you're somethin' special, want you to know you are !
Fatherhood... it was a beautiful thing. Seeing beings that he had given life to roam Canis made the Bone King truly happy. He felt like himself once more, a King with responsibilities. This was what he had needed to get his head back in the game. So he would begin his work, first patrolling for any Gemlings, then he'd sit and watch the chrysalis that grew within the Chambers. He wondered when it would finally emerge. It had been nearly two cycles since Azazel had blessed the jadeite stone with life.

This would be where his song began.

Azazel ruffled his rufous feathers and gazed down at the chrysalis from his stony perch. Talons clutching the stone tightly, he bowed down a little and cooed. Liora was already dead set on becoming King (which Azazel found quite adorable. Bless her little heart) and Ashtoreth was quite an explorer and seemed to be getting on with her magic. She'd inherited his element of air, and she seemed to be capable of using Mimicry to attempt communication. He was so proud. He'd caught glimpses of Liora scrambling to the top of his perch and pretending to him.

Closing his eyes, he cooed once more, an echoing sound, like what a shrill whistle would make.

Today was a boring day. Ashtoreth was trying to keep herself busy playing with cave rats just as big her. They were a bunch of cheats and meanies, but they didn't try talking to her which made life easier for the little noodle. She felt like she could almost communicate with them.. Even if it was mostly sharing insults and threats! Still, playing with lesser gembounds was only fun for so long. They could be pretty predictable, and mostly they just wanted to be left alone.

So the noodle slunk off, wandering through the boneyard. She could perhaps snap up some bones, maybe look for new ones to add to her own little pile of collected trinkets, but that was tedious. She had no patience today, so that was pretty much out of the question. However, as she began to pad along the worn path, she heard a whistle picking up through the air. Immediately her dark eyes spotted the shape of her father in the distance and she began to bounce with excitement, tromping over as she began to flap her wings eagerly.

The wind picked up around her, whistling weakly in echo of her father's tune. She rushed over as quickly as she could, eager to hear what he was doing. Whistling? Singing? All of this seemed rather exciting. She wished she knew where her mighty steed was-- he loved singing, and she loved listening to him. Her father would make a reasonable substitute, of course.

She flashed her teeth at him in a bright grin, wiggling all the way down to her tushy as she slid to a stop before him, knocking bones everywhere. Her magic seemed to only faintly pick up and echo the whistle, but she thought she was doing a pretty good job!

As he called out, the sound echoed about the cavern, but it was more distorted... fainter. As the rufous vulture turned his crown to face the floor, he could see one of his kin eagerly tromping over, small wings flapping with excitement. As the small noodle skidded to a stop and sat down with the toothiest of grins, Azazel practically melted with cuteness overload. It made him all the more proud to call the little noodle his daughter. Mentally, however, he made a note to introduce Ashtoreth to her other father... that is if he hadn't about killed himself again. Heavens knew where he was, nowadays.

Ruffling his feathers, the quills clicking against one another, the Bone King shifted his wings. The expanse spread out behind him like an ominous cape, as he spread the appendages and heaved only once as he hopped down from his perch and landed on the cave floor with an audible thud!. Carmine eyes blinked as he gazed at his noodley child, and he scampered over to her with bounce in his step. Deep within his lungs, a voice swelled, and lyrics spilled from his beak.

"You're somethin' special, I want you to know!
Your makers must have kissed you in cosmic dust!
You're something special, you've got to know it's true!

Could have been anything, but it's right that you're you.
You’re something special, you've got to shout it out!
If there are doubts, then we will groove it out!
You’re something special, you are the little fang!
You keep on grinning, and this world keeps nagging!"

The little noodle's eyes sparkled as the bone king bread his wings out like a cloak, hopping down to be among the bones with her. His brilliant gaze washed over her, closing the gap between them, and opened his beak.

The child darted up to her father, wriggling up into his feathers. Her teeth brushed through his feathers, playfully preening in the ways she had seen her family do though her mouth wasn't made for it so much. As her father's voice ran out into the air, clear and confident, the tiny fuzzball flapped her wings and echoed after him,

"Ss'methin--speshale!" The words wobbled out in the air, fluttering into existence with great effort from her magic. She wriggled even closer, exclaiming with her magical gift, "ssoMething speshale!" It was a bit garbled, almost as though under water, but there was such joy in her words.

Ashtoreth knew her father was talking about her, and a confidence grew as she kept being his vocal backup, "ssomfin spushal~" Taking each lyric to heart, she flapped her wings harder, trying to shout out the words proudly: "Something!! Spesh'le...!" Her body wiggled, ears twitching as called her little fang-- and she flashed a grin up at her father.

"Lill' Fang, Lil' Fang, Little FaaaAAng!"

As he sang and pranced about, his daughter scrambled right up to him and snuggled into his feathers. Her little teeth brushed his feathers as she playfully preened. Little wings flapped as his words were echoed into a haphazard but beautiful-sounding melody. Azazel smiled and nuzzled the top of his daughter's crown before he continued his song, watching her pearly little fangs glint in the light.

"And if it ever starts to feel bad, little fang...
It's easy to explain, 'cause this world's not tame!"

It was a wild world, indeed. Full of trials and tribulations. Full of dangers and adventures. He knew that he wouldn't always be around for his daughters, but he knew that he could do his absolute best. He was happy that Ashtoreth inherited his element and was able to use mimicry to speak. It would be limited, obviously, but he tried to vary his speech when around the little noodle so she could learn. He pulled at his magicka, hoping to create a melody in the background, a mix of sounds the Ave had heard in his lifetime. Of course, that wasn't happening. He settled for tramping his feet on the ground in a bit of a drum beat.

"And if it ever starts to feel sad, little fang...
Remember that your gifts are your gain!"

He didn't doubt his child's confidence and ability to move on from nearly anything. Ashtoreth was just a bundle of joy. This song was almost his little message of life lessons to the small noodle. Chin up, little soldier. Azazel waved his wings in the air and cupped his little child in it, he clutched her close to his chest and spun about.

"And if it ever starts to pour down, little fang...
The melody sings what the words can't say!"

Azazel nuzzled his child's head once again, preening at her feathers for a moment before he smiled and continued.

"'Cause they might laug, and they might be scared,
Of the wilder thing with the trikes in her hair,
With the spikes in her hair,
With the trikes in her hair!"

listen to me + hear my thoughts

Ashtoreth pranced about, her wings fluttering as she listened to her dad sing his pretty little song. She couldn't quite keep up, but her ears twitched and absorbed every single word. Even as she grew tired and panted softly, she was taking it all in. Every word, every note and song, she would memorize and take to use later. She would find a way to speak just like her daddy, so that she could sing for him to!

As the lammergier danced, stomping his feet to his own song, the noodle bounced back and began to stomp too, rattling bones about with her clacking claws. Although she couldn't make much more than huffing grunts, she began to smack her mouth in little popping noises. Her dad was singing about all sorts of things-- being sad but staying bright and bubbly, something that Ash knew she could do already! Nothing would ever get her down!

The child grinned brightly at her dad, flopping into a pile of bones. She grabbed a smallish one that fit in her paws and clacked it against a large bone to the beat, tail swishing and wings flapping-- silently giggling the whole time. It was so much fun, singing with her pa.

... Again she found herself wondering where Liora had gotten off to. Surely she'd love this whole singing thing! She was loud and excited all the time. Eyes shimmering, she looked up at her father, eager to hear more verses and maybe try to jump in again.
