It was nice of Gabriel to stand still while she feed. As of a matter of fact, they seemed very generous indeed. She was excited to tag along with them and serve as its assistant. Valeria wondered what they would be doing. How would they serve the caves?

She couldn't wait to find out.

When Valeria had her fill, she wiped the blood from her nose and cleaned it off her thumbs. She saw that some of her messing drinking had accidently dripped blood on the dog's fur. Valeria kindly groomed that patch, as a way of saying thank you. Eventuallyn she made her way to the dogs head and nestled cozily in the center of its crown of iron pyrite.

"So what do you research?" She asked.

"Listen to me."

Gabriel's ears pricked slightly as Valeria appeared to finish her meal and felt her cleaning the fur at the base of their ear. "Thank you," the dog murmured politely. Its wound stung, vaguely, but the flow didn't seem too dire, and they thought it would probably only take a few short minutes to clot.

The little one then made their slow way up towards its head, and Gabriel felt her clambering precariously over the sharp thorns of their pyrite crown. But the lack of any mention implied that she hadn't harmed herself on them, which was a relief. They didn't think they could offer much by way of insurance, after all. They flicked their ears in a moment of consideration before answering. "I study gems, more than anything, relating especially to how they create our biological forms and manifest our magic. More importantly, I study the ways in which the physical body can be destroyed, healed, and... improved," Gabriel gave a slow nod as they thought of the correct term. "Our race can be feeble when it comes down to it. We can be broken, wounded, or beaten down by diseases that cannot even be seen. Extinction is a very real possibility. My research aims to strengthen our race so that we, as the biological marvels that we are, will continue to exist long into eternity."

Although Gabriel failed to mention was the sacrifices that would need to be made to achieve that goal. For now, such was unimportant.
