Kin-Kin couldn’t remember the last time she felt so nervous; today was the day she learned that everything would soon be at stake. Her title, her pride, her reign; everything had a high possibility to soon end. And yet, as she prepared track markers for a different competition to distract herself, she couldn’t help thinking hard about the tricks she had up her sleeve. Would any of them be good enough? No. She doubted it.

Though her external guise was lighthearted, within was a storm of feeling, and there was one who Kin-Kin knew would notice. Not that she cared too much; Imperia had seen more of her than most would dare claim, and Imperia knew better than anyone that such a thing wasn’t to be taken lightly. At least, Kin-Kin hoped they did.

Although her heart wasn’t in the task, Kin-Kin felt a sigh of relief pass her lips as she felt the ground move beneath her touch, a small, milky gem forming in a crater between her forepaws. She pawed it out of its hole and looked around for more rocks; she needed a few of these before she’d feel even close to done.

@Imperia

It was weird being connected with Kin-kin the way Imperia was. They weren't sure they'd ever get used to knowing everything the wolf said and thought. It provided a lot of insight to her, though, and they couldn't help but wonder what else they didn't really know about her.

Some time had passed since they encountered the flower, and now found themselves in Polaris. Something had drawn her here, and she felt as though it were the emotions she could feel nearly rolling off in waves from Kin-kin. Something was coming up, and it seemed to make Kin-kin worry. They had heard rumors of another origin olympics coming up, and wondered if that was it. That was surely where she had gotten the title of hers, as they could recall her having won the magicka competition. So that was likely it.

After some time of walking, Kin-kin's glow made her presence known, and they walked up to her. It had been quite a while since they actually last saw her in person. They'd been exchanging thoughts and feelings for a while now, but hadn't actually met in person until now.

They sat down, watching as Kin-kin pawed what looked like a gem out of a hole. They flicked an ear before saying something, in case she hadn't noticed them approach in her task. "Hey."

Kin-Kin had been so invested, apparrently, on the creation of that lone gem, that she didn’t notice someone sitting beside her until they spoke. She flinched slightly, looking up with ears perking curiously, but as she saw it was only Imperia, she seemed to relax. She was so deep in thought, she barely considered the oddity that was the caracal’s physical appearance here. “Oh, hey,” she said with a lopsided grin, though her focus was noticeably elsewhere. Finding another patch of bare earth, the wolf once again let her magic flow.

But the wolf’s focus seemed to betray her; a shudder ran through the earth at her paws accompanied by the crackle of magic. The earth began to reform, creaking and groaning as it went. But then... as the pressure mounted, it seemed to become too much for the newly-forming Gemstone. With one final creak, it shattered into a spray of glasslike shards. “Fucking...” Kin-Kin hissed under her breath, as one piece clinked off her gem, and the rest tinkled to the ground at her paws. Finally, she raised her head and looked at Imperia, her face calm, but her psyche radiating tension.

“So... what brings you here?”

@imperia

Imperia grunted. They didn't say anything, not wanting to break Kin-kin's concentration on...whatever she was doing. They watched, trying to see what exactly she was doing. But as it seemed to fail, they frowned. It shattered, spraying little shards everywhere. As Kin-kin turned to them, their eyes narrowed.

While she looked calm, Imperia could still feel the feelings coming from her. They only seemed stronger when they were in such close proximity. "Something about you screamed desperation. Seems like I was right." They glanced toward the shards before looking back to Kin-kin. "What are you doing?"

It seemed that Imperia's appearance was going to be bittersweet. The wolf winced through her usual grin. "Well, I don't know if desperation is the right word, but..." the wolf brushed off any lingering shards of glasslike crystal with a soft shake of her body, and returned to the glowing crystal she'd made previously. Perhaps it would be best to stick with this one for now. Picking it up, she carried it to settle comfortably beside Imperia and continue her work there, laying the object carefully down on a patch of moss.

"Ya heard about the competition, right? Olympics or somethin'. Happened once back when we were kids," Kin-Kin explained briefly, sure that Imperia, like herself, had participated. It was strangely clear, despite her down-to-earth explanation, that there was more to it than that. Kin-Kin brushed her paw against the crystal, pouring some of her glow into it. "I won, last time. You remember, right? It made me who I am today, so... if I join up again this time, there's a lot at stake. Ya feel me?" She paused, watching the crystal gently pulse and twinkle with a bright white light. "...Not that I'm afraid. Obviously."

Melancholy eyes of piercing violet never raised to meet Imperia's, although her voice was level and calm.

"I'm makin' some track markers for... uh. the obstacle course. So peeps'll know where to go."

@Imperia

Imperia snorted, but said nothing. They continued to watch as Kin-kin explained, and flicked an ear. "Yeah, I've heard about it. And I remember it. And I also remember you winning. No surprise, you clearly knew more magic than anyone else there."

They watched as she made the gem glow. "Right. Really, you'll be fine. You've been doing magic for so long since then."

Their gaze flicked to the gem. "How kind. I'm sure everyone will appreciate it."

Kin-Kin grinned sideways at Imperia's words, the caracal's blunt demeanor hiding a subtle compliment that made Kin-Kin feel a little more like herself. "Heh-heh. That's strangely nice of you," Kin-Kin joked, flashing a wink in Imperia's direction, before returning her attention to the now-glowing gem. There was still one last step that would make this marker exactly how she wanted; the most complicated step. Saving the best until last.

"I suppose you're right. Still, others have had pretty long to buck up their act as well," the she-wolf said thoughtfully. "Still, you've got me thinkin' as of late. And I think I might have an idea in mind. It's a long shot but... well... If I can pull it off, it might just give me the edge."

She placed her paws apart and focused her power on the earth beneath her paws. Tendrils of clear quartz emerged from the ground, encasing the glowing crystal into an orb that refracted the light into rainbows. The crystal reformed and knitted together into a somewhat smooth, but slightly faceted surface. When the reforming had finished, Kin-Kin took it in her teeth, and pulled it out of the earth. Beneath the orb, fragmenting and intensifying the light source beneath, was a spike meant for driving the marker into the earth wherever guidance was needed. "There! Whaddaya think?" This one was a little crude, but Kin-Kin thought it'd work well. By means of demonstration, Kin-Kin stuck it upright into a nearby patch of earth. She glanced at Imperia for any sign of feedback, then backed away herself to admire her handiwork.

Imperia chuckled. "I can be nice. I just don't make a habit of it." They blinked as Kin-kin continued talking, and narrowed their eyes slightly. "What's this idea of yours?" They fell silent as they watched her cast her magic, watching as the tendrils emerged and covered the gem. "Not bad. I'm sure it'll work fine."

They studied it for a moment after Kin-kin had stuck it in the earth. The spell didn't seem to have worked exactly the way she wanted it to, as it did look a little crude - but it would definitely do the job.

"Heh-heh... don't I know it," Kin-Kin muttered thoughtfully in response to Imperia's words, seemingly amused despite her thoughtfulness.

As Imperia questioned her idea, Kin-Kin grinned. She never could resist the opportunity to try out new spells.
"Well, it comes from your questions on my sword. "Doesn't carrying it get tiresome", "Isn't it a bother to lug around?" that kinda deal. And... If I remember correctly..." Kin-Kin paused, turning her gaze towards her sheathed sword. She unsheathed it, carefully placing it on the ground in front of her. "there might be something I can do about it."

She let out a hum of concentration and sat back, narrowing her eyes as she stared at the object as though she'd never seen the thing before in her life. She felt her glow dimming, and power reaching from within her. after a long, long pause, Kin-Kin watched the sword tremble, and then lift off the ground. Its movement was imprecise and difficult to control- like trying to control a wrecking ball with a piece of string- but Kin-Kin let it hover for a while before glancing at Imperia for her reaction. As she broke eye contact, the object dropped harmlessly to the ground.

Kin-Kin needed practice, and she thought that it was pretty much useless to her if it relied so much on eye contact... but it was something. And it would work for what she had in mind. Very well, in fact. The wolf felt a spark of hope flare up in her chest, and she puffed out her fur. "If you wanna know what I'm gonna use it for... well... You'll just have to come see me at the competition, won't you? I can't spoil all the surprises." she winked.

@Imperia

Imperia listened as Kin-kin spoke, their eyes narrowing. They didn't say anything, and only watched as she sat back and stared at her sword. At first, they weren't sure what was going to happen. Until the sword shifted. Zeroing her gaze on it, they watched as Kin-kin lifted the sword around without even touching it. Before they could do anything about it, a look of surprise and amazement crossed their face. They let it linger for a moment before changing expressions to what it was before.

"That's...certainly an interesting spell. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it...With a spell like that, you're sure to keep your title." As Kin-kin spoke again, they snorted. "Alright, maybe I will. I don't plan on participating this time, but I can certainly watch," they chuckled lightly.
