Diem Dark tumbled ungracefully out of the Mysterious Rift and into Origin Cave. Heels over head, wooden box falling, belongings scattering-... She swore, loudly, pushing up and looking sharply around.
Halfway there she paused, her cartilaginous flesh face--currently in the shape of a vulture's skull--staring around in awe. She had half-knelt, hand outstretched, for a pile of papers but now she looked around her.
She looked down at herself as she did so.
Diem spent a long moment flipping the cloak's hood up and down, grinning.
Well, everything seemed intact. Good start. Now for exploration, and meeting new--
Diem crouched, squinting and concentrating.
A long moment later, nothing had happened.
A failure at magic was a prime opportunity to put her main gift from the other side to the test. Out came the wooden box, and out of that came the little twenty-sided die. She'd liked the idea of another one--one the Collector had given away in ages past. This one was a recolor of that one, but it bore the same magic. She called it 'the Recolored D20,' an amazing failing on her part in terms of creativity but to hell with it.
The important thing was that it could be used to tip the scales when something failed, or, if you were a complete idiot, had succeeded. She turned the little die over in her hand, admiring its deep emerald green hue and gold etchings, then knelt and gave it a roll. She felt it flicker, and take, and felt the magic well up--startling, when she hadn't been concentrating on it. It was like the die found it within her and pulled it forth, teasing it from the topaz at her chest.
As the magic began to form a small shape before her, she scrambled to catch up. It'd conjure a familiar--she knew that--but she'd been thinking so hard about the die she'd forgotten to pick a form for it!
Honestly there were lots of things that'd make a cool familiar! Cats, sure. Owls! Or a little t-rex! Oh--a wolf! Or-
The little blue shape fully formed, and it was a very tiny alligator. It looked rather like an adorable baby gator, with big eyes and a natural grin, but it was made of blue light.
'Squeak.'
okay world, here's my winner's choice character! Please feel free to interact!
The weather was clear in this cave, and Yanyue's scales were a pearly white in response. Next to the gemstone spires, Yanyue almost seemed to blend in as another shiny element of this cave. Their ears flicked, searching for the direction of the sounds, and they thought they found it.
But they felt so slow, so Yanyue pushed the air currents to make themself feel faster. It was again, like flying almost.
They tried to stop as they approached the voices, by they ended up tripping and tumbling over themself in the process. The scrawny noodle did not lose their cheer though, sprawled on the ground as they were. "Hi! I'm Yanyue! What's your and your friend's name?"
Yanyue's cheer was infectious, quite literally, as it seeped through pheromones into the surrounding air.
@Diem Dark
Diem jolted, scrambling to ensure she didn't drop the glowing alligator hatchling. Both her skull-face and the alligator's translucent blue (oversized) head jerked to face the incoming dragon. Incoming-... small dragon, comparatively, but still big enough; thankfully she didn't have much time to wonder if it'd be hostile.
Diem froze, staring with wide eyes at the dragon, for about three heartbeats. The alligator chirped.
The second half of the question bumped its way back into her mind, then, and she glanced down at her familiar.
That seemed a good way to make new friends. Cool stuff was always good.
@Yanyue
Then they realized they hadn't yet righted their posture, and they did that, becoming less of a tangle of noodle on the ground. They bounced in place, happy. The question the other asked gave them some pause, having just thought of themself as Yanyue until this point, but the word felt right.
"Yes, I think so! Some sort of dragon, I think!" they agreed.
They tilted their head at the idea of summoning a creature of light. "With your magic? That's so cool! Can anyone do that?" they cheerily inquired.
"Maybe... Squeak?" they suggested. "If it likes that name, that is. Or something sound related. Its sound is pretty unique! ...I think. I haven't really met too many folks yet."
They bounced a bit at the idea of something cool, being a fairly fresh child. "Oh, really?!"
Yanyue eagerly turned to the magic 'portal', as Diem had called it. "Uhm, Magic Portal? Could I have something cool, pretty please?"
Their big eyes were pleading, like a hopeful puppy's.
@Diem Dark
Surreptitiously she glanced down into the die that lay in her hand.
@Yanyue
"It's pretty cool, though! Maybe eventually I'll be able to learn it," Yanyue went with the flow of things, figuring that if anyone could learn it eventually, then Yanyue would just have to be a part of eventually.
"Oh!" Yanyue blinked, distracted easily by magic portal's lack of gift, by something else entirely. "You came from the portal?"
Yanyue pondered this very very briefly, and then gave a decisive nod. "Makes sense! The magic portal gives cool things, and you're pretty cool, Diem!"
"Do you think the magic portal would mind me asking again later?" the little dragon inquired at the suggestion, then was distracted by the question from Diem.
"Sure, of course you can ask! What sort of favor?" Yanyue's head tilted, cheerfully curious and rather friendly.
@Diem Dark
The dragon thought she was cool.
She turned, then, eyeing the portal and considering.
And the wisps of Order mold, but... that she could ignore, for now.
@Yanyue
How long was the high-five supposed to last, exactly? Yanyue wasn't sure, so they just kept their paw there softly for until Diem decided to retract her hand.
Yanyue continued to be bright and cheery, regarding the magical portal with awe. "That's nice of it! I'll be sure to come back often, then! Thank you, Diem!"
"This is my first cycle," Yanyue admitted, but they were not to be deterred from helping. "I do know somewhere cool though, sort of nearby, even! Next cave over! It's called the Workshop, or the forge! Maybe we could go there together? The being there is really nice," they nodded, eyes regarding Diem with metaphorical sparkles.
"The forge isn't a magical portal, or anything like that. But the being there can create stuff! Cool stuff!" Yanyue happily assured Diem.
"Would you like to go there? Maybe I can also help you find another.... guide, after that! Or we could ask cool forge-person, about places to go?"
