he had no issues or discomfort with the lessened chill, the finned denizens of the waterfall cave were far less thrilled by the difference. In fact, it repulsed them so much they preferred spending time hidden in the deepest, darkest crannies of submerged rock over swimming visible and gleaming on the surface of the many ponds scattered about the area. No doubt the cool shade appealed to them more now than bothering to be seen with slick scales dazzling in the light. Unfortunately this meant he spent more time holding his breath and trying to startle any potential morsels out from their lairs when ordinarily the meal would've already been chased and handily caught by his truly.

To hunt required some measure of patience, an aspect of the task long accepted as necessary despite how annoying it was to cultivate, but the current modification to procedure took that too far. It tested the strength of his lungs, how long they would last before the lack of air burned them. Despite proving their durability both instances he'd braved the Black City, Fahl lacked enjoyment in doing so on a frequent basis, a fact readable in his bearing every time he found himself in the midst of what'd once been a more entertaining pastime.

Discontent could be witnessed at this very moment as he clambered out of the latest in a series of ponds swam into, his shoulders tensed and steps more aptly described as stomps before pausing to shake off the numerous droplets collected upon his crimson hide. Gaze dragged downward to listlessly sweep the slippery cave floor, signs of someone else didn't immediately elicit attention—the previous cracking of an opening chrysalis, what would've made the other's presence unmistakable, had been too distorted by underwater activities to be recognized for what it was.

The sound of a splash jerked Fahl's head up to see the unfamiliar, rotund creature. His scales became less uniform in hue: splotchy patterns of white and yellow, orange and red, green and blue played across them before settling upon mottled black and violet.

"Huh?" he echoed, more confused than her exhale had been.

The caves hosted all manner of shapes. Whether there was any reason to which emerged where, he had no clue. According to limited experience, Pisces seemed to spawn reptiles and hoofed animals, but this child—as the suddenly noticed shards of gemstone nearby indicated her age—was neither. If anything, she resembled someone he hadn't encountered in quite a while, similarly flippered but all blubber and no fluff.

"Hello?" Unlike the last time he'd encountered someone younger than himself in Pisces, he found no reason to be scared or defensive, long grown out of the childish concerns that'd brought on those emotions. Instead he tilted his own head in return, curious of whom he'd stumbled upon. "Can you... speak?"

Fault of his stone, he'd struggled a fair amount to start with despite the ease the knowledge of language had come to him. For a good deal of his youth, mumbled or shouted broken sentences had been the best he was capable of. But maybe she'd fare better.

Worse in other ways, he mused, eyeing up the blue spikes protruding from one socket.

@Lorelei
At the sound of Fahl's voice, Lorelei turns her head, searching for whoever spoke. It takes her a moment for her eye to fall on him, and when it does, she tilts her head.

What is that?

She's quiet initially, but before long, "Speak?" she parrots, first just mimicking the noise, but after she says it it all seems to click. "Yes, speak! I can speak!" Her infectious enthusiasm becomes apparent as she wobbled a bit closer, splashing amongst the water and haphazardly scattered gem shards.

"Words are fun," she decides to herself, as she watches Fahl expectantly.

@Fahl

Although Fahl would be unwilling to admit it, the small while it took for the other Gembound to locate him could possibly in part be blamed on him; uncomfortable side shuffles had tried to put the iguana more easily in line of her single eye's sweep over slick rock and water features galore but might have done the exact opposite, shifting him just out of sight whenever her gaze passed by. When at last her focus seemed to have fallen in the right direction, his feet froze in place. He waited, silent, for any sign of understanding. For any sort of response.

One not immediately forthcoming, he started to clear his throat, an awkward attempt to break the tension building there—and stopped at the first of a string of words.

Speak? Indeed, she could. Simple sentences, yes, but more than he'd started with for certain. It seemed he remained the one who'd begun at the bottom-most rung in regard to converting thought to comprehensible sound. All others took to it far faster than him, their stilted speech fluid compared to the garbled fragments younger him had once spouted.

Scarlet pinpricks scattered across scales. On a hard swallow, the violet blotches encircling his throat reddened the slightest in betrayal of how well he received reminders of his talking difficulties. Several potential responses struggled to be voiced. None, no matter how friendly, were absent of bitterness.

"They're most fun when they're useful," was what he eventually settled upon, voice tight despite attempts to sound more casual. "Magic, though... is never not fun."

Swinging back around to the pond he'd emerged from, Fahl sucked in a deep breath and hovered claws over the water's edge. Once he exhaled, steam hissed and rose to graze its stinging touch against his swiftly withdrawing paw. Pride somewhat patched back together, the glance cast back at the young leopard seal allowed a glimpse of the smugness glinting within dark eyes. When he spoke again, his monotone was lessened by the sheer force of a more upbeat attitude.

"Both take practice. So let's try useful words, yeah? Like... names." Which she probably wouldn't know about yet, being moments ago hatched. "They're what you call yourself. For, uh, example... I'm Fahl."

A simple name for a simple tongue.

"And you are?"

@Lorelei
Fahl's pauses didn't bother Lorelei. She waited, bouncing her head around happily to pass the time. His pulsing splotches of color were also fun, she decided, watching his resentment flourish across his scales without the slightest idea what they mean.

"Useful..." she mimics again, the meaning slowly unraveling itself to her as she thinks on it. She tilts head though, as he moves on to the subject of magic. Lorelei watches with baited breath as Fahl makes the surface of the pond flash to steam. Her eye sparkles with interest and enthusiasm. "Woah... I want to try!"

She does pick up on his pride - magic must be very important to him.

Lorelei's excitement is paused by him continuing. "Fahl," she echos, before the question is posed towards her. A name... she thinks. What is a name? Having tumbled just out of a rocky birthplace moments ago she's never had to to think on something like this. It takes her a good while until she starts to try, "L-... Lo-Lo... Lorelei. Yes, yes, Lorelei."

@Fahl

While the younger Gembound dwelled upon his question, the drum of claws upon stone filled the time taken for her answer. A preoccupation for Fahl as he watched, whatever impatience grew within him was held at bay by it, the rhythm routine enough to keep his focus when no other sound was available to do so. This didn't prevent shoulders from sagging in the warmth of the more temperate than usual cave or his back from slumping as well, bored from inaction and the span of quiet. Once she spoke again, he scrambled to a more upright position and soon found himself scowling as best a reptile could in the face of a new name's pronunciation and a tongue too inflexible to nail its sound on the first try.

"Lor... Lo... Lorelei," he said at last. Unsatisfied by how it emerged from his mouth, a grimace twisted facial features. "Well, uh... Lorelei"—the pained expression toppled to mischief at her eagerness for magic—"I don't know about trying that, but you could try something."

"What I just did was fire magic. Advanced," declared the iguana with a prideful puff of his chest, "and definitely not for beginners. Especially if fire's not your magic." Besides, even if she could wield flames, lacking cycles of experience would prevent the small feat he'd accomplished. For now, though, he reveled in stating the exclusivity of using what came naturally. "You could get hurt if you tried. Burned. So you've got to start small. Figure out how to feel it and then use a tiny bit once you can."

"When I first used magic, it was because I needed or wanted something: warmth when I was cold. If you could think of something like that and ask... or demand it to happen... then you might be able to know what it feels like."

The most basic of spells he could ever execute, the command for heat required little more than a brief thought to tap into his well of power. Afterward, all he had to do was guide the surge of energy down to a single paw so that only it was exposed to a sudden leap in temperature. The cast strong and steady, air shimmered around toes, and Fahl waved them in Lorelei's direction to better show the change off.

"Like this. Should be easy."

@Lorelei
Even with how obvious Fahl's displeasure and impatience are across his face and his scales, Lorelei doesn't seem to care or notice. "Yes, Lorelei! That's me!" she responds, before her grin widens as he continues on about magic.

"Start small. Start at home. I can do that," she agrees, nodding her head. "Make a wish? Cooler maybe?" she asks as well, but she doesn't wait for an answer. After his second demonstration (which received a couple ooos and ahhhs), she decides she's ready.

She lowers her head, thinking, wanting, Cooler.

The mist caught on her snout crystalizes into tiny ice crystals, where they persist for a few moments before melting away again.

@Fahl

Despite the brief bit of instruction he'd provided her, Fahl's attention did not remain entirely upon Lorelei. Basking in the sense of accomplishment that came from others' admiration of even the tiniest of magical feats, his attention had been split; while watch was maintained of the child, the heat fading from his toes remained firmly in his periphery, its telltale ripple smoothing out of existence. Therefore what should have been more obvious to him instead was plagued by doubt.

His eyes had caught a glisten upon her snout, momentary as it had been. Unfocused, he couldn't be certain of what exactly he'd witnessed, though it could be inferred from the comments she'd made: frost, perhaps?

"Cooler," he parroted, a squint leveled at the seal. "Well... are you any cooler? Try again if you're not. Or if you think you can be even more. Sometimes you have to do it over and over to have any real effect."

Tedious, yes, but it would work. And if somehow impossibly it didn't, nothing was wrong with a little more practice.

@Lorelei
I can do this, she thinks to herself, not sure if the ice on her snout was real, but hoping it was. Fahl's split attention isn't something that gains her notice, but his advice to try again does. The word forms inside her head, and she tries, "Pr... practice?" She looks to him for some sort of encouragement.

It's brief, though, before Lorelei turns back down to the water, and glares at it as hard as she could. Cooler. she yet again wills.

...The water still sloshes against her indignantly, not any cooler at all.

@Fahl

Fahl said nothing in response to Lorelei's tentative fumbling for a fitting word to his advice. However, he gave a smooth dip of his head towards her an instant before her attention turned from him, a sign of approval.

This bled into faint amusement which puffed from his nostrils as the seal then seemed to engage in a staring contest with the water itself. Age might've worn away the edges of the image brought to the forefront of his mind at the sight, but enough detail remained for a comparison to be made: her demanding a puddle to obey through sheer force of her eyes boring holes into it, him so many cycles ago using a similar stare to bend fish to his will.

At least Imp had shown him how to actually get food. If he hadn't, the iguana suspected his own stubborn stupidity would have starved him at the time.

Once it became clear Lorelei didn't appear to be making any more headway in her power struggle than he had with his, stepping in to help and end any possible embarrassment was the obvious action to take. He strode forward to bridge the distance between them. After settling down beside her, a paw extended to try and introduce further warmth to the water—nothing took, an annoyance reflected by the return of the scarlet pinpricks that'd only just a while before faded from his hide amidst his lecture on magic.

He forged on anyway. "I could warm it up if you want. Give you something to really cool down so you can notice the difference better."
