Envy was hurrying through tunnel N, their body all aquiver with anticipation. They barely stopped to wait for Pride despite knowing of the deer's inhibitions, frequently founding themselves pacing forward and back instead of waiting. Why did everything else move so slow!? Envy felt like the world had positively slowed down around them, their excitement speeding them up tenfold, their heart hammering in their chest. They were energized at the thought of their coming kinghood.

At the end of today, they would truly be a king with Pride at their side.

They could hardly wait. It was almost too much for them to bear. So to pass the time, the weasel went over the plan in their head, again and again. They'd practiced the magic a thousand times and they knew that it was possible. They would first create an illusion of one of the goose's kids, the quiet one, probably. That way it wouldn't be unusual for them to not have to use their voice; they hadn't yet uncovered a magical way of changing their voice to match. Then they'd lead Pride in, as though to introduce him to 'mother'. Maybe Envy could even disguise Pride? The quiet one was... kind of deer-shaped, after all. Surrounding another with illusion wasn't something they'd ever tried before. But it might be possible. But they thought that the goose might notice; after all, they were certain that Pride was a little taller than the silly-looking hybrid. And his voice was... at least a little more matched, nothing like Envy's shrill, piping tone.

Chest heaving quickly, Envy turned once again to wait for Pride, and decided to finally summon the illusion that could make or break their mission. But it seemed that they were too worked up, the magic slipping from their quaking grasp. They sucked in their breath and tried again.

The failure didn't much help with Envy's nervousness. Buzzing and twitching, the little creature tried again to summon their magic. This time, Envy's efforts were met with a shimmering veil of success. Envy tugged at the strings of the light in the cave and like a craftsman working with clay, was able to come up with a convincing decoy of the goose-headed-deer-thing. The fur along the little one's spine rose in sheer excitement but as their concentration wavered, the illusion did too. They'd need to keep focus.

Envy took a moment to admire their handiwork, pacing around the illusion -probably the best they'd made- grinning and nodding. Maybe a few things were off- they couldn't quite remember where its gem was, and maybe a couple of colours were weird, but it was pretty close. Certainly the creature they could picture in their mind's eye.

With a tug at their magic, they made the illusion wave its head. They couldn't help but snicker at how ridiculous it looked.

Okay, that was step 1. Now they needed Pride. The nest was close. They just had to cover the last bit of ground and show themselves to the bloodthirsty family.

Pride watched Envy doubtfully as he came up behind them, shaking his fur out and exhaling. He was larger now, his antlers more branched, with several thick tines. He still, however, was not a full-grown stag--he was slender, delicately pale, and still growing. Worse still, his eyesight had not improved in the slightest; he still saw everything through a thick blur of a haze, as if ice had frosted over the world.

It was a bad omen, and he gave a soft huff of worry.

"Are you certain the ones we are to impersonate aren't... here?" he asked again. He didn't like this plan. It left too much to chance, and if there was a failure, it could end very, very badly. They were walking into a situation where they were outnumbered.

"I very much dislike this plan. I will listen if you insist on it, but again, I do not like it." His voice was still quietly musical, but hushed, just in case any of these others were still lurking nearby. "I have said I only need to see the fur. You said the goose is wearing it, so we only need to hide, and wait for it to pass, and I can take it from afar. It never needs to know we're there. I find this entire thing... unnecessarily risky," he finished, tone thick with reluctance.

He glanced ahead, then to Envy once more, again softly snorting.

"I urge you to reconsider this approach."

@Envy
Envy glanced back at Pride, relieved as the stag finally caught up, but that still didn’t stop their erratic twitches. "Of course, I made sure of that!" they tittered impatiently. "It left just before I went to find you. If we’re quick it won’t be back. Besides, we’re only gonna be impersonating one of them."

Pride’s reluctance wasn’t helping. This was the best shot they had, and they didn’t think there weren’t many other options. They shook their head to clear their thoughts. "This tunnel is pretty narrow, there aren’t many places to hide. Besides, I haven’t seen the stupid thing leave the nest."

Envy hoped that meant it had been injured, or... something. "Besides, you’ve gotta see it for your part to work, right? So from afar would be even harder. My job is to get you in close."

Envy used magic to shift the illusion of Elderberry so that it hid Pride’s pale form. After stepping back to admire their handiwork, the little weasel chuckled with glee. They were getting good at this!

Then, the little one scampered up to one of Pride’s legs and started to clamber up onto the white deer’s shoulders, hiding in amongst the nonexistent feathers nestled there. The pair was good to go.

"Let’s go. If you need a bail, I’ve got you covered!" They snorted softly at the mostly-unintentional pun.

Pride looked himself over, brow faintly knitted together.

"The problem, Envy," he responded quietly, "is that I will not run. I will fight whoever is there if they attack and if this happens, and we fail, it will be on your head." He felt sullent, reluctant, and he let the irritated threat loom in the air. If Envy pushed this and it went wrong, well, he'd find someone else to be "king."

He had to admit, though, even through his reluctance, that yes--he would need to get in close. He just could not understand why they couldn't only lure the goose out.

Really, someone should kill the thing, and whichever of its brood were equally violent. These things are a danger, and shouldn't be left to harm others. Sadistic beast.

@Envy
Crouched on the stag's back, Envy gritted their teeth slightly at that. "My head?" they asked, the weight of the implication settling in. They shuddered minutely, but banished any lingering nerves with a shake of their head. "It'll be fine, you'll see. Besides, you said you needed to get closer to the bird! Not that you needed me to bring it to you!" Envy twined a paw through the fur they were perched on, their voice high with indignance and mostly-disguised apprehension. This was the first time they'd tried anything like this.

Envy adjusted their magic to align with Pride's movements- keeping the white stag covered- and peered down the tunnel. They needed to get moving soon, before the spell wore off. "Let's go!" they repeated, a little bit louder, pressing themselves close to Pride's back and gesturing ahead- even if they knew they couldn't be seen. "The nest is just ahead."

Their tail whipped nervously against the deer's hide, but they tried to squash any other movements that might give away their presence- but that was easier said than done. They kept weaving their paws into the deer's fur, instead. They were his king, after all; so they didn't think Pride should protest. The sensation helped.

Pride considered. He was hardly a coward, but nor was he a fool, and everything about this rang "idiotic" in his mind. To walk right into their nest, and--did Envy even know how many there were?

"Tell me this much, at least," he said with a sigh. "How many of them are there?" If they were outnumbered, he'd call it here. There was no point in risking everything, in possibly making things worse, with something so ill-thought-out.

He shifted his gaze to try and see Envy on his back, but all he could see was the shimmer of their magic. That alone was impressive, but it didn't change the fact that should the idiot goose's entire pack of madmen be in there, and speak to them, they could not answer. And should the illusion fall--well.

@Envy
Envy paused at the question that was posed, hesitation showing on their face, although it couldn't be seen. "I infiltrated a meeting. There were five present, but most only came when called. It seemed that the goose is the only one always there," Envy said with a lot of thought. Saying it out loud made it feel a lot more calamitous, and they doubted that Pride would agree. They felt irritation prickling along their spine. Pride had asked them for a way to get in close! And that's what they'd done. "Do you have a better idea?"

Perhaps Envy could create an illusion to act as a diversion? Perhaps a figure of Pride that wasn't a real thing that could waltz in and cause a stir?

Have it lead the goose out to the real pride? But that would still involve Envy getting into somewhere they could play the puppetmaster. And the moment the illusion was revealed as a hoax, the whole lot of them would be out for Envy's blood. Envy knew that Pride, too, had the ability to create such figments, at least of himself. Maybe they needed to think about it more. But Envy didn't want to think about it more! They were on edge enough as it is!

The weasel let the illusion fade into a pale mist of light, plunging the surrounding tunnel into relative darkness.

Pride thought about this question for a moment, though not too long--he didn't want to tax the weasel. Oh--but there went the magic, anyway; and Pride took a moment longer, mulling his thoughts over.

He knew he had very little experience in these things. He didn't know what would work, and what wouldn't, but it seemed to him to be a foolish risk to put themselves into a situation where they'd be potentially surrounded by enemies if something went wrong.

For a moment, too, he considered the same thing Envy did: a distraction. But even then, putting the asshole goose on alert without actually needing to seemed... well. Unwise.

The way he saw it, they could play the waiting game: they could lie in the darkness and watch the goose and its "family" (he sincerely doubted, given her vicious madness, that she had anything resembling a true family)--and then pounce once they found her alone.

But that could take days, and anyway, it left them open to accidental discovery by a group of them, which would land them in the same situation as before.

They could try to call her out--by name, and quietly--without alarming her? He wasn't sure the goose knew Envy's voice. And if the weasel could make them invisible, Pride had a good chance of doing what he wanted, without her ever seeing them. There was still the risk that she might haul her whole family out, but at least this way they could hide somewhere first--on a ledge, perhaps--somewhere they could flee.

That seemed, after some consideration, to be the best idea he could come up with.

"If we can find someplace near the den to hide, somewhere we can retreat from without being cut off, but somewhere that overlooks the tunnel--someplace high, and dark. You can make us invisible, and call out, and if she comes out, even if it is with family, I can do this. I think she would come even to a challenge, but merely calling her name might do it. It was Blackberry," he added, with a sneer; the name was so kind and delicate, so unlike the mind-damaged savagery the bird had displayed.

@Envy
Even though it didn't take too long for Pride to reply, Envy was already twitching an impatient jig by the time the answer came. "I mean... if you can find a ledge big enough, let's do it. But this is a narrow tunnel, so I don't know." From Envy's voice, it was clear they had their doubts about this plan. But they were too eager to get moving to turn it down. "And... I dunno about invisibility. Wouldn't be a problem for me, obviously, but I don't know if I could extend it to you. I can make you look just like a cluster of rocks, though. Same principle as before. And not as hard, if you don't move."

They thought for a moment, wondering if illusion would lend the power to cover Pride... maybe just change him to look like his surroundings? Or somehow bend the light around? Envy didn't know enough about the principles of light magic to make an educated guess. They shook their head.

"Okay, okay. We're not far away from the nest. If I just get a little closer she'll hear us no problem How about we hunker down somewhere around here?" Envy looked around with a quick turn of their head before scrambling down one of the deer's foreleg like a little snake. They sat up on their hind paws and looked around the curve of the tunnel. Against the tunnel wall Envy summoned a hazy white mist, which quickly took shape into the same tunnel wall- just a little further forward than what It had been. Envy bounded over and disappeared- a moment later, they popped out, apparently darting through solid rock.

"How's that? if I keep it up. they'll never even know you're there."
