ORIGIN - Puppy Love

The feral dingo--who knew herself only as "feral"--had been sniffing about in some ferns when the sudden sounds of chase and a brief scuffle reached her ears. It was very close by, too close, and it sounded about her size.

The dingo crept quickly to the edge of the ferns; there was a short dropoff, and a strange canine not unlike herself but... longer, biting into a fresh kill. Joyful at the prospect of a new companion and still blindly exuberant in her puppylike love of new canine comrades, the dingo--her amber eyes lit with happiness--reared up and sprang down toward the stranger.

Her ears were pricked wholly up, her tail wagging frantically, and suddenly there was a dingo crashing out of the underbrush and dropping down on the maned wolf, ready to tussle and lick and wrestle and play.

Surely that's what the other canine would want, wasn't it?!

Snout bloodied and ears low, the maned wolf was practically oblivious until the next five seconds occurred. It was as if time had slowed down to her - from the moment she was eating to the moment there was a tawny canine on top of her, and she remembered them so well.

The first second, she was eating peacefully.
The second, she had barely heard a sound.
The third, soft footsteps against moss.
The fourth, collision.
And the fifth, her face was wet, not with blood, but with dingo slobber.

The wolf did not how to deal with affection correctly - in fact the first person she had met had actually attacked her after speaking gibberish; but this one-... well, this one was indeed very different. Her new-found companion wasn't growling or doing the weird thing with her maw. She wasn't.. biting, but she was definitely tasting her face.

With a few sharp barks she began idly patting the side of Feral's face with a paw, tail thumping hollowly off against the ground. She wasn't sure what this was, but whatever it was she was mildly enjoying herself.

The dingo wriggled, licking at the paw that pawed her face, nipping at it, then abruptly smooshing her entire body chest-first into the stranger before flopping down on the ground, rolling on her back while pressed right up against the maned wolf.

She was pretty! She had black legs and red fur and bright green eyes, and suddenly Feral was leaping up again, because it was suddenly time to play. She began to race around, her rump low to the ground and ears pinned back, a ridiculously goofy expression on her face with her tongue flapping along out of the side of her mouth like a banner. She streaked off through the moss--then dashed right back, zipping past the maned wolf and away again, pausing only to spin in a circle and drop in a brief play-bow to invite the stranger to play.

To chase.

She let out a couple sharp, excited yips, her own tail thrashing, and bolted off again, hoping that the funny wolf-dog-thing would follow.

Already she had forgotten the meal she hunted down, wide-eyed and wholly focused on this new kind of hunt. It wasn't anything aggressive, no, but it was mildly confusing for the pup. She barked twice and flopped down with her rump high and chest touching the ground, tail curled up and thrashing.

There was more barking as her new friend bounce and galloped around, spinning and running. She barked more, and then she was running after the golden friend. Her legs moved as if they were long wooden stilts rather than legs, as if they may break at any moment.

And yet she did her best to keep up, yipping and whining happily as she ran through Eridanus with her friend, only briefly wondering where she was going or when she'd get there.

The maned wolf didn't have to run far; the dingo came streaking past her again heading in the other direction a moment later, her barking sounding the warning.

At first it was twenty yards distant, echoing the other direction.

Then it was suddenly closer, and louder.

Then Feral burst from the ferns, the barking full-volume right beside the maned wolf--and then she was headed the other way, still barking joyfully. She plunged down a short slope and suddenly there was a series of loud splashes, and if Soul followed her, she'd find a very wet dingo.

Feral was laying on her chest in a shallow stream, lapping at the water, bright amber eyes looking up toward where she'd come from as if waiting for the maned wolf to follow. Her thick brush of a tail swept back and forth, sending small sprays of water to and fro.

She gave a few more barks, too.
