Nora, without really thinking about it, snuggled gratefully right up to Chou. He was a lot warmer than her, and she felt comforted in their “hug” of sorts. She thought some more about the fact that he couldn’t see, but then she decided that she wouldn’t be sad about it, because there was no point to that. The duckling perked up when the peacock called her Nora. Yes… that sounded right. It didn’t sound like her real, full name, but if he wanted to call her Nora, that was okay with her. She didn’t know it now, but Chou would be the only one she’d ever let call her that. It would be a special thing between only the two of them.

He asked her in a quavering voice if his own name, Chou, sounded right to her ears. She smiled and replied in a soft voice, “Yes, it sounds perfect.” Any name he’d come up with would have sounded perfect to her. She didn’t have an ear for this sort of thing. Whatever name one used was the one they were meant to have. That was her young opinion on the matter. Nora and Chou. That was who they were. A duck and peacock, destined, she was sure, for great things.

But for now, exploring the swamp would be the only thing she’d want to do. She loved her home already, and wanted to waddle and swim through it with Chou at her side. She looked up at him happily. “Let’s be friends forever, okay?”

Chou let out a happy little cheep as Eleanor snuggled up to him, and he, in turn, snuggled up to her so that the two chicks were pressed into one another. Chou grinned at her response- that he'd gotten it right, and the name was exactly what she'd wanted- although he couldn't see it, and didn't know. Somehow, the expression was simply instinctive, and although he couldn't see her smiling back, it didn't worry him. "I'm glad of that," he cheeped happily, clising his sightless eyes in contentment.

Just feeling her fluffy little body against his own was enough; he could almost feel the happiness that radiated off her in waves, just as the emotion did from him. He didn't know what she was or what the world around them looked like; perhaps if he had then it would have seemed gloomier with it's deep and murky marsh and hanging mists, but he couldn't, and thus didn't care.

At the little duck's words though, his formerly closed, glazed and clouded eyes flickered open. He fluttered his tiny wings and reached over, to try and snuggle his head into her fluffy body. "Silly Nora, of course we'll be friends forever!"

"Nora Speaks."

Nora was so glad when Chou said that they would be friends forever. She continued to allow him to hug her, and she stood still in his embrace, feeling very calm. Yes, everything would be perfect as long as they stayed together. She would help him traverse the rather dangerous swamp, and he would help her be brave. And together they would be happy. She didn’t say anything else then, feeling like words were pointless then. They’d said all they’d needed to say, and now they could just enjoy each other’s company and maybe go exploring soon. Or maybe just fall asleep and take a nap. It didn’t matter. Either way, she’d be happy.

Chou didn't need sight to know that this was meant to be. He couldn't see the gloom or the mist, but he could feel the chill that toyed with his damp feathers and the small warmth that radiated from the downy lump under his wing. This was perfect; Chou wanted this very moment to last forever. Words weren't needed at this moment; Chou let out tiny peeps occasionally, a sound that had its origins in pure bliss.

Nora wasn't responding with any sounds of her own, which made Chou comfortable in the thought that this was right, for even despite the silence reigning in between them, Chou knew that this was how it was meant to be. How they were meant to be.

The longer Chou waited, basking in the glow of the bond that was forming between them, the quieter the little peacock became. His eyelids soon began to droop, breaths beginning to lengthen. as time dragged on, the scents, sounds and feelings of the world around began to fade more and more into nullness. Before long, Chou began to hear her voice again; but unbeknownst to her, he'd found himself in another world entirely; one where his short existence was woven into a little basket of loving memories.

On the exeterior, Chou had curled tightly around the little duckling that was Eleanor, and went to sleep with her tiny mass tucked under his wing.
