PERSONALITY

GENTLE . BOOKWORM . CURIOUS
Hawthorne is a strange creature. Even as he grows into his elegant, slender form, he tends to hunch when he walks, unconsciously making himself appear smaller. His long tail is often curled around one of his back legs like a built-in security blanket, while his pelt is kept only spottily clean - he doesn't seem to care much for earthly things like that.

Indeed, what he most seems to care for are stories. Hawthorne will sit, captivated, by any tale, for hours, no matter if it be happy, sad, violent or peaceful. Any story at all is better than food, water or air to this little hybrid. This love for the fantastical will grow into a want, and then a need, to be able to write all of the stories he's heard down. Unfortunately, this will also bring up his one major dilemma, and the source of not a little bit of internal turmoil and, later on, some short-temperedness: his lack of paws.

Hooves are, after all, rather unsuitable for writing with.

Anxiety seems to grip Hawthorne from birth, even with his obvious love of his family - whenever he tries to say much of anything, the words all crowd up in his throat, and he ends up slinking away, or simply watching, intensely uncomfortable. This also bleeds into his short temper, although as a child and even into adulthood this tends to be over small things; failing a spell, not being able to respond to a friend, or, even worse, forgetting a story.

Even with this mix of temper and anxiety - something that could brew into a nasty combination, if they were present in anyone else - Hawthorne is, to a fault, gentle. He hesitates to hunt, dislikes seeing anything, even plant life, in pain, and is violently discomforted by any form of, well, violence; be it a physical fight or a vocal one, he will try to distract the combatants from it, or, if worst comes to worst, put himself in between them. His anxiety, it seems, is trumped by some inherited heroics, in such cases.

SHORT-TEMPERED . ANXIOUS . SELECTIVELY MUTE

RP SAMPLE

Hunger sat heavy in his gut, a thick, burning thing. Hawthorne sighed, splayed out rather ridiculously among the stones of Orion - he hadn't bothered to move after ducking behind a building and tumbling to the ground at the sight of a shadow passing by. Now he was almost sure it had been nothing, just a trick of his half-formed vision, and his brow furrowed, grumpily tapping a hoof against the ground, glaring at the foot in question like it had personally wronged him. In a way, it had - all of his mother's stories, all his father's factoids - all of it was just... floating around in his head, seemingly stuck, congealing into a thick, spoiled soup of mixed-up details and forgotten main characters.

Frustrated, the tom began to rise - only to flinch back at the sight of a cave rat. The rat froze seemingly in tandem, and there began the tiniest standoff in the history of standoffs: a boy and a rodent, both hungry, bored, and mildly fed-up with their current state of affairs. Gulping, Hawthorne opened his mouth to give the little thing some sort of reassurance - something like I don't fancy rats or I'd rather not eat anyone, actually, please do continue on your way - but the words all stopped up against the back of his teeth, and instead of speaking, the babe simply shivered. He shivered until the rat darted away, until his stomach growled again, and didn't stop until he was finally able to recall one of his favorite stories without forgetting that the main character's best friend's name was Patience.

It was a very nice name, indeed.

Personality

From the moment of his birth, Hawthorne has always loved the sound of his own voice. That's the most obvious thing about him from the precise moment of his birth; anyone he meets will most likely be taken aback as they are suddenly bombarded by his overly-excitable, and also incredibly loud enthusiasm. Hawthorne is always out there to meet new things and make new friends, whether that be with the cave idiot or a predator trying to eat him. Not exactly flighty, he'd much rather talk than fight but on the other hand will not hesitate to kick in someone's face and after that regale them of every detail on why he did it.

This brings to the surface Hawthorne's biggest flaw. He struggles to connect to others emotionally, enjoying the experience of conversation but struggling with longer-lasting attachment. It's something that he seems to know, perhaps unconsciously, but as he grows he may feel more and more alienated, an illusion created in his own mind as he craves to know how it feels. Quite apathetically, he may close off to those he feels more attached to than others or grow more frustrated around them.

Secretly, Hawthorne's greatest fear is falling in love.

If someone were to break through the shell Hawthorne has built for himself, they may or may not regret it; they'll find an unexpectedly hyper individual, completely devoted beyond the point of obsession, controlling and easily hurt by the slightest misstep. But of course, it's never him that's in the wrong; he's, once again, a victim to his own apathy.

As mentioned before, Hawthorne adores the sound of his own voice. Sometimes if there's no-one around he may talk to himself, but generally speaking, he fancies himself as a singer and will practice at every chance he gets. Though he generally does so on his own, Hawthorne will not protest if someone asks to hear. In fact, a proper audience is the one thing he truly craves. The hybrid is most happy(amongst other emotions... that depends on the song) when he's singing, and a duet is one of the few things which can help tap into his heart...

RP Sample

Since the moment of his emergence, Hawthorne had been ready to greet the cave and everyone in it. So he had! Every subtle drip or pitter-patter of a cave mouse's paws was responded by the appealing clack-clacking sound of his own hooves. He raised said hooves higher with every pace so that the sound would get steadily louder, and then Hawthorne's ears would twitch to the echoes. No matter which tunnel he ventured on into, new noises never failed to greet him.

But, none of them were voices.

A soft sigh whistled out through the hybrid's nose and he began to look around, swinging his head dramatically; for it was only one eye that could see. The benitoite jewel in his other eye rendered it useless. Pretty perhaps(or so he reckoned), but useless. Hah, at least the sounds of the cave far more appealed to him than sights ever had. Hawthorne perked up a little at that, pink nose crinkling. He realized the clack-clacking of his hooves had halted, and so he walked on.

The caves seemed empty, confusingly so, and it was getting a little lonely. Hawthorne wasn't too bothered, but he felt the silence needed a little something... more.

And so as he moved, he began to hum a little rythmn that shared the purrs of his father. He thought of the words himself as he moved, and mumbled them vaguely under his breath before he finally rumbled out a baritone. "Great caverns... uh... and darkness brooding... Thousand secrets waiting there..." Hm. Well. He was still learning.

But on a brighter note, the cave felt livelier already.
