Giggle was not a stupid creature. She valued her own life, indeed. The first thing that she did was wait until the raptors had moved a bit on; the second was to scurry--low to the ground and tail tucked between her legs--back to the carrion-smelling red fungus.
There, she hesitated. Was it worth the risk? What if it all went wrong, again? She wasn't stupid and she valued her own life--as established. But she also valued knowledge, and following this beasts would surely bring it. The question was, was it worth it? Even if the spell worked and they decided not to eat her, they might kill her anyway for her pursuit.
But she was so curious... A knowledge-seeker such as herself simply couldn't live with letting them walk away without further investigation.
She tried to call her magic, but this time, rather than backfiring, simply nothing happened. She needed to recharge, she supposed--to rest. Thinking fast, she dashed back to the puddle, and rolled thoroughly in the mud. Maybe a thing that smelled like dirt wouldn't be so appetizing, either.
She didn't try to stop the raptors, no--but she did try to follow at a distance, as quietly as she could. She tried to keep them just at the edge of her vision for as long as she could, following the trail by scent when she lost sight--being exceedingly careful to use her nose, in case they realized she was following and doubled back to ambush her.
At least this way, if they attacked someone, or did something else of interest, she could help--or learn.
