Disregard all that it took to get just to this area. The Catawampus is here now.
It stands within the cathedral on the cave-side of the portal, staring out at the interdimensional gateway that surely leads to the cathedral's reciprocal. It does not move through.
At times, it seems like it occasionally might. Like the thought crosses its mind. The evidence of this is seen in a twitch, a false-forward motion, and then a violent shudder. Repulsion. It steps away.
For the longest time, the Catawampus has lacked much higher thought. It bullies the imps at the Carnival for free food and toys. It chases prey animals in the fields of Pegasus. It doesn't ever get the chance to speak much. It is a simple creature; as simple as we have evidence to believe.
In this moment, it finally seems to be pondering something higher. The 'higher'. Surely it has heard? That great, looming, alien expanse, stretching out overhead. The sky.
Blessed as it was with great functional wings, the nature bestowed upon it by the source of those wings was still that of a bat. Stay inside. Stay safe, in the dark. Only when the night falls will you take your maiden flight. Your true flight, in the limitless sky.
It stood, just a simple beast, at the proverbial (and almost literal) mouth of this cave. It knew, in its bones and all its instincts, that its current isolation would crush it, weigh it down to the earth. It could not go out just yet. Not alone. Not in the light of day.
But who would be there for it? And when would night fall? It is pure speculation, but perhaps it is not ours to speculate. Perhaps it is for only the Catawampus to know.
With renewed resolve, the Catawampus turns away from the portal, and exits the Cathedral. It is not its time.
Yet.
