ORIGIN - Secrets from the lorekeeper

The aardvark was walking along in Canis, disappointed that this place was to dry to burrow in. She shook her head in dismay, not happy about the poor burrowing conditions here. This place did have a good assortment of bugs here. Well, every place and creature had their strengths and weaknesses. As she walked, her strong nose easily picked up a scent. It was strange, like that of a canine. From the smell, it seemed to be very old. A female maybe? Aardvarks had one of the best sense of smell in the animal kingdom. So her species could easily pick up these things from smell. As she looked, she followed the smell, wondering what she would find?

There were oh-so-many-odors to pick up, particularly to a sensitive nose.

Dried bones. Rats. Stone, stagnant water. Feathers and fur, somewhere close by, and the scent, more distant, of fresh fruit trees.

Lorekeeper's odor was musty, as though the creature who emitted it did not move all that much. And when Erzu came into sight, she lay there quiet: violet-gray splashed with neon greens, quietly asleep, half in a rock crevice near-hidden amongst the bones.

Erzu followed the smell all the way to to a rock crevice. There was a creature there almost hidden among the bones, but she could see it somewhat. But her nose was the best, and she could definitely smell it. It seemed to be asleep. Usually, the aardvark would mind her manners, but in this situation she couldn't. Since the creature smelled old, maybe she could answer all her questions about the lore, secrets and history of the caves. Yes, this was important. The aardvark walked right up to the sleeping beast, and shouted. Her voice was kind, but very, very loud. But, the kindness was there. "EXCUSE ME! MISS! COULD YOU WAKE UP! I HAVE QUESTIONS! PLEASE! HELLO?!!!" For added measure the aardvark would attempt to shake her head with her tiny paws. She really wanted to ask this creature questions.

The dog-like alien woke abruptly, snorting, her many eyes springing wide. "Wha-" she began, and then broke into a rasping cough, pulling helplessly away from the child. It seemed to take her a moment to realize that she was not under attack, and to relax again, but it was clear from her scrabbling that her hind legs were useless, lame.

"Who--are you?" she asked, confused.

The aardvark spoke with a kind and normal voice now that the canine creature was awake. "Hiya! My name is Erzu. I woke you up because I could tell you are a very old creature. So if that's the case, you must know a ton of the caves. I have plenty of questions to ask you, and I was hoping you could answer them." The aardvark gave the creature a big and loving smile. "Please?" With that she would see what the creature would say, but she quickly added something else before forgetting her manners. "Who are you, if you don't mind me asking? What's your name?" The bug eater really, really hoped that this creature would know. She knew for a fact that most gembounds didn't know everything of the caves. That was her goal, to reveal all the lore of the caves.

"Old," Lorekeeper repeated, in a coughing laugh. What a strange way to greet a stranger-! "Yes... I am old," she rasped, and relaxed against the rock. "The Gembound here call me Lorekeeper. It is good to meet you, little one." Lorekeeper wheezed, for a moment, seeming to half-doze, then opened her many eyes to peer at Erzu.

"I know many things... I tell stories, Erzu... Would you like... to hear a story?"

The aardvark liked this creature. She was very nice! Erzu wondered what truth she would like to hear. Then, two ideas finally came to her. She perked up as she spoke to the lorekeeper. "Well there are two stories I would like to hear. The first is about the history of the spire, how it was made. The second is about Orion. I've been to Orion and there are plenty of old buildings and a throne there! Who used to sit on that throne, and who used to live in those buildings? I wanna know all about Orion's history!" She didn't mind which one the lorekeeper started out with first. She wanted to know from the lorekeeper everything about the caves. But maybe there were things the lorekeeper didn't know. That would be stuff she would have to find out on her own.

The Lorekeeper seemed to think, eyes distant for a moment. "I do not..." The Lorekeeper took a breath; "...know those stories." She peered curiously at Erzu. "Throne... tell me of the Throne."

The Lorekeeper seemed to be hoping to be told a story, herself.

Erzu was disappointed hearing that the lorekeeper did not know of either of these things. But, still, she was a deeply kind soul. But not even the aardvark knew of those things. "I really don't know myself. In Orion there are plenty of old buildings, and a large throne looks over the entire ruined city. I know that a long time ago, even before us gembounds, creatures lived there. As for the spire, I heard that it is the source of magic for the entire caves and gembounds. Though, no one knows if it is a living being or just a thing. But I have heard whispers of people using their magic on the spire to test this. Though, they never told me the results of doing that. Saying I was too young to know. But I am determined to find out anyways, about everything." She thought of a moment to see if the lorekeeper knew of anything else. Then an idea came to her. "Lorekeeper, would you happen to know how the caves used to be before us gembounds used to exist? Tell me anything and everything you can remember. I have heard of something called the great awakening, where gembounds just started suddenly roaming the caves. But how was life before us, when you were young up until now? Any important creatures that ruled the caves?" When she hatched, other gembounds taught her quite a bit since she hatched. Maybe it was because they considered her a cute child. Nonetheless, she was a learner after all.

"Everything!" Lorekeeper laughed, a rasping note. "Such curiosity. That is well. But I grow weary fast these days. And 'everything' is a lot. I will tell you a story... if you will hear it."
