ORIGIN - My Kingdom for a Staff!

The little gibbon monkeyed along the ground at an even pace. Not exactly a jog but an even lope. He was on a mission. Though this was his first time really going out on his own, well without an adult. His sister would be along soon, but he was too excited to wait for her to finish eating breakfast. He just couldn’t sit still anymore and he wasn’t as fast as her so she could catch up with him easily.

The little gibbon was making his way through the tunnel leading from Orion to Eridanus. Fluffy daddy had told him about how lush and tree filled the place was. The place where fluffy daddy and Comet had been born. He had only been there once before with Fluffy daddy. That had been when they had found his sister Comet. She liked to wander about, but she was better suited to care for herself on her own than he was. So as a result he didn’t leave home as much to go on adventures by himself. But this time he was leading the mission with Comet in tow. He was looking for a nice sized sturdy stick to help him walk and help protect himself when he went out on his own.

Reaching the vine covered entrance to Eridanus, the little monkey squirmed his way through and out into the large cavern filled with trees. The little gibbon stopped for a moment looking about in pure awe at how green and alive this place was compared to Orion.

Comet gobbled down her breakfast. Sun had already left before her, but she was sure she could catch up. His legs were not exactly suited for walking on the ground. She finished eating her rabbit and exited the house.
Her well muscled legs allowed her to keep a fast and steady rhythm as she ran through the tunnel to catch up with Sun. She knew that she could run, not even sprint, at a speed over twice as fast as Sun. This was just one of her frequent trips to Eridanus, where she enjoyed exploring and hunting. But this time, she was the follower of Sun's expedition. It wasn't like he would be able to stop her from going, anyway. Comet always felt the urge to protect her brother in case he got in trouble. He had already told her that his plan was to find a good stick to help him walk and for protection. She noted the stick would probably also be good to use for smacking things which sounded like something he liked to do.
Finally, Comet arrived at the end of the tunnel, and she spotted Sun looking around. The sheer beauty of the place never ceased to amaze her. The lush greenery was a sharp contrast to Orion. I'm here Sun! Where do you want to go first? she looked around, her nose picking up many scents and possible opportunities.

The little gibbon sat just on the other side of the entrance to Eridanus. His emerald eyes taking in everything around him for a short time. He didn’t want to move, he sat listening to the wildlife moving and living in the underbrush around him. This place was so alive it wasn’t even funny. The little gibbon was completely enthralled by the sights and sounds around him.

Sharp emerald eyes scanned the tree tops curiously. The tops of the trees were so far over his head he knew it would take even him in his swiftness in trees a time to reach the very tops. He couldn’t even see the light orbs through the lush tree tops above him.

He was waiting for a few moments, hoping that Comet would come loping up behind him any second. Backward swept pointed ears soon caught the sound of claws clicking on stone and dirt, then came that sweet ever familiar voice. SHe asked where they were going from here. For a moment the little gibbon sat tapping his finger on his lips in thought. Then he stood up on three limbs and pointed off toward the left. ”That way seems good!” Sun spouted out as he started off at a normal pace which would be a walk for Comet. His emerald eyes were ever vigilant as they search the nearby brush.

He was sure it would take them some time before they actually found a good enough stick. As they moved along the path, Sun’s ever watchful gaze fell upon a bush just off the beaten path with a long mildly thick stick sticking out of it. The little gibbon monkeyed up to it and pulled hard on the stick, but it seemed it wouldn’t budge. He stepped back and grabbed it closer to the bush and pulled as hard as his muscles could muster. The stick pulled free sending him onto his rear. However as he inspected the stick from his place on the ground, he noted that it was crooked and not at all sturdy as he had first thought.

The little gibbon looked at Comet and shook his head. ”Not this one. It’s too brittle.” Sun said as he stuck the stick back in the bush as he had found it. The little gibbon looked at Comet curiously. ”You see any you think might do good” Sun asked as he moved back out onto the main path.

Comet watched Sun think about their destination carefully. He looked quite silly when he tapped his finger on his lips. She watched him point towards the left, and followed him at a walk. She couldn't wait to see what great sticks they would find. The thing was, sticks were also good to chew when she was bored. Her keen eyes scanned the undergrowth along with Sun's but despite being in a jungle, sticks were not easy to find.
Eventually, Comet saw the gibbon focus his eyes on something in a bush. A stick. She watched Sun walk up to it and attempt to pull it out with his hands. She was about to offer him some help when he adjusted his hold on the stick and pulled it out with such force he went flying in the air. Comet ran over and inspected him. Are you okay? she gave him a few licks, and saw that luckily he wasn't hurt to badly.
She studied the stick with the monkey and could agree with him, this stick was not the right one for him. She watched him place the stick back in the bush but she pulled it right back out again. Comet picked up the stick in her jaws and snapped it in half. It felt good destroying the stubborn stick. Revenge.
"Okay!" said Comet, she trotted away a bit to look for some good sticks. But she saw nothing, perhaps they just weren't looking in the right place. She thought about things a bit. "Sun, maybe we are not in the right place. The trees here do not have the right kind of wood. We should go somewhere else to look." she suggested. Another idea was breaking the sticks straight off the trees, but she didn't like harming living things, animals or not.

A bright smile spread over the little gibbon’s lips as he fell back on his rump, a cheerful laugh leaving him. His butt stung a bit from the impact but it was nothing he couldn’t shake off. As Comet trotted up to him asking if he was okay, he flashed her a sheepish grin. ”I’m alright. My butt stings but I’m not hurt.” He assured his sister and reached out to give her a pat on the shoulder. He let out a brilliant chuckle as she licked him and he smiled.

After inspecting and returning the stick to its original place, the little gibbon watched as his sister pulled the stick back out of the bush. Sun looked at his sister with a cocked eyebrow and a slightly turned head. However he watched as she snapped with ease in her powerful jaws. The little gibbon clapped his hands several times enthusiastically. ”You show that stick!” Sun cheered at the sticks' destruction. It had caused him to fall on his butt after all.

The little gibbon watched as his keen eyed sister inspected the area for sticks of any kind, though she came up empty handed. Sun sat for a moment on his rump tapping his finger against his lip once more. Perhaps Comet was right. The trees around here didn’t seem to have the right kind of sturdiness to them that he required. ”Where do you think we should go look then? You’ve been here many times so maybe you would know of a better place with better trees.” Sun thought out loud as his gaze shifted back to his sister. ”Or do you think we should go look in a different cave? The one I was born in is just on the other side of this cave.” Sun suggested but he wasn’t sure that swamp laden Cetus would be a good place to find sticks. Most of the ones there would be waterlogged.

His laugh rang out through the clearing, a delightful sound. Comet smiled when Sun told her that he was not hurt. He was quite the durable monkey, she thought, landing like that usually gives you a bruise.
Comet saw Sun was watching her with a weird expression when she grabbed the stick right back out of the bush. With a crunch, the stick broke in half and she listened to his applause. Anything that hurts Sun, whether alive or dead, deserved to be snapped in half.
She watched the monkey once again fall back into his thinking stance. Everything Sun said made a lot of sense, and she thought through all the options. She knew that places with a lot of water tended to have trees that were too wet, and easy to break. I do think I know of a place. Follow me! Comet looked back to make sure the monkey was following and set off at a walk so he could keep up. One day while she was exploring in Eridanus, she had found a particular tree that was out of place among the other green trees. This particular tree had pink blossoms, and was easy to find. Right, left, right, left, there! She pushed aside a frond and the tree was revealed. The ground was littered with pink blossoms and sticks from the tree. This wood is very hard and also partially fire resistant. We just have to find the right size. Much of the sticks on the ground were not thick or long enough for Sun to use.
Finally, Comet spotted out of the corner of her eye the perfect sized stick. Only problem was, it was wedged at the top of the tree. It looked as if it had already fallen off the tree itself, but got caught on the branches. It's right there Sun! Can you get it? She was sure the monkey would be able to climb onto the tree to receive it, but she stayed under the spot in case he fell.

Sun grinned cheerfully watching his sister with the stick. She was so strong and her jaws so powerful. He was truly lucky to have her on his side. He wasn’t sure he wanted to be on the receiving end of those teeth. Not only was she faster than he was on the ground, she was a lot stronger he was. If it ever came to a fight between the two of them, he knew it would come down to a matter of wits rather than strength between the two of them.

As the little gibbon sat thinking and pondering where they should look next, Comet spoke up eagerly with an idea. His sister eagerly set out and he hopped up and began monkeying along not far behind her. His pace and form getting more sure the more he moved around on the ground, though it still was not entirely all that fast. Sun hummed a soft tune to himself as he followed eagerly along behind his sister emerald eyes keeping an eye out for any possible items.

Sun followed along into the clearing that was covered in sweet smelling pink blossoms. For a moment the little gibbon stopped to take in the pretty sight of the tree itself. He wondered if fluffy daddy had ever seen it, and if he would like to have a clipping of it for his garden. Sun’s attention soon shifted back to his sister that was enthralled looking at the sticks on the ground. Then she pointed out a stick up in the tree. The little gibbon hobbled over to the wolf and looked up at the spot she was looking at. The stick was perfect! Just the right size around and the length was perfect, it was nearly completely straight too.

Letting out a pleased hoot, the little gibbon made his way easily up the tree. Reaching the limb with the nimbleness of practice, the little gibbon stood up on his legs and held onto the branch above him to make his way over to the stick. As he made his way over, his right foot slipped off the bottom branch and he dangled for a second before getting his footing once more, and made his way to the stick. The little gibbon leaned down picking up the stick he dropped it down in front of Comet. With that finished the little gibbon broke off a small green branch from the tree. With that he made his way down from the tree and back to Comet.

The little gibbon picked up the stick and used it to stand up completely straight. Like this he was taller than Comet by an inch or so. The little gibbon tested the stick by walking a circle around Comet and then came to a sitting position in front of her. ”It’s perfect! I love it, and the wood smells sweet too!” Sun exclaimed happily as he reached out to pat his sister between the ears. Then he moved picking up the piece of tree he had removed for fluffy daddy. ”Here can you carry this? I think fluffy daddy would very much like to have one of these trees in his garden.” Sun explained why he had taken a piece of the tree.

As they traveled to the tree, Comet listened to the cheerful tune of Sun's humming, which her sharp ear was ble to pick out. It was obviously meant to be for himself but she joined in along at some of the parts, howling, barking, or whining. Their combined sounds made for a great duet, upbeat and perfect for the walk.
Comet watched anxiously as Sun climbed up the tree. Even if he was a gibbon, that doesn't mean he couldn't fall. As he climbed along, Comet made sure to position herself directly under where he was, and almost had a heart attack when she saw his foot slip for a second. Luckily she watched as he recovered and dropped down the stick to her. She caught it gently between her jaws and set it down on the ground. Then she saw Sun break a branch off the tree, she was sure that he was planning to do something with it.
Comet stomped her feet on the ground, her version of an applause when the gibbon used the stick to stand up straight. It was different with him at that perspective, he was actually taller than her when he did that. Then Sun walked around in a circle and sat down in front of her. His hand gave her a pat between the ears, and she gave him a lick in turn. Comet felt really good finding such a good stick for her brother! Now she didn't have to worry as much about him. Whenever he was out of her sight she was always worried about him getting hurt, but with the stick she was sure he would be able to protect himself better.
She listened to him explain why he broke off the piece of the tree and nodded, it would surely make a fine addition to the thriving garden he already had. "Okay!" Comet resisted all her instincts to not snap the stick in half just like she did earlier. Gently, that was how she had to carry it. But the problem was wolves were not the gentlest of creatures. "Okay let's go!" she walked away from the tree, back towards home.

Sun grinned as Comet joined into his little music session. He wasn’t exactly just humming to himself, it was that he didn’t want to bother his sister if it was annoying. However as the pair walked Comet joined in on the little music session, and Sun started humming louder. He was more happy to just stay at home and keep watch over the home, but for once he was actually enjoying being out on an adventure with Comet.

As Sun climbed up and out onto the branch, he glanced down and spotted Comet moving along underneath him. He felt safer just knowing that his sister was there to catch him if he fell. When his foot slipped he glanced down again, to see Comet have a tiny heart attack as he dangled for a second. But it was simple and easy gaining his footing again. He was glad that his feet had started to grow callused from use. Otherwise climbing the tree would still have hurt his hands and feet. But all the climbing he had been doing in the trees at the house, he had grown thick calluses.

Sun smiled as Comet agreed to the idea of bringing home a cutting for fluffy daddy. Surely a new tree with such pretty flowers would make him happy to have in his garden. After handing off the sprig of tree branch to Comet, the little gibbon stood up and held onto his stick with both hands and began practicing walking as they made their way home.
