With the quartz stars sparkling high above and an eerie chill in the air, there was nothing to suggest to the inhabitants of Orion that anything was out of the ordinary. The stone was cold beneath the paw, glowing crystals glimmered and bathed the world in an ethereal light. Pools of water reflected the fallen city like sheets of glass, still and perfect in the complete and imposing silence.
Suddenly, an unearthly screaming rent the air, echoing throughout the alleyways and deserted streets. There was the furious sound of scrabbling claws and a deep hissing. Occasional squawks and shrill screams followed suit of the awful screech that had at first echoed and it was clear that the terrible noises were made by creatures locked in battle. Though anyone only listening would have assumed some monstrous creature to be the source, it was in fact two large cave rats that had come into conflict; one of them a rusty red colour, and the other a pale brown like walnuts. Tails thrashing like snakes and beating against the ground, their torsos were locked together as each fought for a death-grip on the other.
Although dominance scuffles among red rats were common within their colonies, very rarely was it that greater gembounds would bear witness to a fight to the death. In fact... very rarely was it that red rats fought at all.
From the beginning the winner was already clear; the rusty rat was far smaller at a glance than its walnut brother, and the longer they fought the quicker it tired. But never did it make any move to flee, as any creature facing doom should know to. A final shriek split the air like a butchers knife as the walnut rat's ugly yellow teeth buried themselves deep into the other's throat, drawing thick red blood bubbling to the surface. The dying rat's jaws opened wide, and it opened and closed its gaping mouth even as blood coloured its breaths.
The walnut rat dropped it to the floor and ground its teeth together in fury, every inch of hair standing on end. But it didn't leave, approaching the rat again to sniff its dying foe. Even as the breaths gurgled in its throat, the larger rat began tearing into its foe, removing huge chunks of flesh and swallowing them. It already looked fat, but it ate as though it hadn't fed properly in months, and continued feeding, clawing holes in its quest for the juiciest meat, its eyes crazed and red-ringed before its entire head was buried in meat, breaths emerging in sickening squelches.
It kept on eating, seemingly determined to finish every last bite.
