She sniffed around as she wandered through the area, ears pushed forward and eyes scanning the area above her. She was looking for something, a group of bugs called dust moths, at least that's what she remembered being told about. She didn't really understand why they were sought after, but hey, who was she to question it. So, hiding a bit of a toothy smile, trying to hide her excitement, she continued to search. Sure enough, she found them, a group of them, flying above, though not high enough where she would have to jump. At least not yet.
She took a deep breath and picked up a rock, charging it before quickly tossing it upwards with her mouth, watching as a shock of lightning reached out and hit one of them, making it fall to the ground. Perfect! Was this the most thought out way of doing it? No, but she didn't want to spook them by jumping up into their group, so she figured a rock or another small object would be the best course of action.
Well, it had worked well so far. So why not keep trying. It wasn't too hard to find another small rock, big enough to once again charge up and throw at the flying creatures. She knew this wouldn't work on anything normal size, but these things were small and very weak, so thankfully such a shock sent them out of the sky within seconds.
Sure enough, as the rock passed by the hoard, it zapped one and it landed on the ground, right next to the first one that she had gotten. There we go! That was two. She had.... She groaned slightly. five more left. Well, time to stockpile rocks.
Okay, she could do this, it wasn't that much... well it was, but hopefully she didn't overuse her magic and hurt herself. She was already starting to feel a bit of the effects, but thankfully it was less than when she used to use it before. That's where training got ya.
She picked up another rock and, similar to all the time before, charged it and chucked it. It soared through the air, almost hitting one of the moths but the zap took it out anyway, making it land directly beside the growing pile under it. Three. Nice.
For a moment the flock of them dispersed and she sat down, waiting and watching for them to regather again.
She was starting to get a bit tired, but she pushed through, picking out another rock so that she could infuse it again. However this time, it didn't seem to work and she furrowed her brows, not feeling the usual electric current going through the rock.
Weird.
She lowered her head and sniffed at it for a moment, cocking her head to the side. Was this rock defective? No, maybe she just messed up? This was one of the very few times her magic actually failed her, so she wasn't used to it.
She shrugged it off and, using the same rock, once again tried to infuse it. Sure enough, it worked and she smiled to herself. Good. At least it had given the moths a chance to relax and regroup, making it easier for her to throw her magic rocks through them and hit at least one.
Picking it up in her mouth, she yeeted it upwards once more before it could shock her instead, watching as yet another moth dropped to the ground.
She only needed three more, she could do this. She was making good progress, and it only helped to embolden her and make her feel like her magic was getting better, stronger.
She searched for another rock, taking a moment before she found a good sized one. One too small wouldn't work very well, but that was okay, she ended up finding another of a decent size.
And so, pushing her magic into it, she tossed it at the now dwindling group of moths, watching the fifth one fall to the ground. The pile wasn't really a pile as it was just a bunch of dead moths scattered on the ground, but it was good enough.
She only needed two more, but she was so low on her magic that she wasn't sure she would be able to do it. At least not the way she was currently doing so. This was probably the last cast she would be able to do without completely passing out.
The last rock that she threw to zap the moth out of the sky had to almost collapsing, panting softly. Her body shaking from the amount of magic she was using. She needed just one more, but she didn't think she could muster the ability after this one. She would have to think of a new strategy.
With what little strength she had left, she just said fuck it and lunged upwards. There weren't many left anyway and she just needed one more.
She grabbed it with her jaws, falling back to the ground with a grunt as she lay there for a moment, panting. She took a few moments to rest before slowly lifting herself up and starting to gather her bounty of moths. Seven of them, she had done it.
With a deep breath and shaky legs, she carried them out, intent on turning them in and then sleeping.
