While Kaizer himself managed to avoid the veritable torrent of teeth, the others are not so lucky. The thundering of sand shifting and wyrms breeching echoes in his ears. He has to act now, if he wants to help anyone.

Before the sand obscures his view, he catches a flash of purple legs and frills, the ground beneath the Valkhound giving way to fangs and death.

"NO!" it bleats, unlikely to be heard above the cacophony. But his magic still gathers and discharges, blasting into the sandworm. It doesn't break its hide or otherwise damage it, but the energy manages to knock it off course enough for Wisperia to scramble to safety.

@Wisperia

It probably wasn't wise to run a race with one [or two] broken legs.

Evidently, One wasn't very smart.

He felt the sand shift beneath his feet, a sinking dragging him into a hellish maw ringed with teeth as big as his whole body. His bad hind leg twisted awkwardly beneath him as he tripped, scrabbling frantically in the shifting sand.

He was desperate, so of course he was going to do something ELSE stupid.

He.. had only really done this on rats, before. If you sent a spark of magic towards the heart you could make it.. go out of wack. Speed up or slow down. He had killed rats in this way. Only a couple, and only out of mercy. The particularly cruel experiments, already half-dead.

But if it could kill a catatonic rat, it could surely mildly inconvenience a gigantic sandworm, right?

He wasn't sure what exactly had happened- the worm was still underground, after all. But the shaking, the shifting sand.. slowed down. Enough for him to clamber onto stable, safe ground. He stopped just for a moment- enough to catch his breath and assess himself; [He hurt, like usual.] before continuing onward.

Because like hell he was going to linger in killer-worm-land.

The dunes quaked below Captain with the force of countless approaching sandworms. Before the buffalo could scramble to get back on his feet, a jaw was already erupting from underneath him. Captain cried out a strangled "SHIVER ME TIMBERS!" as teeth closed around a hind leg. The taste of sodium filled his mouth as tears dripped from his eyes from the pain.

Thinking fast, he tried to pull the sand all around them into a storm of glass shards, but before his magic could gather, the sandworm was already dragging him deeper, its yawning maw aiming to devour him whole. "SCURVY-- DOG--"

Time to think fast.

Already, it was clear that the vibrating discs they carried attracted danger. Zhusha guessed that was why the Merchant and Vargas wanted them to distribute them across the sands--so that in the future, the worms would be attracted to the discs. Perhaps then they could mark out a path through the distractions, so that future travelers would have a safe path to walk on.

But right now, before it was done? They, the workers, the trial-goers, would be in greater danger than even a "normal" excursion in Hydra would incur.

Thankfully, people mostly seemed to be working together; those in danger had either saved themselves, or someone else had come to their rescue. There was still one in mortal peril--the buffalo currently being dragged down. "WATCH OUT!" Zhusha honked, scanning the surroundings for anything he could use as a distraction.

There! A large disc, almost too heavy for him to lift--but the larger, the better. Zhusha seized it in his feet and heaved it toward the sandworm attacking Captain, nearly falling out of the sky with the effort it took. Dizzy with the exertion, he didn't get to see the disc actually connecting with the worm--only thought he could pick out the sound of a dull thunk among the chaos.

Hopefully, it would be enough.

The Huntsman felt a particularly smug kind of pride as the sands behind them exploded with panicked screams and churning maws. Those fools didn't run fast enough, so maybe THEY would need to cling to each other to survive this. But not The Huntsman. He was above that.

Quite literally; while he does not fly often, he DOES in fact have wings he was making good use of. Many of those that had made it ahead, he noted, were flying above it all. That made sense, he supposed.

But it'd do him good in the long term to thin out the flock.

His target was a pure white creature of indistinct species, nearly his own size. A good competitor to get rid of- and that incessant whistling accompanying them helped motivate him further.

He would begin to climb higher in the sky, above Hymn. Pausing for a moment, taking aim. And then he would tuck into a dive, aiming directly at one of Hymn's wings. Ideally, he would tear at it with his fangs and talons before curving away and out of reach before Hymn could bring him down with him.

@Hymn
Hymn was busy having a rather jolly time providing some music while everyone else was suffering in the trial. It's quite unclear if he had realized yet the true danger of it all, considering he had found success with his strategy and avoided the sandworms. But then there was Huntsman. When you were at the the front of the race, you also became a target. Even if you were just a silly looking not quite otter thing that likes music.

They had not expected for someone to target them. But that shadow was really getting quite big... he looked above him, having just barely enough time to twist midair and dodge, though several of his feathers were caught in the attack. However, it was not enough to impede his flight. "EXCUSE YOU! I am working VERY hard in providing MUSIC for EVERYONE! That was COMPLETELY UNPROVOKED!" perhaps Hymn had not realized his idea of music was not pleasant to everyone's ears. But still! He had not deserved to be attacked!

@Huntsman
Round Three

Against all odds--they had survived. The hum of the discs drove the Sandworms first into a frenzy--they lashed, they bit, some swallowed, even, the vibrating stones. -And moments later emerged again, thrashing to eject them back across the sands. At last they fled--diving down, far beneath the sands, sinking back into their deep hibernation. There were gaps--spaces the worms would find, or the shifting sands would eventually create--in that coverage. But by and large, the worms were driven deep.

Next: the Crucible. It was an hour or more of trudging trek through brutal heat and undying 'sun' before at last the yawning mouth of the ravines welcomed them. The Masked Merchant's pit-void gaze swept slowly, as though he could see the distant Gembound as they vanished into those canyons. It would be, he knew, a relief, at first: shade at last, the distant trickling of the creeks and river that wound down through here. But those shadowed corners hid deadly hunters: the blue-haired Spire Spiders whose hypnotic dance would entrance their prey for a deadly bite, or the Sand Scorpions that could thrust both tails from a hidden crevice and snag someone with their sting. Or more dangerous yet: the impersonal and treacherous climb to the plateau where the Eyehooks nested, where the Gembound were to ascend and plant their seeds. These paths were unmarked, and narrow, and often gave way underfoot, so that at least one deadly tumble was not only possible but likely.

Ahh--and here came Vargas, dutifully setting out across the sands, but there were yet no real stragglers to finish off. Instead, a cutting gaze would watch--warily--as Ruby-Beta fell behind with the rest. Would that it did not do so further. Killing one of his spawn-... well. It would be unpleasant. But his was a quick mercy that would be granted to those that fell too far behind: those that would not survive.

• Gembounds must roll to safely traverse the Crucible, making it safely to the edges of the plateau above. Any form of roll may be used so long as it makes sense (magic sense to avoid danger, other or physical to avoid or dodge attack, etc.).

• Upon a successful roll (Barely +), please specify in bold text underneath your post/posting table, whether your character chooses to move ahead of those who fail, or remains behind with the pack, or even deliberately falls back one place with the stragglers.

• Failing this roll may result in attack by Spire Spiders, Sand Scorpions or a bad fall off the high, narrow trails.

Ruby-Beta scrambled to its feet as it felt the sand worm wrenched away. The smell of burning flesh was pungeant in its nose, but it barely noticed it beyond its violent trembling. It looked up, wide-eyed, at the eagle-creature pulling the sand worm away, and then the creature disappearing back into the sand. ”Th-thanks,” it gasped, trying to get a grip on its beating heart.

The others were moving on while Beta was still collecting itself. There was a thick gash on its side, dripping blood into the sand and causing every movement to blaze with pain. It grimaced, pushing through it and forward, to try and keep up with the others.

It could smell how thickly the blood hung in the air, and it knew that it was sticking out like a sore thumb in the earthy tones of the desert. Straggling behind and so obviously weakened would make it easy prey, an easy target.

It glanced around at others falling behind and decided that it wasn’t going to be the first one out. It paused for a moment, pawing some sand into a pile before lowering itself into it and taking a quick sand-bath. The blood served as an adhesive as it got all over the sand and its fur (although it snarled with the pain of having bits of grit get into its wound), and when it stood up again, not only was the sand naturally clinging to each strand of its course fur, but the blood helped it clump in places. Plus, this might help dampen the smell of blood, but that was yet to be known.

Taking a quick breath and steeling itself against the burn in its side, Ruby-Beta bounded forward to catch up with the others.
Ruby-Beta is pushing ahead

Glory nodded curtly, watching the remaining worms disappearing deep into the sand. He clacked his beak and let out a very un-bird-like snort. Hopefully that was the last they would see of those monstrosities.

Turning ahead, Glory trotted on with the other Gembound - who had all miraculously gotten out alive - and wondered what other challenges they were going to face. Surely there was even worse to come for Hydra to throw at the group. Already, the bright hot lights beating down were enough for Glory to wish for the waters of Leo to cool off. Still, it was nothing compared to the heat of his forge. It was just the lack of water that would be dangerous.

The shade was welcome, but Glory stayed cautious. There could be danger anywhere and everywhere here. He could feel it like static in his feathers, so he opened his wings and called the stagnant winds to move, billowing beneath him and pushing him into the air with little effort from himself. He soared above the group, hopefully avoiding the danger from the cracks and crevices bellow, but not too high that he attracted anything from above.

Meanwhile, his eyes scoured the group, watching for any signs of danger or any sign that someone was in distress. He held the magic strong, keeping him aloft while conserving his physical energy, ready to change direction at a moment’s noticed.

Glory is staying with the group

The sand erupted around him with the gnashing maws of the worms, and he reared with an embarrassingly animalistic squeal. Instinct took him and he bolted, mirror of a million fleeing horses across history, before his mind managed to drive sense back into him. Then he wheeled, wild-eyed and flared-nostriled, to look for those who might need help.

They were doing, though, well enough without him. He dropped back, trying to keep an eye on those who had been wounded, who had fallen behind. "You can still do this," he offered as friendly encouragement. "I'll try to find a safe route."

Golden wings unfurled from his shoulders, spreading out in a graceful arc--glimmering, ethereal armor coalescing along neck, flanks and legs. He took off, a brief gallop into the blessed shade transitioning into a gleaming soar. Warrior was, as he scouted the rising trails (and sought, by eye at least, for danger) a blur of gold and silver.

At length he returned to the others--those who had fallen behind--and landed with a soft hoof-thud. "I think it is safest this way. I don't see any spiders, at least," he offered, with a dip of his head and a gentle whinny.

Warrior is staying with last place (whichever that may turn out to be!)
