With the lights return Amras had spent a good bit of time going from room to room, scouting out what would be his next training location. Growing up in Monoceros he had perfected his basic skills with magic, creating a small tunnel system which now contained glowing glyphs representing each element. In Pisces he had trained long and hard to reach the end of the linear elements, and in the process accidentally discovered an odd property of wood. In Polaris before being driven out by the storm he had stumbled upon the basis of the internal elements and been given insight into the final four. Now here he was in a room full of mist, ready to begin a full day of training. Monoceros was too windy for this, and most other rooms too full of life. Here in the mists he could let lose all manner of experimental usages.

His goal for today: replicate the spell the glowing wolf had used in their battle against the spider. Earth magic no doubt, an external element.

As the gryphon's light steps led him to a large patch of mostly-solid ground in the marsh he stopped and sat, listening around for sounds of conversation or any other indication of life that might be harmed. Minutes passed in complete silence as the mists slowly swirled past him, his eyes closed and ears attuned to the world around him. Rats, birds, insects; these were all he could hear. No sign of any greater gembound within range.

A small spark of light began to glow in the fog as Amras started collecting energy and feeding it into the ground below him. He had learned from the state change spell how to hold onto energy outside his body and shape it with intention. That had been a part of his native element though, and in empty air no less. Could he keep the process up even as the spell seeped into a foreign substrate and began shaping outside his direct influence?

The ground below him began to glow with that almost invisible white energy as his spell wove into it, seeking something unknown. After a few seconds a small portion of the ground gave back, transforming the white energy into deep brown. In doing so, however, that portion of energy got separated from the rest, removing it from the gryphon's control. With that section stolen away and absorbed into the ground the rest of the spell destabilized, dissipating with a series of pops and crackles which harmlessly shifted the soft soil under him.

Amras opened his eyes again and looked at the patch of earth energy that was quickly fading away into the ground. Not a full success by any means, but he was on the right track.

Envy's tiny weight meant that they barely left a mark on the marshy ground as they loped through what they could only assume was Cetus. They'd been seeking this room since the little bat- Pippy- had described it to them, but they'd never imagined it to be quite so soggy, or wet. Envy raised their head as high as they could, struggling not to splash muck on themselves when they raised their paws. With the lights on though, they could see rather well what was to come, and it wasn't long before Envy changed course in pursuit of a figure looming out of the fog.

The faint crackling of magic hurried them on; if there was one thing Envy couldn'rt resist, it was the chance to learn something new. And, although they'd never in a million years admit it, the silence was choking to them, the novelty of being alone wearing thin.

As the shadow in the fog grew rapidly larger, Envy finally slowed to a walk, their head held low in the mist. A strange look- half frown, half bemusement- crossed their face as they recognized the stranger in question. Well... in this situation, Envy was probably going to be more of a stranger here. They'd changed a lot since their last meeting with Amras. It showed in their stance, their expression, and in the way they walked. their body had matured, growing thinner, their bones sticking out under skin pulled taut. The last time they'd eaten had been two cycles ago. but they held themselves with confidence, their chest puffed out and head raising itself high with the recognition. They bared little white fangs in a greeting, fur bristling along their spine.

They tried to exude a sense of cool control- someone who knew they had it all despite their diminutive stature.

"Amras?" they called as they approached the - to them - giant creature, just to make sure they had it right. "What are you doing here?"

"Speech."

@Amras

Amras took another deep breath as he closed his eyes once more and placed his two talons on the ground. The area had been clear with the last attempt and fatigue hadn't set in so there was no need to hesitate to try again. He now knew a bit more of what to expect, a bit more of how his natural magic interacted with the land below. It was similar to the internal elements in some ways, but worlds apart in others. If water, arcane, primal, and air were like holding a conversation with different gembounds then this earth element was like trying to hold a conversation with one who spoke the sea tongue.

The glow shone out again as Amras poured energy into the ground. A couple seconds passed as he knew a bit more what to look for but hadn't quite mastered it yet and...

The transparent white glow in the ground around him shifted all at once to brown energy, just as the gryphon heard his name being called. His eyes opened wide but it was too late, if he let go of the spell and allowed it to manifest who knew what would happen? Keeping hold of the energy and focusing as much of his attention as possible on its stability Amras swept his right talon back, pulling the glow with it until it manifested behind him as a smooth obsidian ramp supported by spires extending three meters into the air and three meters back.

The gryphon staggered slightly as the fatigue of the spell hit him in a wave unlike any element he had stumbled upon before. The earth answered his request, but it demanded a price in return. With practice perhaps he would be able to overcome that, but for now he felt like he'd been standing still against the wind for an hour.

"Envy." he finally replied as soon as his head stopped spinning. "I wasn't expecting to see you here!" or anyone else for that matter.

The gryphon looked up and let himself drop into a laying position, as though he were fully intending to be on eye-level rather than happy to be resting after that. "Magic practice as always. Are you all the way out here by yourself?"

Envy jumped back in stunned shock as spires of pitch-black crystal erupted from the ground behind of the gryphon, enormous spires towering over the small creature. Energy surged through the excited weasel, resulting in a few moments of thrashing war-dance as they came to terms with whatever had just happened. Magic, obviously, but what kind of magic? Whatever it was, Envy wanted it, and wanted it badly.

"Hmph," they forced out, holding their paws still, although their tail still managed to twitch wildly. "Or I you."

But they forced themselves to stand still, clearing their throat and using a paw to smooth the bristling fur along their back. Their eyes narrowed at Amras and they tried their hardest not to look eager, or surprised. Seemingly appreciative, the weasel bounded over to the crystal spires- which didn't look like they'd be too difficult to scale- and scuttled up their sloping length. "Magic practice?" came the shrill question, unable to resist sounding at least a teensy bit eager. A tiny head poked out to peer at Amras through a gap in between two spires. Whatever it was Amras had done, it clearly made a fantastic climbing frame. "...What a coincidence! That's... totally what I'm doing here as well!" Envy's barely-contained excitement made for probably the least-convincing performance of their life, but Envy forced the grin from their eyes and tried to look calm, casual, and cool. They puffed out their chest and bristled visibly, the puffed-out fur managing to just hide their visible malnourishment.

"Yup! Just me and my magic!" Envy sucked in their breath and prepared to give Amras a demonstration of just how much they'd learned. They'd come a long way since they'd last seen Amras, and Envy was desperate to show him that they were no longer the sick, weak little creature they'd been back then.

Envy felt the fizzle of magic through their fur and watched the exhausted Amras closely, a broad grin baring sharp little teeth. Their fur flushed at first in royal shades of purple, before rippling in shades of blue. Envy closed their eyes and focused hard, finally settling on a colour scheme that aimed to mimic Amras' own. Deep blue, with an orange muzzle and forelimbs. They grinned and looked at the gryphon expectantly, smugness written all over their face.

"Speech."

@Amras

Even as the toll of earth magic weighed heavy on Amras he could see a life in the tiny little weasel never seen before. Well, perhaps tiny and little weren't quite the right descriptors anymore. While Envy was indeed still small in comparison to him, most creatures of the cave were. They appeared to have grown quite a bit since last meeting and with that growth a new kind of confidence- and energy judging on their movements!

The gryphon let out a soft chuckle, both in happiness at seeing the former distressed youth in good health and at Envy's apparent continued interest in the art of magic. From the sound of it this had probably originally been an exploration of either curiosity or some secret escape from their mother's watchful eye, but at their age either would be perfectly fine.

As Envy took a moment to prepare their spell from within the summoned frame Amras had a moment to examine the form his spell had taken. The obsidian slide seemed quite out of place in a marsh such as this, but despite being mostly bereft of function it would probably stand as a testament to his success for a cycle or two before sinking into the marsh once more. The first of many to come, just as the orb that rested within his door frame was a symbol of his earliest attempts at magic.

The gryphon snapped back to attention as he saw a flash of purple upon the weasel within the playset, followed by a very familiar shade of blue. Brows raised in a grin and then a full laugh as Envy's muzzle and forelimbs took on an orange hue as well. Though fatigue was still set in his limbs any mental fatigue felt like it instantly washed away from the sight.

"You've gotten even better!" he commented boisterously, hoping his genuine smile conveyed his amusement rather than sending signals of ridicule. "You definitely have a talent for primal magic; last time I tried it I ended up just puffing all my feathers out."

Envy grinned, their pride swelling to new heights and they started to climb higher up the obsidian object, until they were looking down at Amras with eyes sparkling in glee, the last traces of blue fading from their fur. "Of course I've gotten better!" they said, as though surprised. Their voice was high with indignance, but they kept it levelly cool and confident. Envy found another spot at the crotch of two spires, from which they could relax and peer down at Amras. "And one day, I'm gonna be the best." They seemed to relax, bristling fur lying flat as they curled, relaxed despite their precarious position on the obsidian object.

this new 'toy' was much easier to climb than the icy wall Asimona had created; and however much they hated thinking back to that, they had to admit it made climbing everything else feel so much easier.

The weasel then had another idea; if Amras was that impressed just by the colour change, how impressed would he be if Envy suddenly sprouted wings!? The long-bodied creature perked up, a shudder of excitement running down their spine. they raised their chin, looking coolly down at Amras from where they coiled. They glanced away, feigning disinterest for a moment, before scoffing quietly. "If you thought that was cool, just wait 'till you see this!" Envy hopped fully into the spot they'd found and raised themselves up high, puffing out their chest.

Cool, right?

Their gaze flitted briefly back to Amras to see if he was impressed by their little show. But now it was time for the main event! Once again, they felt magic surging through their chest, causing their fur to prickle, their gem tingling against their tongue. It took a few moments for the magic to manifest, but it eventually did, two semi-transparent bat wings forming an arc above Envy's head from their shoulders, each one longer than Envy's tiny body. The weasel folded their paws against their chest and looked grandly down their nose at Amras.

"Speech."

@Amras

With Envy perched high up Amras allowed himself to raise from the ground once more, still sitting and looking upwards at the small weasel but no longer resting on the cold soil. The character change in the youth continued to astound them, no longer pitiable but standing high with ambitions well beyond the simple search for life's comforts. They would be the best? Well given their talent born from need there was a chance that would be the case, but such a goal would not be without difficulties on its own.

No need to trouble them with such an observation right now though. As long as they were showing off there was little that Amras actually needed to do- and taking these few moments to catch his breath was just what he needed. He was feeling better already!

The next spell displayed, however, was not one he was expecting or very happy to see. Though he tried to hide his reaction behind neutral expression he could not fully cover his look of concern. Those wings were non-elemental, foreign, a power derived from some other being. The birds. He'd remembered hearing them above his home, with a voice that drowned out even the winds. He remembered the terms of their offer- a contest and a pledge of loyalty in exchange for power.

What had the poor weasel gotten itself into?

Of course it was possible that nothing bad would come of it. It was possible that the gryphon's gut instinct was wrong and the birds were not heralds of a war to come. If so then he may have certainly missed out on investigating a powerful creature's magic, but the risk had been much too high for him to act at that time. For one such as Envy, however, who was born into a hard life and sought greatness what risk was there? Amras could only hope that the gamble would pay off for them.

"Very impressive!" he finally said after a moment's pause. "You must have had to work hard to acquire that one."

Envy was a little bit taken aback by Amras' delayed reaction. Were they simply too stunned to respond? Had Envy over-introduced it? The weasel peered closely down at the gryphon, trying to discern whatever was going through the other's head, but drew a blank. The weasel's brow creased in frustration, and they bared their fangs a bit. What was that crossing their face? Was it anger? disappointment? concern? Envy squirmed with discomfort until the wings dissipated into mist.

Envy tried to look unconcerned and aloof, though they kept glancing back at the gryphon, expecting a congratulations or praise of their talents. Amras had recognized their talent before- so why wasn't he recognizing this?

The weasel's eyes grew hard in their confused face. They new exactly how they could peel the information they needed from Amras, even if it was only surface level. They'd used it before, and they could again. It seemed like Envy's feelings were doomed to be forever derived from the emotions of another- and thus far, they reveled in that ability. Leeching off of other's emotions filled them with a strange kind of elation- a disconnect from their woes and nausea- no matter who it was on the recieving end. There was still another part of them that longed to seek out Imperia for another taste of their power and glory. Magic would tell whether the gryphon was impressed- whether or not Amras was happy for them.

When Amras' words reached their ears, Envy hesitated, then dropped into focus anyway, their lilac gaze piercing as an arrow, boring into Amras' unreadable expression.

They felt the frustration and anger fading into the back of their mind, forgotten, the rest of the world between them dropping away. They felt concern, primarily. Envy got the impression that Amras thought that something was wrong with the magic Envy was so proud of. Very wrong. Envy tried to focus harder, finding that base emotions simply weren't enough to get them what they wanted- but either way, Amras was not impressed, and that made Envy's stomach tighten with rage. They felt their feelings tumbling back into their own, bringing with it doubts and fears and the desperate jealousy that Envy spent their life trying to suppress. Nausea tugged at the pit of their stomach, but it was as though all those emotions belonged to another being entirely. Envy hated feeling like themselves again.

"Of course I did," Envy muttered finally, and it felt as though there was something missing- the link between their mind and the words that seemed to come from the mouth of someone else. They felt it all coming back, all the things they desperately fought to suppress- and this time, there was no way they could keep it out of their eyes. Their stance folded in on itself, at loathe to return to their own emotions, so cripplingly dissonant with how everyone else felt. "I'm Envy. I have to work hard for everything, remember?"

The youngster lowered their gaze, seemingly upset and betrayed but, struggling to understand the alien feelings coiling around one another in their chest. Their expression was empty, showing nothing of the mess inside. There was a disconnect there, too.

But their eyes showed everything.

Envy had to stop this- every cast them left them loathing themselves even more, and ever more desperate for that feeling of fulfillment. And furthermore, if even emotion left them crashing into a pit of despair, how... weak did that make them? Envy started to bristle, showing something of their old selves again. "So, you don't like it, huh?" Envy forced a grin onto their face to replace the one that had been lost, hoping that Amras hadn't noticed their lapse too much. "Are you envious? I know I would be."

"Speech."

@Amras

Amras watched as the small weasel's face cycled from one emotion to another before falling to a more blank stare as though concentrating on something. They obviously hadn't taken his delay well, but even if he wanted to help fuel the youth's confidence in itself he couldn't shake the feeling that the move had been much too risky. Understandable, yes, but risky all the same.

Then Envy came back into focus they shook off the range of reactions as though nothing was wrong at all, presenting him with what he assumed to be an honest guess at how he had felt. The gryphon's face rose in an embarrassed grin as they further suggested that he may be envious of the skill.

It's not that I don't like it." he replied abashedly, "It may very well be that I am, as you say, envious of such a skill."

How to convey the nature of his reaction though? With an example perhaps? The gryphon's stone began to emit a soft glow as he placed his hand on his temple for a second, imagining a worker bee buzzing about with the sole purpose of finding flowers. As he formed the mental image the glow of his gem shifted to a shade of purple and when he removed his talon from his head an ethereal bee rested in his palm.

While I was still young an ancient gembound visited the cave and taught the inhabitants that cared to learn a few spells such as this. He gave this knowledge freely with no strings attached."

The bee buzzed upwards and began to circle the spires of the slide before hovering past and scanning the muddy ground as though for flowers.

When the three birds came they promised power in exchange for a pledge of loyalty and participation in some kind of contest. Those wings you possess seem like they would have originated from them."

His embarrassed expression faded to a smile as he looked between Envy and the bee. "I never sought them out. I was worried about the implications of such a condition. Your presence here proves that my gut fear was misplaced though- there is surely no war coming and they did not claim the pledged gembound as their own property and foot soldiers once the powers were given."

Envy frowned at Amras in response to their protests, slowly regaining their former connection to their former mindset. they shook their head, doubt at their own words setting in. "But... it felt... like you were upset. I... It didn't feel like envy. I'd know, wouldn't I?" A bitter grin crawled gradually over their face, and they gave a dry chuckle at their own 'joke'.

They listened to Amras' story, a lump growing in their throat as they spoke of spells that Envy might never learn. But, Envy found themselves relaxing, as well. They spoke of a situation similar to that which Envy had found. An ancient Gembound with long-forgotten magicks. Maybe Amras wasn't upset after all. Maybe they were envious. Perhaps envy was different to all who felt it. The weasel swallowed, watching in half-disguised wonder at the spectral bee that buzzed by. They raised a paw to try and bat at the 'creature'- if it could be called that- as it passed, but the bee was well out of their reach. They turned to Amras, eyes wanting.

"Can you teach me that?" they asked pleadingly.

As Amras spoke of the birds, Envy nodded slowly. "I know, I know! I was there. And yes, they gave me the wings. Get to the point," they snapped. Amras went on to acknowledge that their doubts seemed to be misplaced. The weasel's piercing look faded into one of slight relief, though they covered it up with a snort. "Of course they didn't. Even if they did, I belong to nobody. They can't take their magic back off of me. I won't let them even if they try!"

"Speech."
