Envy was wandering through the streets with a lopsided lope, their belly the fullest it had been yet and their spirits relatively high, at least compared to what had become the norm. They'd managed to absorb enough water to make them dreadfully ill at first, but once the excess water had been purged from their system, they felt almost like the world was their oyster. They'd found their niche, which happened to be magic.
Who would have guessed that such a little thing would be such a gifted magician? Envy nursed the thought, their jealous little mind crooning and curling around the thought, growing it. Their success with magic had planted the seed for what might one day would become their lifeblood; even now, they could see that it would be much better for them to skip ingesting food and water entirely. It was far easier to just take everything they needed using magic, when they needed it.
Sure, everyone else might be able to taste it.
Sure, everyone else might feel properly full and nourished.
and sure Envy couldn't! But so what? The others still needed it!
Envy tried to cull the bitterness that stole into their heart, and managed to push it back. They shook their head. This was their triumph, all theirs! they were a magic user now! And they would let no-one take it away from them.
Envy found themselves grinning for the first time in their life, baring sharp, white little fangs.

Ever since Flicker’s encounter with that dumb goose, she’d been more determined than ever to practice her magic! She had to be better — do more — than anyone! And it didn’t stem from jealousy, exactly. It was more that… well… the goose’s words had stung more than Flicker would ever let on. She had felt bad about herself ever since, replaying her failure to produce sparks over and over in her head until it had nearly driven her mad. Now she was pacing around in circles wondering if she could ever really… do anything well in her life. What if she never perfected this skill, small as it was? What would that say about her? That she was… weak. Or maybe just too stupid to grasp the concept of magic. No. She couldn’t let that happen.
She closed her eyes, squeezed them shut hard, and willed the sparks into her fur, imagining the sharp, bright points of light jumping here and there. And suddenly… “Ow!” Flicker yelped and turned to see her body covered in sparks, snapping and zapping her fur and skin as they moved around. Her fur was standing on end from the static. “Ow!” she said again, though it wasn’t so painful as to warrant real shouting. Her ow’s were rather quiet, the pain more of an annoyance than anything else.
Besides, she couldn’t even focus on the pain the shocks, since she was just so surprised at the amount of sparks in her fur! She had never seen this much! So, she really could use magic to the fullest! She pranced around happily, unaware of the weasel who was probably seeing her acting like a fool. “Yes!” she shouted, excited at her triumph.

Envy had wandered for a while, the stream where they'd awoken earlier a quiet trickle in the far, far distance. They'd never traveled so far before! it was exciting, almost scary... but far more exciting. The little one's fur puffed slightly with anticipation and the thrill of it all.
They continued to pad onwards, slowing to a crawl, only to suddenly stop as they heard a voice. Again, their fur began to puff out, but instead of nerves or bitterness, they felt yet another wave of triumph, eagerly wanting to boast, brag, and jealously taunt on what they'd learned. A savage little thrill ran through their entire body, a shiver accompanying it.
They began to walk again, hurrying even though their heart was pounding even from their short jog.
However, as they rounded a sharp corner and stopped, panting, the stranger in full view, Envy's heart sank. How were they doing that?! there was no way the little weasel could do anything like that! They'd not learned anything like it! They sniffed, eyes prickling with tears, but they found themselves unable to turn and run away, so instead they whimpered, trying to stand tall, and yelled;
"How are you doing that!? I want to do that, too!" Envy's voice was slightly high-pitched and whining, but they daren't approach, instead standing stock-still, shaking their head to try and get rid of the bitter tears. "Show me! I need it!"

’How are you doing that!? I want to do that, too!’
Flicker turned around suddenly, caught by surprise at the voice. She squinted in the dark and saw a little noodle-y shape standing in front of her. She was about to say something, opening her mouth to speak, but the noodle interrupted her.
’Show me! I need it!’
“Hold on!” Flicker said, annoyance clear in her voice. “I can’t show you anything if you keep talking.” Once she was satisfied that the weasel wouldn’t interrupt her again, she continued. “When I wanna do sparks, I just think about it really hard, and they appear. That’s all there is to it! Look!” She squeezed her eyes shut and concentrated on the sparks on, and then, sure enough, she felt the electricity zapping through her fur. She grinned and turned her body sideways so the weasel could see the pinpricks of light. “See?”
They went away after maybe twenty seconds, long enough for Flicker to show off a bit, and then she turned to face the weasel fully again and sat down. “Now you try. Just think really hard about making sparks in your fur. Sometimes it doesn’t work, but you can always try again!” She smiled to herself, realizing how nice it was to be a teacher to someone.

Envy opened their mouth, clearly about to protest, only to close it again, an annoyed look in their face and their lips pressed firmly shut. The canine was going to teach them? Envy looked surprised. That was easier than they'd hoped, but the feeling also came with a twinge of annoyance. Envy should be the teacher, not anyone else! Once again, envy bubbled in their chest and they grunted, hanging their head slightly in shame but unable to resist paying attention.
Envy listened to their words, licking their lips slightly, and feeling the cold marble of their gem against the roof of their mouth. Their fur bristled slightly as they saw the ease with which the other kept their magic going, and wished that they could do better. They blinked, before closing their eyes for a while. When they opened them again, the coyote's spell had worn off. The spell was cool and they felt longing and envy growing in their stomach, but no matter how hard they tried and concentrated, it wasn't enough to set off any sparks, only make them bristle more. They tried to tap into that despair that had opened the floodgates to knowledge the last time, but the little weasel gave up after their second try, stamping their paw on the ground and pouting.
"It's not gonna work," they sighed after a while, gloominess leaking into their stance. "I can only do stupid things, like changing colour a little and drinking water outta the air... and even that makes me throw up!" the little one approached, close enough that they could see just how much larger the coyote was than them. But, with their closeness to Aaliyah, they didn't seem at all afraid. They plopped themselves back on their haunches, looking longingly over the little coyote as though craving to see the lights again.
However, when none appeared they lay down on their belly, their jaw set with frustration.
"I wanna do something cool like that."
Bitterness giving way to foul temper, Envy decided to have one last try. They wanted to look cool, and they wanted to right now! the young one sucked in air through their teeth and focused, long body curling in on itself in effort. They felt something within click into place, their jaws opening slightly as pitch-black smoke pooled out, like it had in the last temper tantrum they'd had; fear had given way to magic. And now, that same smoke curled about them, enshrouding them, and their eyes once again opened wide in surprise. They'd almost forgotten the last time this had happened, and now the shock was all too new.
"O-oh! I can do this, too. Can you do this?" though their voice showed surprise, it was triumphant as well, and they peered closely at the canine, looking for a flash of jealousy.

Flicker frowned, frustrated because this weasel was feeling so… inadequate. Honestly, it was a feeling she understood, but seeing it in others just made her annoyed. “C’mon, you can do it!” she tried to encourage them. She wasn’t sure why she cared so much about someone she’d just met. It was just that they seemed… so similar. They both had to do magic to feel worthy. Flicker supposed that was why she really wanted this Gembound to succeed—
And suddenly they did! Although it was a bit difficult to see in the dark, the weasel’s body seemed to wrap itself in shadow, and their eyes lit up with an eerie glow. Flicker actually yelped in surprise and skittered back a little bit before she realized that nothing bad was going to happen. The weasel then asked her if she could do this too, and she sat down to concentrate.
What ended up happening was that her heart rate increased a little bit, but it wasn’t enough for her to really noticed and she assumed it was from the adrenaline rush of seeing something a bit frightening. She just thought that nothing had happened, and pouted. “Nope, I guess not. But that’s pretty cool!”

Envy felt a strange feeling arise in response to their encouragement, not dissimilar to the feeling of getting what they want, when they wanted it, but they hadn't known that they'd wanted this. Why? Envy had been so wrapped up in their own problems that they hadn't had the opportunity to experience proper kinship with anyone. There was their mother, of course; but that wasn't the same. No matter how much Aaliyah adored them, she was still big, and strong, and they still relied on her. This canine on the other hand, although they were bigger than themselves and that still stung, thought that they had it in them to do something!
When they yelped and retreated, Envy was filled with yet more pride, although it may have been slightly misguided. They'd managed to do that! They'd induced a feeling in them! Fear, even! now, that was cool! Envy's little teeth flashed behind a sheen of dark and they were filled with excitement.
They'd never felt so powerful.
With shadows still wreathing their lithe form, eyes beaming lilac, Envy thought it safe enough to scuttle in close, peering at the coyote curiously. The shadows wreathing their small form began to fade, the glow in their eyes steadily dying away as they bounded up. By the time they reached the coyote, they were just an ordinary weasel once more. The little one puffed out their chest, looking proud. "Yes! it is!" they said, as though they'd meant to cast that spell the entire time! With two accidental triggers, Envy found themselves wondering if they'd be able to cast the magic intentionally next time. they remembered clearly now the feeling that had swept through them as the floodgates had opened, and focused on it, on the centre of power in their throat.
A world of magic was open to them, Envy thought, with a thrill. And surely they could use it to lead an ordinary life, one day? An uncharacteristic rush of hope gushed through them. One day, they'd be able to get whatever they needed, whatever they wanted.
Maybe then they'd be satisfied.
They shook themselves seemingly out of a daze, settling back on their haunches and raising their front paws to their chest so that they could be just that little bit closer to eye level. "Who are you, anyway?"

Flicker was a bit surprised by the weasel’s sudden need to be so close to her. She felt the urge to back up some more but fought it off. As long as the weasel didn’t attack her then she supposed it was fine for them to be close. They stared right at her, getting close to her eye level, and asked who she was. She grinned, puffing out her chest a bit. “I’m Flicker,” the coyote said proudly. “Bet you can’t tell why.” And then she tried to access her spark Magic. But it failed. She sighed. Of course it would fail now. “I’m Flicker cos of the… sparks I can make…” She glared down at her own fur, as if it were her body’s fault the Magic had failed. “When it works, that is. Who are you?”

Envy tilted their head slightly. They could indeed see why. They blinked slowly, paws still folded against their chest. Flicker, eh? The little weasel thought it interesting how Gembounds came to choose their names; themselves and Flicker had based their names on a trait of themselves- whether that be personality or otherwise. On the other hand, where had folks like Amras and Aaliyah picked up their names. Envy found themselves wondering who they could be, had they chosen a different name.
"Huh, I can see... Suits you," they said, shaking their head to clear away their wandering thoughts, but seeming as though they were reluctant to let on any semblance of a compliment. Childish embarrassment caused their ears to burn.
But they didn't want a different name; their name belonged to them, and them alone, and they would jealously protect it if anyone were to question them. they were Envy.
The little weasel couldn't help but smile a smug grin at their failure to summon any sparks. After so many close shaves with magic recently, they were beginning to feel themselves worn thin, but they wanted desperately to show their prowess. So, they called on a power that seemed very much ingrained, remembering Amras and their mother's reaction upon their very first success.
However, it seemed that they'd done enough; they reached into their gem, but instead of power, felt exhaustion flooding through them. They sank onto all four paws, eyes closing. The little weasel sighed quietly and shook their head in order to drive it away and bring themselves back from the haze, annoyance showing in small bared fangs and their bristling pelt.
"Uh... Envy. I'm Envy." And then a wide grin spread accross their face. "Bet you can't tell why."
They giggled as they asked the same question she had.

It took Flicker a moment to realize why Envy’s name was Envy. She sat there, and was actually about to them that, no, she couldn’t know why their name was an emotion. And then it hit her and she felt a bit stupid. “Right,” she said, grinning in an embarrassed sort of way. “It’s cos you wanted to know how to do my spell. That makes sense.” What a horrible name, though, she thought to herself, privately. She almost said so out loud, but decided it would be better not to be so mean to someone she barely knew. Why would you name yourself Envy, for being envious. That’s not exactly… a fun emotion to be associated with. Outwardly, she just smiled at them, tail wagging a little bit back and forth.
