ORIGIN

There was too much going on inside the mind of the newly hatched Othello. His mind raced with questions, wondering many things he had been wondering since he hatched. There was no telling how long he had been inside his chrysalis, so what had happened since? He needed to get to Monoceros, to see if the Merrymen waited on him, to see if anyone he cared about had returned. It was unlikely, but he needed to know. His heart ached with the loss of his companion and friends, or at least what he considered as such. There was a pang of heartbreak knowing he wasn't enough to keep any of them around. He needed to feel wanted.

After questioning the gembound that had been present when he hatched with his newfound ability to talk with his mind, he set off to figure things out. It wasn't long however that he decided to not leave Polaris yet. Maybe something here could tell him how long he'd been out. Although the lights were completely out, Othello hardly needed to see. He apparently knew Polaris well enough to not run into any of the larger stones, the spire, or fall into the river. Honestly, he hadn't moved but just a few feet away from where he hatched, but he still felt safe.

It was dark however, and that would make it difficult getting out of Polaris and back home to Monoceros. He needed someone to help him, but that would require contact with someone else. It'd be nice if someone he knew showed up, but that was terribly unlikely at this point.

It had been five cycles — five whole cycles — since Macawi had spoken to or in any way interacted with a Gembound who wasn’t Tangakwenu, her Rainbow Spinner Familiar. And even Macawi, crazy Macawi, was going a little bonkers from the silence. Especially since she had just awoken from a long nap to find herself stuck inside a chrysalis. Again. What?! Was she a child again? Why were there walls of black opal surrounding her body? Not that she could tell it was black opal for sure, since she couldn’t see anything. But even after fifteen cycles, Macawi still remembered the feeling of her lungs begging for air as her tiny little paws pressed hard against her opal egg, just as they did now.

She didn’t have to push hard. The walls of her cocoon shattered after a moment or two, and her lungs filled with sweet clear air — but she still couldn’t… see anything? By the Gods, had she gone blind in her chrysalis? Macawi had no idea how to feel about that. She sat, covered in amniotic fluid, staring with wide, unseeing light brown eyes as the darkness swallowed her. She wasn’t frightened, exactly, but she was intrigued. Why had her eyes stopped working after she’d fallen asleep? “Tangak?” she called out. “Are you here?”

No answer. In fact… Macawi could not feel her connection to the bird at all, as if he had simply disappeared from the Cave altogether. But that didn’t make any sense. There was no way out of the Cave. No… She must have lost her mental connection to him when she’d fallen Asleep. Sighing, the coyote just continued sitting there in the dark, wondering what to do now. Vaguely, she was aware of the noise of another Gembound drawing nearer, but she said nothing, feeling… not particularly cheerful at the moment.
