This time, something seemed to actually happen. It was slow and gradual at first, and then everything changed all at once. Before too long, Zevruu realized that he couldn't see. He was shrouded in almost complete darkness. There was very little light. The only light he could see came from his own soft glow and the baubled necklace he wore.
Having gotten so used to the light, the sudden dark freaked him out. Had the lights in the cave gone out again? Or had he done that? Perhaps his constant spell attempts made the lights stop working. He didn't know how that would have happened though. This must be a spell he's never used before. He didn't really like it, and wished he could bring the light back. But be didn't know how. All he could do was try hopefully one more spell. Then he'd go back to Orion.

This attempt came much easier, and he realized he could see a little better. Looking around, he saw a blue tint everywhere and knew his eyes were glowing. He smiled at that. He really liked this spell. Ever since he had seen it on the blacksmith, he knew he had to have it. He was glad that he did.
At that moment, a call pierced the air, and he realized he could smell fire and smoke. Had the fire come back? The call, though far enough away that he couldn't pick out specific words, held a tone of desperation. That seemed like his cue to get out of there. He had used just about every spell, and it was time to go back to Orion. It was still dark, and he hoped that wouldn't last. Already, it was getting to be lighter, and he was able to find the exit from Eridanus into Tunnel I without much trouble. He quickly dove through and out of the cave.
