Jayberry slept.
For the last few days, she hadn't left the chrysalises side. From what she knew, it was soon to hatch. It had grown a lot, and she could make out a shadow inside. Not enough to tell what would come out of it, but enough to know that it lived.
What would come out of it? Would most of it be her? Wolven? Or would it largely resemble the bird, useless except for a distraction?
A pang against her side woke her.
She jolted awake, leaping to her feet and looking at the Chrysalis as it began to move, cracks dancing along the stone. Backing away, she threw back her head and howled, summoning her family to greet their newest kin. Her family had grown, and she wished they would all show up. But the two she desperately wanted were Mother and Father. They were the ones she was closest to, and she desperately wanted them there when her child was born.
