TW/CW: Child abuse

Yew didn't wander Eridanus, much.

She tended to stick around Mercurius' home, ghosting his paw-steps. The hybrid feared... something, but what she didn't know. Being found alone by the Stag, who she knew hated her and her family? Being found by Mother? Being found by Grandmother?

But she had gotten an itch, had decided she could spend a few minutes away from the lion. It wouldn't kill her, after all, and it would behoove her to see what her new home was like. It was so intricate, so big, nothing like the Tunnel she had grown up in.

Jayberry hurt.

Her leg had only gotten more and more stiff--her ribs stung with each breath. The wolf's breath rattled in her chest.

But she was loyal, perhaps too much so, to her family. And so she lurked around the forest as much as she dared, seeking out her family. Most of her time was spent in her family's new tunnel, watching over the slowly growing Chrysalises that held every ounce of her hope.

But still, she searched.

Something iridescent, green pinfeathers, incredibly familiar, caught her eye. A sound not unlike a sob built in her throat, and she staggered forward, calling out "Yewberry!"

Yewberry!

The hummingwolf froze.

'Nononononononononono!' the voice was horribly familiar, as weak as it was, and she whirled to face the source of the sound.

And Mother... Mother looked horrible. She lurched more than walked, like some sort of diseased monster. Her foreleg was stiff beneath her, and she was balding, fur growing in errant clumps.

Finally, her outside matched the monster within.

And she could feel nothing other than sheer horror as she said, the words coming out of her beak without her control, "It's Yew now, Mama."

'It's Yew now, Mama.' Her daughter said, and Jayberry's heart broke.

"W-what? No, no it isn't. Your name is Yewberry, you're a Berry. I gave you your name. It's okay, sweetheart, they got into your head. Come home, come home with me. Everything will be okay again. They, they don't have your best interests at heart like I do. They want to turn you against us."

Her voice cracked, lilting and rambling, and she stumbled forward, eyes wide, wild.

The hybrid's wings flared, pinfeathers standing on end at Mother's words.

She might have fallen for them, once. The syrupy coating, the words pointed and aimed to poke at her heart, to convince her that she really did want what was best for her.

"No, Mother." she shook her head. "My name is Yew, now. I'm not a Bloodberry anymore, the Bloodberries are done." Mother would be furious at those words, or she would break down. She wasn't sure which. "I'm... they've taken me in. They've given me a home, they've shown me more kindness than I have ever known."

She stepped back, wanting to run, wanting to call for help.

'My name is Yew, now. I'm not a Bloodberry anymore, the Bloodberries are done.'

Jayberry froze. She... she dared?! Her tail rose, and her ears flattened against her skull. A snarl rumbled,
low in her chest, and she couldn't help but to stagger forward a step, following Yewberry 'No, Yew', and then another. "N-no, Yewberry. You can't do this." 'Please. please, I can't lose you too.'

She broke.

And then Yew wasn't standing there. It was the Stag, the Cat, the Deer. With a roaring snarl, she lunged forward, jaw gaping, teeth glinting.

Yew grimaced, stepping back again. The snarl in Mother's chest terrified her, and she cowered, ears flattening and wings snapping tight to her sides.

Suddenly, she knew how Mother's prey felt, how her own prey felt. The sheer terror, the adrenaline flooding her veins. The urge to run, but being rooted to the ground. 'I'm going to die.'
Mother lunged towards her, and she squealed, "Mama, no!" twisted to the side to take it on her shoulder. But she wasn't fast enough, and she screamed as fangs tore into her flesh, ripping her ear from her skull, tearing down her face to her neck, a great, gaping wound that burned like nothing else.

There was a sickening sense of satisfaction as teeth buried deep into flesh, pin-feathers flooding her mouth along with blood. Some part of her, the part of her that had been shoved back at Yew's words, screamed in horror, wailed for her to stop hurting her beloved daughter, but she couldn't see straight, could only see Pride, Rift, Enka, before her.

Jolting back, she twisted, lunging forward to try and grasp Yew's beak, remembering how sensitive it was.

Mother had stopped speaking, and Yew knew that there was no way to get through to her.

The hummingwolf cried out in fear, jolting back as Mother's fangs snapped shut only inches from her sensitive beak. Yew jolted back, cowering in on herself, "Mama, please! Stop!" She hunched her shoulders, withdrawing her head as much as she could to protect her neck, remembering the feeling of powerful jaws clenching on the back of her skull.

Attempt: Leap back

Jayberry had never been so disappointed in her daughter.

She was deaf to her cries of fear, only able to see her cowering, unwilling to even fight back. "Fight back, dammit! I raised no coward!" she bellowed, lunging forward, fangs snapping as she attempted to sink her fangs into her daughter's fragile wing.
