ORIGIN - Flutter by, Butterfly

She could hear the fear in the preyscent's voice slowly fading away at her words. As her tongue flicked out, the snake smelled the prey staying in one spot as their trail faded. Satisfied that the little creature was not going to attempt to run away again, she coiled up, lowering her head to the most comfortable position.

"You are very small. Why are you small?" Although the snake had no particular sense of curiosity, she felt the want to inquire about this. From where she could feel and what she could control, she knew she was much, much longer than the little preyscent.

The newborn flinched as the shape of the serpent moved, cowering into his chrysalis until the movement, and the sounds of scales rustling together, had come to a halt. When he peered out, the snake's new position caused it to look smaller, and seemed less threatening to the little catermouse. They spoke again, and the words lingered for a while in the young one's brain, taking shape to form understanding. Why was he small?

Why am I small?

Curiosity. The little one didn't know. He couldn't explain it any more than he could explain why they were so big. Could they? "Why are you so big?" he asked honestly, wondering if their answer to this, would give him the answer to his own questions. The rest of the world was a blurry haze of greens and yellows and bright, sweet-smelling blooms. There was so much that it was almost too much. Just how big could this world be?

The young snake paused for a moment, thinking the question through. She was this big when she woke up inside her prison, wasn't she? So, by extension..

"Woke up big." she responded. Was it the same for the tiny preyscent? She pitied the little thing, then. Being so tiny and slow, unable to defend itself from being snapped up by anything wanting to eat it. She supposed its size would be useful- like her, maybe other creatures wouldn't want to eat such a tiny thing.

The little catermouse stared for a moment. Woke up big? He knew that, they'd watched, after all! He let out a tiny chitter that might have been a giggle. "Well... woke up small!" he responded, after a while. He found that he'd rose up a little bit, moving out of his safe spot amongst the ruins of his chrysalis- but also, that it didn't seem quite so safe any more.

The little one dragged himself out from its confines a little bit, moving, against the instinctual fear, towards the looming shape against the instinctual fear in his heart. Curiosity had become overpowering, and far more alluring. He inched closer, until he could make out the other gembound's slick scales and was on the ground right before them. "Who are you?" the little catermouse asked then.

"Speech looks like this."
"Thoughts look like this."

The snake turned their head, smelling the preyscent moving closer. She lowered her head to the ground next to where she thought the tiny creature was, more than likely giving him a close look at her blind apatite eyes. "I am.. Wrath." That seemed like a good enough name, anyways. It fit, somehow, like the name was intended just for her.

The little catermouse's ears twitched slightly. "Wrath?" the little one couldn't help but shiver slightly, the name bringing back a thrill of the fear that had sent him cowering In his chrysalis. He thought he understood that word, kind-of. And it was a scary word. When he spoke again, his voice was small. "Why Wrath?"

The catermouse peered at the serpentine shape. He thought hard, nose wrinkling in thought. "I think I'm..." He thought hard, and a word came to his tongue- whose meaning he knew, although he failed to recognize the irony. "Flit."
