The presence of Sprig by their side was a comfort as Cadenza recounted the story of how and why they had once killed a gembound, despite their extremely pacifist nature. He leaned against them and it was grounding for Cadenza.
Cadenza wanted to soothe Alek again as he spoke his fear. But it was important that they let Alek speak his story fully. And they listened.
It was hard for them to understand, at first, in a way. To spare a life was no sin. But to comfort the killer of one’s kin… Was that wrong? It made Cadenza’s heart hurt, made them feel confused and understanding all at once. Alek had always been mischievous, but Cadenza had known their son had a compassionate side to him.
They had not realized the depth of Alek’s compassion until this tale, however, hidden beneath other layers as it was. Compassion was no sin, they decided. No matter who it was directed towards, how could compassion be a sin?
And love was wonderful, they knew. ”Alek, you are so very brave,” Cadenza spoke, musical voice gentle. ”Your friend is right. Your compassion is not a crime, my son. We love you. You have grown up so well,” their voice was tearful, but they were proud even if they were sad too. It was bittersweet.
Cadenza hesitantly regarded Erasmus yet again, a new light to their understanding of them. But Sprig spoke true. Death was not a solution to death. Which brought a fear to their mind, but they did not voice it yet. ”Sprig speaks true, Erasmus. You are resilient and strong as few are. And you are family now.” Their orange gaze flitted between the three. ”All of you are welcome. I hope to meet your children, one day, as well.”
There was one more thing they must say, though. ”…I will have to speak to my dad. My dragon-dad, though deer-dad may know as well… To determine the identity of the Raspite’s origin and name,” Cadenza mentioned, softly. They knew Alek would volunteer to go, perhaps even strong Erasmus, perhaps all three, but… ”I will do this on my own. It is best,” they proclaimed with all the authority they could muster.
It was a resolute tone that Cadenza rarely had, served for protecting their own kin. And these were their kin just as much Alek, from the way Alek spoke of the two.
Only they would speak to Dread. It was for the best. But not yet. After Alek had registered all their words.
