In the depths of the maw, hidden amongst all the leaves in a clearing where saplings and fresh ferns hid the ashes of a long-ago disaster, lay a prize that other worlds may have fought wars for, had they not known of the monster curled in its depths. An enormous diamond of glistening crimson lay in this clearing like an egg, nine feet across its diameter. Whilst every inch of its surface glistened redder than blood, looking into its centre would reveal a dark heart, something blacker than the night, as though it was filled with tar.
This chrysalis had lain here for many cycles, and now it was about to hatch. A soft straining creak emerged from within as something moved against its boundaries. And the sound continued, becoming ever more frequent until, abruptly, a crack appeared on its surface. And then another. And another. Wherever a chip broke free, thick black slime oozed out and poured down onto the ground.
One side was soon gushing like a waterfall from a blood-red tomb.
Finally, with barriers weakened, there was an almighty groan and the great diamond shattered, a great squelch as an enormous lump oozed out. Whatever it was's shape was completely obscured by tar, and it would seem at that moment to any onlooker that whatever had been inside had not survived; it was an illusion not lessened by the acrid stench that heaved from the slimy mass in waves, the stench of countless months spent festering in the gloom.
There was no movement.
