Vargas twisted slightly, his reflexes and Phlegethon's questionable aim sending the mud slapping harmlessly over the pits at the front of his snout. Or had the creature thought that those were his eyes-? He wasn't sure, and now wasn't the time to stop and ask.
Instead, he lunged forward, trying a new technique--to take the tiger, as it were, by the tail.
Maybe if he just dragged the creature backward, it wouldn't be able to react-? He wasn't sure where he could possibly go from there, but he was curious as to what it would do, what effects it might have. At the very least, it might result in some hilarious Phlegethon-flailing.
To that end, Vargas aimed both forelimbs for Phlegethon's tail, just before the flukes--trying to just grab on, for now. It was a hell of a long-range lunge, so he knew he'd be open to attack until he could truly swivel his entire body behind him. It was a risky maneuver, but perhaps it would pay off.
