and while they’re on the ground, we’ll be looking down cause we found the truth
and the fire in our hearts will be blowing up the stars, now we’re coming through,
whenever you’re feeling down inside i promise to take you off to the height

Nemesis did not want to move the children from their birthplace. They had been born here, in Orion, and this was their home for now. She knew that when she was a young one, she would never had wanted to leave. The twins hard each other, and she was sure that they would be fine on their own.

Yet her feet drove her back to them as soon as the lights dimmed in Monoceros. She was afflated to lose hours of sleep keeping track of all three of her children, a heavy, worrying heart drumming in her chest. Orion was so far away, too. It was almost unbearable, but for her perfect calves she would do anything. The feeling of exhaustion was washed away as soon as she tread into Orion, the starlight bathing over her grey form.

With a snort she made her way to the slow tumbling river where she had first met the children. She bowed her head and took eager, thirsty drinks, all too aware that this place had fresher water that tasted so crisp and clean. Monoceros had a dry heat that called to her soul, but this place seemed like it was made for the angels she revered in her head. She wondered if Magdalena liked it here, under the stars, or if she even knew what this place was. Perhaps she didn't remember those fleeting moments of their youth as Nemesis did. It didn't matter too much, regardless. Her Princess was perfect, no matter if her mind kept space for small, insignificant moments of their time together.

Drinking her fill, she raised her head and felt heat lick through her veins. Where were her children? Surely they must be around here, somewhere. She let out a low, loud grumble, stepping down the stream with her eyes open for signs of them.

"Feverfew! Deadnettle! My little Fires, where are you?" She called for them impatiently, her large tail sweeping across the surface of the water. For a moment, her heart skipped a beat as she thought of something disastrous coming to them. She did not know if Orion was truly safe-- she had no way of knowing. Perhaps she should have hushed them back home to her own magic-borne child, but...

Both he and his sister had been exploring a collapsed building near the river, discovering that one in particular had an almost caved-in basement. He listened with fascination at his sister's clumsily put together words failing to describe her vivid imagination, her passionate adventures where they were treasure-seekers going down into the catacombs, braving dangers and collecting all manners of priceless heirlooms stolen from the dead.

It transformed the basement into a long series of winding tunnels they could easily get lost in full of booby-traps and treasure chests, where in reality, the only light source in the one room was what came from the broken ceiling of the floor of the house, and the only adornments were the piles of rubble that had once been the floor over there. But his sister made it into a mountain they had to travel up to reach the most perfect treasure of all - the Diamond of Glory, the gem that would save everything, no matter who died in their reckless adventures.

They were almost to the top of the mountain (or rather, the rubble pile) and he was listening to her horror tales of all who'd fallen off the mountain to fall prey to the skele-rhinos who were really upset to never get to the diamond, his skin covered in goosebumbs at the thought of them down there, when something made him start in fright. The ceiling started to crumble away and a huge pile of the stone floor up above came tumbling down on top of him, and he screamed, thinking a skele-rhino was coming to get him in revenge, and he reacted with his magic.

Before the rocks reached him, he curled up into a ball and shot at it with his magic, lighting up the dim basement with crackling energy, the bolt of lightning sending the rocks flying all across the room.

Fever turned at him, her eyes wide.

Uh oh. He didn't trust that look.
She had seen the whole thing; her brother getting scared at the tumble of rocks, his frightened reactionary cast of magic, the shocking defense that sent the rocks flying. She paused, taking it in, seeing her brother frown at her, as if telling her not to have any ideas -

Then she couldn't help the tumble of words that spewed from her lips - how getting the diamond would be a piece of cake now that they knew what kind of magic he had, and that no carnivore could ever come even near them, whatever a carnivore even was, and that together they could beat any monster that crossed their path! They were unstoppable, with adamantine skin and fire and electricity on their sides!

Her brother rolled her eyes at her, saying nothing, but she could see the pride in him too, could tell he was happy to know he could be strong too. She laughed and nuzzled him, excited for him, calmly congratulating him for shocking those rocks away from him.

They both heard their Mama calling to them, the sound filtered through the building, and with a quick look, they both climbed out by way of the crumbling stairs, seeing their Mama across the river.

"Mama, Mama!" She cried, happy to see her again, crashing through what she knew was a shallow part of the river to get across to her, splashing water all over the place with her heavy steps. "Look Mama, Nettle made a shock at some rocks! Made 'em stop falling! Tell 'im he's great, Mama, tell 'im!"

She laughed and looked back at Nettle, demurely on the other side of the river, looking nervously at the water and shyly at her. She grinned as widely as she could, her tail swishing back and forth.

Nemesis' feet sloshed through the river, ears twisting forward as she heard the crying bleat of her children. She recognized Feverfew's voice, calling for her mama, and immediately started across the river to where her children were running out to meet her.

"Feverfew, there you are," she cooed as she pulled herself to the shallow end, dipping her nose down to nuzzle the child as she spoke praises of her brother. Admiration shimmered in her deep blue eyes as she looked towards Deadnettle. The trino-mother smiled widely at the young boy, imagining the sparks of a storm under his skin. "Is that true, Deadnettle? How strong you've become, and so quickly! It took me a whole cycle to tame my magic." She loved them both so dearly, and to hear that they were coming into their own elements so quickly made her proud.

Nemesis stepped out of the stream and on to solid land so that she could nuzzle Nettle as well. "You both make me so proud." She could gush over them both all day-- she was just so happy to be a mother, even though she had never known her own, if she had even had one.

"Now why were you fighting falling rocks?" She asked, a hint of teasing in her tone.

Mama came across the water for him, knowing that the water made him nervous, and he smiled up at her, quiet love in his eyes. She knew what scared him, how to soothe him, just like his sister did, and he loved her for it. The admiration and praise she showered him in made him incredibly warm inside.

"Falling on me. Got scared." He explained, looking at his sister. "In basement."

When she crossed the water to come to him, he moved into her touch happily, feeling completely and utterly comforted by her. Bliss sat easily in his heart, with the discovery and power of his magic and the company of his favorite gems.

Fever came up to them, stars in her eyes, and he moved to nuzzle her too, knowing she was just brimming with excitement. The heat of the two fire rhinos made the outside air feel like a cold shower of water, and he scooted up close to them both to enjoy the warmth, their heat like a warm blanket inviting him home.
"Yeah yeah, Mama!" She said happily, after returning the soft touch of her brother with all the love she had inside her. "We were in this basemen' an' climbin' this mountain an' fighting off evil skele-rhinos that were gonna eat us and then rocks starts falling and Nettle scared 'em off! We were almost up the mountain when you called us Mama, and we hafta go back for the treasure!"

She gazed up at Mama and her horns and her tough mottled skin and her gigantic crystalized gem on her nose and the glinting love in her eyes and rubbed her little nose against Mama's leg. "But we cn' do that later Mama, since you're here n' all,"

A thought occurred to her, making her even more excited. "Oh, Mama! Do you wanna see Papa? He's really tall an' nice an' feeds us yummy things an' an' he teaches us all sorts a' things! He was there when we woke up together!"

The trinoceros listened carefully to her children, a softness in her gaze that she held only for those she truly loved-- no one but them and her other child, Hestia, and of course her princess, Magdalena. They had quite the active imaginations, but she couldn't help but imagine that there really was a treasure her precious babies had found... Part of her wanted to see it for herself, but Feverfew quickly nuzzled her and changed the subject.

Nemesis straightened up a bit when the calf mentioned a "Papa"-- she did not know who they could possibly mean, but perhaps there was another rhinoceros...? No, that was unlikely. She would have found the bull by now, surely. She dipped her head down low to her children, giving them both a long, curious stare.

"I would love to meet him," she answered finally, smiling softly. "And you can tell Papa all about your little adventure, too. Maybe we can all find the treasure together."

Nettle sat there in quiet happiness, this slight little smile on his face that was rather easy to miss, when Mama and his sister spoke to each other. This, this was perfect. Mama was perfect and wonderful and safe, and his sister was happy and the little circle all loved each other with no hesitation. There were no flaws here, no demons, nothing to fear. And soon, according to them both, they would see Papa again, making them a complete family.

Was there....anything better than this? There couldn't be. There would never be anything better than this, than the love so easily shared, a give-and-take with no price, for all three of them loved equally.

Mama was perfect, and so was his sister; he felt like he loved Mama just as much as his sister, even. How could he not?
When Mama said she wanted to meet Papa, she took in an incredibly happy breath and jumped up and down, the stars in her eyes. "Oh, Mama! You'll like 'im you really will! I thin' he's over there, by the big sitty thing? Right Net?" She looked over to him and his soft little smile and he nodded just a little bit. "Right! So less' go!"

She barreled down the lane towards the throne of Orion, laughing and skipping all the way, not seeing that Nettle was shaking his head just a little, getting up slowly to walk a sedate pace with his Mama. They both followed her, making sure she stayed within sight, however.

Nemesis smiled softly as she followed after Nettle and Fever, her heart swelling with warmth. Whoever their father was-- "papa"-- she was sure he was a decent enough fellow. Probably about as trashy as any other man, but really, he had kept these two treasures alive and safe and that was enough for her to consider him worthy of her time.

A dangerous thing, really. The Merrymen should be so lucky that she was bound to her daughter Hestia and Magdalena-- otherwise, she might have abandoned them at first sight of this opportunity. Meeting this so called Papa would be an interesting experience, at the very least.

And it wasn't long before her darling children brought her to the Lord of Herbivore's Throne.
