ORIGIN - Practice makes... pain, apparently

"Well... my magic lets me find living things, when it works. I can hear the heartbeats of living beings in the area," Mirrikh offered.

"It's more useful for hunting than anything else, though. Like finding prey initially. After that happens, I can use my toxins!"

They showed off the way their bottom paws had retractable claws, and then opened their mouth for a moment to show off their teeth as well.

"My bottom claws and teeth can cause some Stonerot! It's like... calcifying tissue or something? Makes it kind of like stone, but I can eat that thanks to my teeth. According to my father, the lesser gembound my stone is from was a snake that was quite dangerous, but he killed it using his paralysis toxin to help. I have paralysis toxin too, a contact powder that forms on my wings, I can shake it off, and all that," Mirrikh explained proudly.

They concentrated on their magic, and sensed a few nearby heartbeats. "There's some small and fast heartbeats nearby, I think they're mice. That direction. Do you want to see who can catch the most?" Mirrikh asked, excitement visible at their own question.

Anala watched the show in awe, marvelling over Mirrikh's many battle-ready traits. She had once thought big-tooth was a danger, but now she wondered how he would have held up against the gator, even given the size difference. Smaller did mean harder to hit, given that they could eat STONE... Well, Anala was glad they were sparring.
One day... One day she would be the danger!
"Oh I love a challenge! You're on! But no funny business!" She grinned, tail wagging increasing like the revving of an engine as she stood, ready to bolt.
"On your mark!"
Anala was usually more than happy to track creatures with her nose, but considering its condition for the time being, she was rather excited to see another's way of doing so.

"Three... Two... One... GO!" the tiny fairy proclaimed with a grin, flitting off towards where they had sensed the life with speedy flaps of their wings.

It was a nest, and they were eager to catch them. Technically, they could probably catch a great deal simply by shaking theirs wings, full of paralysis powder over the group of mice. But that felt unfair for a competition.

So Mirrikh dove down, kicked small legs sharp with stonerot venom covered claws at one of the mice. It was a success, but the current mouse was not yet finished, for all it was limping as one its legs calcified rapidly, squeaking in fear.

The other mice realized there was a predator in their midst and scattered. An even greater challenge, but this delighted Mirrikh. They would give chase once they had finished off this mouse.

GO!
The word tore through Anala like wildfire, setting every nerve alight as she bolted after the fairy. Now this was fun; Good, although maybe not old-fashioned, hunting!
She skidded past where Mirrikh stopped intending to cut off the path of a few mice as they darted out of reach of their claws, squeaking away. What fun! Hopefully she'd get a good meal out of this, after using up so much energy and... Oh her paws were sore!
Trying very hard to focus on the game and not the ache, she opened wide and tried to catch at least one mouse in the swarm. She flinched at the last minute as a stone caught under her paw, only landing one mouse by the hind leg. Darn!
Still, she wouldn't let it suffer before she moved on to a new catch. At least she was even in the race, and not behind!

@Mirrikh

The limping mouse was lunged at by Mirrikh, mostly in the air. However, their posture had adjusted to allowed Mirrikh's mouth, full of serrated teeth, to be closer to the mouse. It was their intent to finish it off cleanly.

It was perhaps not as quick and clean as it could have been, but in the end, Mirrikh finished off mouse the first, its neck frozen with the rapid calcification and then broken by their teeth.

But, Mirrikh was still learning hunting a bit, even if it was extremely instinctual for the carnivorous fairy. A slightly messy kill could be excused.

After confirming the kill, they took to the air, gaze searching from above for their next mouse, for the mice should still be near enough to be easy to spot from such a position.

@Anala

With the score becoming 1-0 for the moment, Anala's body was buzzing with excitement. Who knew training could be so fun? It was almost better than a physical spar, considering the luck of the draw when it came to involving lessers!
The mouse she had injured hadn't managed to scurry off too far, but she still had to keep some speed to try and catch the thing given that it kept running under things. She couldn't blame the thing for trying, but she also wasn't going to leave it to suffer when it could instead be dinner.
She ducked her head to catch it, hoping for one good bite to even the score, just as it dived for more cover. Damn!

A quick glance at Anala briefly showed that Mirrikh was currently ahead, at least so far as they were aware, since it looked like the wolf had missed her own mouse.

The desire to compete for the win surged through them, though, and Mirrikh was soon diving down to scratch at another mouse with their legs.

And they just barely avoided faceplanting as the mouse looked up and then fearfully scurried away before Mirrikh could change angles.

A small yet rather feline hiss of frustration left Mirrikh as they adjusted, looking for a different mouse, perhaps.

Though being distracted probably wasn't the best considering this was a competition, Anala couldn't help but check up on Mirrikh's progress. She also couldn't help but burst into a fit of laughter as they nearly missed the cave floor.
"Come on! You were doing so well!" She cheered before attempting to snap at her mouse again. It was another miss, likely due to the giggling fit she still couldn't contain.
"I thought we agreed no cheating! You distracted me!" She teased, deciding to aim for a different mouse.

The wolf laughed at their almost faceplant, and it was a contagious humor. Mirrikh appreciated the cheer distantly, but then couldn't help their own laugh as the other missed due to her giggle fit. "You distracted you," Mirrikh pretended to correct with a false-haughty air.

Their gaze was already searching for the next mouse. When they found one, they went in for another, hopefully more precise dive. Mirrikh missed yet again, but at least they didn't nigh-faceplant.

"I'm still winning even if I missed," Mirrikh teased playfully. "One is more than zero, after all!" Their gaze was scanning the area for the prey which continued to scatter further.

"Ha!" Anala laughed again as Mirrikh missed another, glad she wasn't the only one distracted. This was fun! It would be more fun if she was winning, though, and so she sniffed her way after another mouse.
"They're starting to spread so far now!" She huffed, trying for yet another good bite. Come on! At least let them tie!
Her prayers were answered, mostly, when her teeth once more made contact with flesh. "Damn it! Stop running!" She found herself giggling again rather than frustrated as she once again only injured the mouse she was targeting. She hoped she'd actually kill this one, though. It was no fair to leave them to suffer.
