Death be my dignity

Poison fills the cup of the carpenter

Naja waited.

He had all of the time in the world. So he remained in his spot, coiled in the shadows of a rock. His head rested atop his coils, tongue darting out every now and again.

Every now and again, an animal would walk by. A massive Cave Deer. An ignorant Greater Gembound. There was only one prey he was interested in, however - cave mice.

And so he waited patiently.

If one were able to see the snake, they might have thought he was dozing. He was entirely still, aside from the flickering of his tongue, and he didn't move for anything.

At least, until, a Cave Mouse crossed his path. Before it could blink, he lashed out, wrapping it in his coils and tightening around it, squeezing the breath out of the rodent.

Naja locked eyes with the struggling mouse, able to feel its heart thrumming against his scales. Its eyes seemed trapped by his, and it could do nothing but remain still as he lunged forward, sinking his fangs into its flesh and pumping his venom the motionless rodent.

The snake withdrew once he was satisfied with how much venom the mouse had received, observing it. It began to wriggle and writhe weakly in his grip, foam and spittle beginning to drip from its mouth.

And then, suddenly, it began to thrash uncontrollably, before going limp in his coils. Its hard stopped beating, and he leaned forward, tasting the air. Yes, it was most definitely dead. Well then. Unhinging his jaw, he swallowed the mouse whole.

The King Cobra, already beginning to digest the mouse, turned, and slithered back to his previous hiding place. There was no sign of the kill that had just taken place, so he worried none about merely coiling back up and waiting.

And it quickly paid off. Before long, another mouse came by and, like a scripted movie scene, he lunged out, wrapping around the mouse before it could think of escaping.
