It was dark, so dark. And so silent. Joy stumbled blindly through the caves, somehow making his way to Polaris. Or what he thought was Polaris. He hadn't been paying any attention, just walking on instinct, his legs moving on their own. His eyes were blurred, and he wasn't focusing on anything. What was there to focus on? It was dark, and for the first time in his life, he was alone.
No Emendri. No Fira. No Destiny.
He had never been so alone. Destiny was dead, and he had no idea where Emendri or Fira were. He had just wandered away after Destiny's death, so overcome with grief that he ignored everyone else. After he had cried his heart out when he saw Destiny, dead, tears didn't come again. His heart felt like it was empty, with a hole in it where all the happiness he'd had trickled out.
His name felt like it was mocking him. Joy. What joy was there, with one mother dead, and the other nowhere to be found? He was alone. He had no one, and it might stay that way. And if he did find someone, what would they think of him? He was a hybrid. He was weird, and he'd always known it. But he had never seen anyone other than his family, never seen anyone who would judge him. That didn't change the fact that he was weird looking.
He sighed, and paused, looking around. But he couldn't see a thing - it was still too dark, just as it had been for nearly 2 cycles. It was still silent, and it felt suffocating. The walls that he couldn't see seemed to be closing in, and he collapsed. He had stopped thinking and started focusing, and was starting to regret it. He wished he could just make it stop, to not feel so empty, to not feel as though he was suffocating. He crouched down, his weird, webbed feet over his eyes, and tried to get the feelings to just go away.
