Huckleberry widened his eyes a little sadly as Cloudberry appeared. She was so young to him still and he didn't want her here. But if he dared try to send her home or even talk to her at such a time, he knew that Mama would never forgive him. He knew that that would be the end. He had to keep his mouth shut and deal with it, however much it hurt.

He didn't want to fight. He didn't like fighting, except to show off his magic. But this wasn't a time to show off. They were attacking someone completely innocent for no reason other then that they could. He remembered the last time they had ganged up on someone - it had been a raven and it hadn't gone so well, the bird's powerful magic wounding many of them severely.

His heart was racing and he tried to control his breathing, but it wasn't so easy without Shiny on his shoulders. Eventually he gave up and let the panic and fear fill his body. Perhaps it would give him the strength to do this. He had two options now, though - fight with the family or once again let himself become labeled a traitor. He knew what his answer was.

As Blackberry screeched for her family to attack, Huckleberry burst out from the bushes, his heart finally set on something. He wanted to make his family proud. All thoughts of perhaps leaving the family, abandoning them to live on his own, they were gone. He was focused now - focused on being a Bloodberry, what he had been raise to be.

As he burst through the edge of the trees, he glanced up and saw the cat on top of the roots of the massive tree shaking wildly. They weren't going to be able to kill him if he was up there so the hybrid leaped forward, crouched with his front legs, and as his back legs kicked strongly at the ground, he jumped and spread his wings, shooting towards the cat like a bullet, intending on using his momentum on knocking the cat to the ground.

It worked. He rammed right into Rift's chest, grabbing at the feline with his claws, and sending both of them tumbling to the ground, smashing through the well-tended plants of the garden. He cried out in pain as he banged against root and rock, but it was worth it - he had grounded the cougar for the others to attack.

The air was wrong, today. It was rife with the stench of blood and gore. Silent. Too silent. The leaves barely stirred in nonexistent breezes. As Pride left the den, Mercurius murmured softly, "be careful." Something wasn't right. Nature was quivering fearfully, and it was not in the face of another fire. The children were frolicking about the garden, bleating happily and eagerly.

As Mischief abruptly jerked to attention, the wanderer's head whipped towards her. The hare came forth, scratching a drawing into the earth before running out of the garden. Mercurius peered down at it for a moment, heart thrumming. "We must be quiet, little ones," the lion called to his sons, carefully and with every bit of calmness he could muster. As if war wasn't about to burst out. "Stay in the garden, with one another. Something is happening, and I do not know what."

With that, the pale beast licked the top of each Star's head before mustering up a shot of magicka. With a little bit of luck, all of the flora that had separated the grove from the rest of Eridanus would swell up further, forming a nearly impenetrable dome of vines and brambles. Mercurius paced over to a tree, willing his arthritic joints to action. Claws unsheathing, the lion scooted his way up the tree, careful to not make a single sound and to simply watch and guard.

He hoped that Pride was alright.

Eridanus was typically a throng of bustling creatures and energy. On any given day the cavern was alive with various critters talking, moving, being. It could perhaps be considered the most alive of the caverns as nature of a variety overflowed there. But that was on a typical day.

And this was not a typical day.

The forest was eerily silent. Like for the lesser gembounds, this put the springbok at ill ease. She knew something was coming. Something big. Last time Enka had flung herself into the midst of danger while flames surrounded her. Even now, three cycles later, the smell of smoke caused her stomach to clench and threaten retching. And all for naught, as she had nearly died and much of the forest had fallen.

This time, instinct told her to stay away and stay away she had planned indeed to accomplish. There was no point in putting one’s life in danger again for a cause that was doomed. It was nearly a miracle she had survived the last time. Her rump twitched and tail flicked as she moved away, the unease causing her to be on edge and fidgety.

Then the forest suddenly rang out. In a flash the antelope’s head snapped around to see its source. In the distance a rather large tree quivered with enough intensity to appear as though caught in its own tornado despite no evidence of wind. It was a strange sight. For a moment she simply watched, trying to assess if it had anything to do with the silence of the forest.

Her stomach clenched and her heart plummeted as she realized where the tree stood at. How did she not recognize it immediately? It had been cycles since she last saw the cougar. How many had it been? Far too long, that much was for certain. At least not since the fire, as failing to save the lives of so many plant children had caused her to feel too ashamed to see her mentor again. It was his tree, his home, that shook so urgently. That, along with the silence, was not a good sign.

Hooves locked into the mossy earth below her as she stood frozen in place. Wide brown eyes stared at the tree while her mind raced. It was clearly a dangerous situation. What could she possibly do to help? She couldn’t even save the young plants? What business did she have answering the call?

But this was her mentor. And it was clearly an emergency. Rift was strong and capable; he would not cry out for help unless he needed it.

Without realizing it, she had sprung forward and was racing towards the tree. Her eyes stung as tears welled up. She would never forgive herself if Rift fell while she played it safe. She had horns and hooves, teeth and earth. She would do what she could, even if it was just to help him run away. She could not fail this time.

Within a few short moments, she arrived to a mad scene of bodies rushing forward. They had already begun. A multitude of creatures she didn’t recognize (though one dark form did look vaguely familiar), had appeared. One of which was falling from the tree, the cougar held tight in its grip. She reared up, kicking her front hooves. “Noooo!” she cried out; a mixture of fear, pain, and anger ringing out as the word lingered on her tongue.

Notes: Oh boy, let's see how this goes. XD

Brother, understand why
See it's burning me to hold onto this
I know this is something that I gotta do
But that don't mean I want to

Sebastian dreaded.

He had destroyed his Brother's beloved forest - his Brother's home. And they had not spoken in cycles. Long enough for his wounds to heal, to scar. For fur to grow over his scars, for his scars to stop constantly hurting. But he feared seeing his Brother, feared doing something wrong.

And so he lagged as he made his way to his Brother's garden, following the deer-paths. His head was low, his stride a stalk, but he walked.

At least, until he heard his Brother's cry for help. It would be impossible to miss the shaking tree, waving wildly. Panic shot through him, his heart thundering in his ears. He shoved off the ground, leaped into the trees, and raced towards the Great Tree.

And was horrified by what he saw. There were a great many beasts - friends and foe alike - gathered around his Brother's tree. He barreled into eye-line just in time to see the hybrid take his brother off of the tree, a strangled cry building in his throat, cutting short as Enka rammed into the hybrid. She could do this, he knew.

He had never met Blackberry, had never seen her. But he had heard of her through Rift, and so set his sights on her. With a screaming roar that only a cougar could manage, he leaped from the tree, claws extended and teeth bared, aiming to land on Blackberry with as much of his weight as he could. If they didn't put an end to this soon, it would be a bloodbath.

@Blackberry

"Speech looks like this."
Thoughts look like this.

What I'm trying to say is that, I love you I just
I feel like this is coming to an end
And it's better for me to let it go now,
than hold on and hurt you
I've gotta let it burn

The others arrived, one by one, and Yewberry ignored them. But, oooh, she couldn't wait to see how Acaiberry would be punished. If she had been thrashed by Mother for missing their meetings, she couldn't imagine what would happen for missing an all out war.

And then The Goose was screaming - a harsh sound that tore at her ears and made her want to tear out the Goose's throat, but then she was on her paws and moving, racing towards the fight. Huckleberry tore the cat from the tree, and was quickly pounced on by a deer. Well, that just wouldn't do, would it?

She dug in her paws, before charging towards the deer. The wolfingbird aimed her beak forward, attempting to ram it into Enka's side.

@Enka

The little magpie-mix was no monster in size, but she was big enough, she thought, to fight. Looking at it, Rift seemed smaller than she'd thought. Mother had made him out to be a monster, and she'd pictured something huge, something stepping tall as the trees with the silence of a whispered breath of wind. Something with claws like boulders, and eyes like cave-orbs.

This-... This was just a cat, draped in foliage. And there! Another one, black, leaping for Mother.

Cloudberry wasn't sure about this fight--wasn't sure about a lot of things--but she certainly feared her mother's death. She didn't want Blackberry to die, and with a loud cry--like a discordant melody, a single musical but off-key note--she leapt for the black cat.

She wasn't sure what she could do, but she knew how Mother fought, and she went for it. Little claws--not talons by any means--scratched for Sebastian as she flapped toward him, trying to cling, to bite at him with blunted teeth.

Cloudberry never even reached her target; instead her wings took her up, her limbs lashing for the black cat only to have her overshoot, hurtling into a tree with a cry of pain. That-... had not done her proud, she knew, in the eyes of her family. And it would take her a few moments to get back on her feet, and shake away this stunned, dizzying feeling.

Jayberry would be the first to admit that she was stunned that Yewberry had actually showed her face. You could have blown her over with a single one of her daughter's feathers. Even with the thrashing she'd given the pup, she hadn't truly expected her to show up. But she had, and that counted for something.

Huckleberry - and that was a surprise, too - Elderberry, and Cloudberry appeared as well, before Mother screeched their charge. Jayberry threw her head back, and howled, before launching herself forward to barrel forward, charging towards the tree. The cat was out of reach, but that didn't keep her from leaping up, teeth clicking shut on air, attempting to pull him down - although Huckleberry (props to them! she thought) was quick to bring him down.

Her daughter, to her surprise and glee, joined the fight, jumping to protect Huckleberry, and she gave a short bay.

And then - a familiar voice. 'Oliver?' she whirled, facing the black bird-dog. 'Oh, no.' her lips curled to bare her teeth, but then she licked her lips nervously. He had helped to save her life - she owed him that much. "I'm alright, but you need to get out of here. Mother is getting revenge, we're helping her. I don't want to hurt you, but I will if I must." her voice was hushed, low, and she was hyper-aware of the fighting going on around her.

@Oliver

"She speaks." 'She thinks.' She does.

The battlefield soon fell into chaos, the clearing soon filled with thrashing bodies of kith and combatant, kin and competitor. Elderberry advanced, tilting back his head in a bellowing honk. His head gazed around atop its long neck and he took the time to focus, to examine what was going on. With all others already engaged, he would need to search hard find an opponent of his own; and it would be an honourable fight, truly a sight to behold.

The moose-goose moved ahead, as he spotted a low-hanging mist seeping into the clearing from further into the forest. He pressed into the fog, feathers puffing out as he searched the whiteness for a worthy foe. He trotted ahead, determined to find whomever was making this mist; if there was anyone there at all. Perhaps it was simply a property of the rainforest...

But either way, Elderberry was certain that the mist would aid any stragglers.

On his watch, at least, the cat's forces would be unable to use it for an ambush.

His ears twitched; the hybrid paused and peered. But alas, it seemed that there was no-one there. He heard a rustle as some small creature fled, but that was it. "If anyone hides in the mist," he rumbled, ears twitching around. "Step forth and face me in honourable combat."

I will make Mother proud.

"When I speak."

When I think.

Blackberry watched with bloodthirsty approval as Huckleberry dragged the cat right off of his tree. It had been a good idea, after all, to keep her child around. The clearing was quickly descending into chaos with more combatants showing up. She hissed. She had prepared for Rift having allies but she still didn't like that their battle had been interrupted. This would make it harder to destroy the cat now.

At least he was on the ground now and she advanced forward to start teaming up on him with her son. But then something slammed in to her side and she honked with surprise as she tumbled to the ground. She looked over to see another cat, similar in appearance to Rift, but covered with jet black fur. She hissed with frustration as her path was stopped. "Out of the way, cat! I have some unfinished business to get to!" She turned her sharp, hooked beak and thrust her head forward, aiming for his right eye, trying to stab it right into his skull. Perhaps to blind him or at least hurt him enough to get him to get off of her.

Battle Report

Huckleberry has successfully dragged Rift out of his tree.
Pride has created a mist cover and Elderberry is searching for him.
Jayberry has hesitated to join the battle at Oliver's arrival, reluctant to fight him.
Yewberry is attacking Enka, who hasn't yet joined the fighting.
Sebastian has tackled Blackberry and Cloudberry has failed to stop him.

The tree continued to shake as Rift kept his claws in the bark of the tree. However, it wasn't going to last for long. He just managed to see the arrival of Enka, Sebastian, and a strange mist before an odd looking hybrid was shooting towards him faster then he could react. Claws sunk into his chest and the momentum of its charge had him unbalance enough to lose his grip. With a scream, he fell to the ground, tumbling through his beautiful garden and the tree, without its source of magic anymore, stilled immediately.

Rift scrambled to his feet, intent on not letting the hybrid get the better of him while he was on the ground. He snarled, trying to ignore the sounds of fighting going on around him. In the open like this, among nothing more then flower and herbs, he was at a disadvantage. It took a lot of energy to move his big tree around, but it was all he had at the moment. He hesitated for just a second, knowing that he was about to cause a lot of damage, but he went ahead with his idea, giving a silent, tearful apology to his beautiful garden.

He called upon the roots of his giant tree but his lack of conviction only got one of them to move. A horrible creaking noise and a rumble in the ground split the clearing and, a moment later, one of its giant roots broke free from the ground, intending on smashing into the hybrid who lay in front of him.
