It snarled at the laughter and didn't hesitate this time. The lightning ripped out of its body and lashed into the illusion of the man and his stupid desk. Its whole body was seizing from the strain, but it didn't care, it welcomed the pain. V-Ruby-One roared as it pulled the lightning to spark all over the cave, not just the man, but the white shadows, every crevice of the voidlit cave would be struck by its power.

WHERE IS IT. It is the Creator, the broken thing whispered. He is testing you. Be careful. THEN THE CREATOR WILL TASTE THE FURY OF HIS HOUND! The helion continued to look, snarling against the laughter, head whipping from side to side as it tried to find, tried to see if there was even a source. Muscles tense and burning from its own lightning ready to fall upon whoever showed themselves.
The pieces of the finely-crafted scene blinked out of existence one by one--the man. The desk (and the owl was now set atop... a broad rock, nothing more), the papers. Some of them were hit by black lightning vanishing in a flash.

And then the pool of normal light was gone.

It was only after the storm had stopped that a mild voice spoke from up the tunnel, a little ways: "Hmm. It seems I have to work on the lighting. -That light looked wrong to you, too, right?"

In stepped the Collector, firing a glance at the Altar, and then at Ruby-One. He did not draw further into the room, probably wary of the chaotic magic that had just sizzled the stone all around. "You do know that that is just a rock, yes?"

@V-Ruby-One
Everything quieted for a moment and V-Ruby-One was left with no answer. No voice of the Creator speaking to it, no stupid clerk at his fucking desk asking about "resumes" and repeating himself over and over. Nothing.

THEY HAVE TO BE HERE SOMEWHERE. And so alert it was, looking for the source of the magic that as soon as there was any inkling that someone was approaching from the tunnel, it was whipping around, waiting, ready. It did not know the Collector, it had never heard of him, never seen him, but even if it had it would be no less furious. To the hellion, this was just a stupid gembound trying to mess with it.

It grasped for it with magic, commanding it come closer by any means necessary, but chaos did not respond, and instead, its head lowered, snarling, threatening, a predator poised to strike if it didnt receive its answer. "Who are you? And how DARE you trick me? I will rip your horns right from your head!"
The Collector paused mid-hoofstep, then his crimson pinprick eyes rolled upward, as if to peer through the top of his hood. His hands reached up, briefly feeling over his spiral horns.

"I would prefer it if you didn't," he replied, jovially enough. "Ahh, but you aren't one of the ones with a sense of humor-? My apologies. I am the Collector, at your service," and here, he swept into a low bow. "I saw you trundle on down, and found myself curious. It isn't often you see one of the Valkhounds with such an efficient form. But you are trying to gain an answer from the Altar..?"

He turned, and gestured to it.

@V-Ruby-One
It didn't let the Collector finish his speech. The ground beneath him was suddenly burst open as a oily-black tentacle reached forward to grab around his mid-section and hold him there while V-Ruby-One advanced forward, looming over the cloaked figure.

HE MOCKS US AND THEN CLAIMS TO BE AT OUR SERVICE? LIES! LIAR!! TRICKERY!! DESTROY HIM NOW!!! But hold on - it had heard of the Collector. Giver of missions and cursed trinkets for the gembound to run around and play with. Not important to the Forge, but a well-known figure regardless. Not that it cared who was or wasn't deemed "important" to Vargas's army.

"Shut the fuck up with your attempts at flattery," it snarled, viciously. "I'll ask you one more time, why you would dare to trick me?" Its eyes narrowed. "I sought answers. From the ALTAR. And from the CREATOR. What makes you think you deserve to give those answers in His stead?"
The Collector didn't seem particularly bothered by the tentacle that gripped him, though he reached down and brushed off his robe where it left a slick of Oil.

The other Collector didn't look too bothered, either, when he appeared at the other end of the Hole, behind Ruby-One, speaking matter-of-factly. "A shame, that no one has praised you enough that you find truth to be mere flattery."

That might have been flattery again. Or it might have been honesty--difficult to tell.

"As for the trickery... it was funny." Hands parted, palms-up, as if to say he were helpless in the matter. "But as for that-..." and all three Collectors turned, nodding to the Altar, speaking as one: "If it were going to answer you, it would have. I did not follow you to trick you, but out of curiosity. He does not speak through mere stone. And if you thought he did, you drastically misunderstood the nature of the rock."

The third Collector walked over, rapping knuckles on the Altar.

"If you'd like to trade that gemstone to me in payment, I'll gladly explain it to you. Perhaps I can even help you get the visions you desire." Three hands--one per figure--raised into the air as if to forestall attack. "I will take further attack as a 'no.'"

@V-Ruby-One
It thought it had him, and was advancing forward, but then...there were three? It whipped around, snarling, eyes trying to track each of them, trying to figure out if there was a tell, which one was which, but they were all the same - black robed, horned, with pinprick eyes gleaming from the shadows, inverted in the void-light.

THEN KILL THEM ALL! ONE BY ONE OR ALL TOGETHER! But wait, he called us a valkhound. He said it was truth. Isn't that what we wanted? HE LIES, HE IS A LIAR! WE DON'T LISTEN TO LIARS! But hold on, it was unrealistic to think it could defeat all three. It was powerful, it was an illusionist, it toyed with it as if it were nothing despite the power it displayed. And it is still weak - perhaps they should hear it out. BUT HE WILL NOT TRICK US! The broken thing quietly agreed, but still leaned into the compliment he paid them. Valkhound...efficient form...the truth...

SHUT UP.

It was still agitated on the outside, feverishly whipping its head to keep an eye on each of the Collectors at once, but then quickly gave up, and chose the one standing by the altar. It reached down to snatch up the corpse of the owl again, almost protectively holding it at its side. "No," it snarled. "This was an offering. It is not for YOU. I am not foolish enough to think he spoke THROUGH a rock! This is a place of corruption, its a place of His power!" Its fangs bared and an ugly noise reared from the back of its throat and the beast was screaming again in the back of its mind. LIAR!! WE DO NOT WANT HIS VISIONS!! "I am not INTERESTED in visions unless they come from the CREATOR! Do you speak with His voice?"
The Collector (number seven, now) folded his hands as he regarded V-Ruby-One.

All of them did, in fact. And there was a sudden shift in his body language; it was faint, but sudden enough that it could, maybe, possibly even be genuine.

It was an almost uneasy glance toward the Altar. But not the sort that feared. It was almost... embarrassed, the way the Collector hunched very faintly, as if he didn't want to be the one to tell the Valkhound... something?

"...Oh, dear," Algol breathed, and sev--eight--sets of red eyes flicked back to regard V-Ruby-One. "I fear someone has fundamentally misunderstood the nature of Chaos." Claws drummed against his own arm for a beat, and he studied V-Ruby-One thoughtfully. "I owe you one. You helped to retake my home, Canis--purging that detestable, malodorous..." (claws made an annoyed flick-it-away gesture) "Hive."

One of the Collectors faded out.

"Let it never be said that I do not pay my debts fairly. In return, a tidbit of knowledge: that," and a claw gestured to the Black Altar, "is not a conduit. Not exactly. It is a source of Chaos; what you see in it is... Chaos. The nature of it. It isn't visions, not exactly. Certainly not from Him."

Another Collector blinked from existence; the Hole was back to five Collectors. One of them brushed at the tentacle around his waist again.

"He has visited here once since the Awakening, that I know of. You would know if he touched you truly. See the proof of this in the Palace, some time--at the theatre. But otherwise it is simply dreams. Yes--I was joking, with the resume. -Mostly. But such things, your meditations--they can help to shape what you see. If you wished to see what roles you might take... Well. I will not set the desk back up. But-... Ahh, I suppose that is payment rendered. If you wish to change your mind on the 'trade a stone for aid in channeling a vision,' I suppose I will be in Canis, in part thanks to you."

All three Collectors bowed as one.

Panic Attack

It was hesitant to believe anything he said. Extremely hesitant. But there was so much it didn't understand anymore. So much that it could barely separate from dreams, nightmares, visions, and reality. And this Collector was further driving a nail in deeper, wedging into the cracks of its psyche with his LIES Truths words. Vision flickered for a moment. The face of the Creator was in its sight. A roaring in its ears.

It turned to stare at the Altar, a hand coming up to grip at its head as it hung onto reality. The beast was screaming in the back of its head, promising death, promising destruction for this heretic. But the broken thing was louder, right now. Somehow. Begging it. Think about it. Just think. We presented an offering and it gave us no reward. There was no voice of the Creator. He did not hear us. Not like he did...there. Its bodyless head was gripped in the claws of its god, tightly holding into the scythe-gemstone. Its black blood stained the floor as it was slammed, over and over and over again.

Think about it. Listen. The Creator is not here. It has never been. If we want to hear Him, we go back to the Spire and do that again. It was dying it was bleeding out, it could barely think, it could no longer breath, but still it was forced to see Him, hear him, feel him in what remained of its bones. It did not notice that it had sunk to the ground before the alter, one hand gripping its head, another two gripped the alter, the fourth gripped its heart as its breathing became clipped and heavy and short. It was dying it was dying it was dying "SHUT UP," it suddenly roared. It wasn't clear if it was directed at the Collector or someone in its head.

YOU SHUT UP. GET UP AND FIGHT. COWERING, WHIMPERING, PATHETIC THING!! It grit its teeth against the continued shouting of the beast and all at once it was like something snapped into place and it was jerking back to its feet and whipping around towards one of the Collectors. Like a thread snap at the end of its patience or ability to take this shit anymore, in a sudden, jerking, manic move, it gripped the owl and threw it right at the Collector. "Fine. FINE!! I will trade." He has said enough - about the altar, about the incident in the Palace it certainly knew about, and the dreams. Helion knew that it hadn't seen the Creator that day. He did not appear from the Spire like that. It knew it had seen dreams. Only dreams.

It wanted...more. It wanted to know Him. See Him. Because this could not all be His will.

Its teeth grit and it stepped forward, hands leaving its own body to grip at its side as the panic faded, replaced with that burning anger that seemed to be its lifeblood, its fuel, the constant state of its being. "You can have it, if you can give me what I desire - a real vision. His voice, His will. SOMETHING from HIM."
The Collector stared, for a moment, from three faces.

Helion's dead owl was chucked, and sailed through one, which dispersed like smoke; the other two sighed as one.

The dead owl then thunked off the floor, with a little squish to accompany it. Both remaining Collectors glanced at it.

He shook his head as he looked to Helion. "You misunderstand me. There is no Creator here." He stared for a long moment, as if trying to impress the truth of his statement. "I can offer a vision. I cannot offer his. ...This is a rock, Valkhound." One hand gestured to the Altar, and the last Collector--tentacle around his waist--shrugged.
