brief mention of blood in the second paragraph

One moment, she was opening her beak to say "you're welcome" to the hyena next to her. The next, the ground exploded beneath her talons, and Wyvern screamed, flaring out her wings in a panic. Pale white mandibles closed around her waist, ripping out the lower feathers in her wings as they seized her and dragged her--down? No, no, no, how could she be falling? She'd been standing, on the ground--

Snow rushed past her vision, and the earth shuddered once more, jagged black fissures rushing outward as massive rock slabs heaved and groaned. Her voice cracked, the shrieks diminuendoing as Wyvern ran out of air to scream with. Dimly, she became aware of twin crushing pains near her abdomen, and of the warmth of blood leaking around the mandibles.

Fear, raw and overwhelming, overtook her. There was no Mom around to help. No Eythan--could he even do anything against something this big? The dizzying movement, the massive ice worm, and the snow all around her rendered Wyvern practically blind as she pushed weakly at the ice worm with her talons. That hurts, too-- the worm was biting her waist; would moving her legs make things worse? Wyvern was scared to find out. Instead, she beat her tattered wings at its head, trying desperately to make it let go.

+1 Corruption point (total of 1, Touched)
It had been all nice and dandy one instant- and the next it was chaos. The enormous ice worm that erupted out of the ground was so big that the tiny bat could not see its entire body at once. "EEEE!" was Marshmallow's first thought, spoken out loud. Calmdowncalmdowncalmdown. She needed to help Tahi! It was her job to be his eyes, like she was Arwen's eyes.

"GIANT WORMY!! Grab birdy! Many! Falling!" Marshmallow shouted at the top of her lungs, and it ended it off with an ear splitting, "EEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!" because she's Marshmallow. Terrified, and tiny.

@Tahi-shei (mentioned)

A lot of things happened at once.

First, the ground exploded upwards as some unholy monster snapped its jaws upwards, a cloud of falling ice blanketing his view. Then, another, equally-sized shape descended pitch as night, and the ground crumbled beneath him into demented darkness.

Good thing Reign knew how to act in a crisis, otherwise he'd be crying for mommy.

- Actually, no. Let's take that back. Take that waaaay back.

The cheetah skidded back, slamming his paws down to get as far away as possible-- which would've been the case if the ground wasn't rocking back and forth violently, instead rocketing him into the sinkhole at top speed. And we're talking cheetah top speed here. To any onlookers, this dappled, cloaked, crowned king feline just yeeted himself into the gaping exit hole of the overgrown maggot, at best dashing himself against frosty chitin and at worst never being seen again.

Astraea save his soul. If he hadn't broken Mach 5 and exited this godforsaken cave already, that is.

*chuckles* Reign is in danger

Nemo

Thing just keep getting worse - a small step forward, a major leap back.

Knock the spies out if the sky, great! But now the earth, or at least something large enough to move it like fresh powder, is trying to eat someone in the group!

Fun!

Then, the massive and unpredictable beat seemed to curse the very ground, which would be cool in any other situation, but right now is really bad for literally everyone else!

Okay, for all intents and purposes Nemo should be freaking out right now- and he is! Very much so! But freaking out isn't gonna help him or anyone else near that things maw, so, he does the next best thing- he tries to get it's attention.

Didn't say it was a good idea, mind you. Just the next best thing to freaking out.

So, he does his best and throws what he can together into a whirlwind to attempt a few things, if it doesn't get the attention of the massive beast, that it. Is might even move some of the smaller Gembound away from the worm to relative safety- if his magic doesn't backfire. Oh boy.

How Madhukar's attention could be failing her here and now was a complete and utter mystery. She missed Twisted's attempt at closure, forgiveness... and then she missed her first chance to escape. Why hadn't she been looking out? Maybe she just thought herself too small, maybe she was caught up waiting for Tahi-shei's next order, for where to aim next...

But now she was falling, about to fall, falling for real. No clouds below to stop her if she chose to let herself go...

MADHUKAR? Yes, that was her name, had been since the day she'd hatched-- wait.

The claws grasping at her was the next part of the wake up call. The last part? That was all Draconua.

AWAKEN.

Madhukar attempted to summon the air to her feet. Instead, perhaps it was the panic, perhaps it was SOMETHING NEW that caused her to create a vacuum beneath. Scrambling desperately for balance, Madhukar tried grasping back at Twisted, losing her sense of reality as a RAVENOUS HUNGER BATTERED HER INSIDES. Something was trying to speak, something was trying to speak to her, something was--

Madhukar has received +1 Corruption Point from Draconua's girlbossing!

@Tahi-shei
@Twisted
:D

His senses were still outstretched when he realized that one of the gemstones in the cave was arrowing toward them--and at high speed. Puzzled, he tried to focus on it; surely something underground could not be moving that quickly..?

Was it somehow a... magical reflection of something in the air? He glanced skyward, but no--there was nothing there, and with a mind steeped in confusion he glanced back downward. Alarm abruptly thrilled through him, and he leapt back, crying out. "INCOMING! UNDERGROUN-" and then the earth erupted.

Chaos erupted.

Black rock, and swirling winds. He caught a glimpse of gnashing mandibles and of a thrashing mass of pale feathers through the snow, and the cries of those around him were a sudden horror. He saw Giggle pitch into the hole, scrabbling and falling away--saw Wyvern struggle in the grasp of the massive beak. Saw Reign-

REIGN!

His mind lashed out, magic instinctive, snagging for the cheetah and attempting to pull him back. The sheer speed at which the spotted coat had pitched past him into the pit was terrifying, and it was only as he hauled back--struggling to yank Reign back to him, away from the hole--that he realized his error. Grief, horror, poured over him.

He had magic to lift them all. He could have done so. He could have saved Giggle, with her damn fungal magic--but he hadn't thought of it in that moment. He wasn't well-versed enough in reversing gravity entire and telekinesis was second nature to him--he'd used it without a second thought, a reflex, an instinct.

"GIGGLE!" was what he shouted, instead of Reign, even as he tugged the cheetah toward safety.

He had hardly any time to wonder why the rock was turning black, why the snow was rising around them in clouds. And to add to the chaos, now Mercy's mind came through their link: quiet, gentle, but urgently concerned--Pride? What's happening? and then, Are you okay?

He had no time to truly answer--sending only a flood of imagery, of the chaos all around him. He hoped it was enough explanation, for he had no time to do anything else.

aesthetic...

White flakes scoured the air, a bitter gust raising. The ice worm thrashed, mandibles crushing at Wyvern's flanks--skidding--falling away as the hybrid twisted free from its grip. And then...

The earth erupted.

Had no one told Draconua whose side she was on-? Here, in this cold and crystalline bastion of Order, a tainted lie within the nest of Chaos, she reigned: a force of Chaos herself, a tendril of its entropy thrust in to corrupt and destroy Order's fragile, rigid glass. There were falling bodies... flailing wings. There was screaming.

The ground burst upward in jagged ledges. It cracked open in black fissures. The hiss of His magic coiled up in chaotic whispers, corrupting those close to the source, Touching them with His promises.

The rock crushed at the Ice Worm's flanks, the sound of cracking bone and tearing flesh barely audible beneath the wind's roar. It thrashed: flailed. It turned, grasping again for Wyvern, for its escaped prey, driven by Mother's pure direction--and then Zhusha dove.

A little figure--alone in its attack--but a determined and fiery one. The crane was not fuelled by Chaos--what was it that drove him stabbing beak first into the ice worm's hide..? A rip, a tear, a gouge driven in between the plated skin, and a single line of blood trailing down its flank-... Distracted, the worm turned, gnashing jaws for the crane in flight, and missing: and, thus thwarted, it gave up this ambush as lost. The worm fell away, dropping back into the hole: and with it fell Sora, and Giggle.

Corrupted earth smashed in behind them. They fell with snow, and ice, and tumbling rocks. They fell bouncing against worm spines and tunnel walls. The worm surged away, plowing and grinding--a fleeing, wounded beast--into the earth, and left them falling further...

The rest, scrabbling at the edges, were saved here and there. Individual acts of heroism: what lives could be saved, were. Madhukar, dragged to swift safety by Twisted--emotions and history and action all coiling together into a historical event that only they would ever share. Reign, lifted free and set aside, and safe: Pride would not lose another Seven member, not this time. And Nemo's wind, blasting them all free, farther from the hole, even as its edges crumbled, likely saving several lives.

They were left in the swirling cold, the empty plains around them obscured by curtains of white flakes, the hole gaping corrupt in their center... but those who remained were safe, for now. The last few rocks, the last plummeting plumes of snow, cascaded into its yawning depths.

But Giggle and Sora were now missing. Wyvern was greatly wounded. And among those who had come too close, Chaos whispered its urges.

_____________________

Giggle and Sora tumbled down. Far, farther, the smooth-chewed walls formed by the ice worm's rapid tunneling breaking some of their fall with painful impacts. Perhaps the fall would kill them, or perhaps return them to their chrysalis, the crash of bones and organs on the rock below proving too much for their bodies to handle. If they were "lucky," they would land awake: the very faint pinpoint of light left overhead casting only the faintest gleam over the narrower tunnel they'd fallen into. A tunnel that smelled dead, cold, like old bones. A tunnel in which a deer-like creature reared back with wide eyes, frozen permanent and pure glassy white with terror in its face, a horrific statue left behind by an unknown maker.

_____________________

Wyvern is now seriously wounded.

Giggle and Sora may roll to make any attempt to avoid being chrysalized by their long plummet into the tunnel (or their players may choose death or chrysalis by choice). This is a thirty-five foot fall, but as the tunnel is only six feet wide, they may make an attempt to use their bodies (or magic, if preferred) to try to slow themselves.

The rest of the group may push on toward the mountains, or perhaps find a way to descend down the ice worm's vertical shaft gnawed through the earth--or they might choose to turn back, and give Ursa up, for now. They may also choose to send scouts, or take any other in character action they so choose. The ice worm's shaft is smooth-walled, thirty-five feet deep and approximately six feet wide.

Those who choose to spend this round using Perception rolls of any kind will be able to sense the injured ice worm moving rapidly away underground, toward the glacier tunnels.

Sora, Madhukar, Twisted, Nidhogg, Wyvern, Reign and Giggle all take one point of Corruption and, if not previously already corrupted, are now Touched.

The next GM post will be posted on March 8th.

For a split second--a split second, a heartbeat fraction of a standstill moment--Giggle hung at the pit's edge. Paws scrabbled on blackening rock, voices and wind roaring through her ears. Her fangs were bared by black lips peeled back in a grimace of horror, dark eyes searching those at the edge--would no one help her-?

There's no time, came a soft thought. There was no time. She could forgive them this. Forgive the stranger, the bird, diving for an attack, unable to lift something so heavy as a hyena. Forgive Reign, so close to falling in himself, pulled free by some unseen force. Forgive Pride, frozen in her mind forever in this moment: wheeling back, silver eyes wide to whites, horror in his face. Forgive all of them, in this breath of tragedy-

Except Draconua, who was slamming down and obliterating the FUCKING GROUND BENEATH HER-! The moment of tragic peace roared into motion as the rock churned, and Giggle twisted her head back to roar an insult: "YOU FUCKING MORON-"

-and then she was falling.

A huff escaped her, paws scraping as the snow seemed to give way beneath her--but it was her own weight dragging her down. She caught the briefest glimpse of someone else tumbling with her. And then the world was spinning: rock and snow, light and shadow, the bristles and bleeding carapace of the ice worm, the dozens of feet of tunnel walls streaking past. There was no time to process the pain of her body bouncing off the walls. She struck out her paws, struggling to brace herself here and there, to catch anything with her claws to slow her descent.

Then the ice worm was gone, as was its cushioning body, and Giggle was free-falling. The world spun up, and she could see the pinpoint of light abruptly obscured by darkness: by Draconua, snarling, digging like a dog who'd lost its prey, at the pit mouth above. But she didn't know what had blackened the light, only that it was gone, that she was falling through dark, that she was scared and she was furious. She'd been Touched before, and the lash of chaos only fuelled her anger in this moment. "FfffuuuUUUUUUUCK!" she gasped, barked, yelped, and then her body slammed off the side of the tunnel wall. It was thrown the other way. It struck off again, bounced, and then hit the ground with all her hundred-fifty or so pounds of weight.

There were cracks, which she knew to be her bones. There was no pain, but her body felt wrong. She felt her stone rapidly sweeping out, over her forehead, to take her; a glance up gave her only the briefest glimpse of the horrifying statue in the dark, before Draconua's struggles blotted out the light once more.

She would have sworn further, screamed not to be left alone in the dark, snarled again that Draconua was a fucking moron--but then the fire agate had taken her, and she knew nothing at all.

The gemstone swept over Giggle's large body, smoothing itself to the rock and ice beneath, claiming her here, for now.

exit Giggle

Distantly, he heard chaos erupt. He heard the ground crack and people screaming. He heard the hiss of heat and chaos as it melted snow, he heard Giggle's snap of an insult, and realized with a sickening feeling -- there was only one among them who could inspire this reaction. Distantly, Tahi-shei felt a migraine coming on. Vargas, you had to have known this was a bad idea, he thought distantly, before screwing his courage to the sticking place and screaming -- the sound was a little more shrill than he would have liked -- out his command. "DRACONUA!" There was panic in his voice. "WHATEVER YOU'RE DOING, STOP IT!"

Because, again, it wasn't as if he could see her. He was mostly just making an educated guess. Tahi-shei was cold, desperate, panicking. "HEAD COUNT, PLEASE! COUNT OFF! WHO ARE WE MISSING?" More panic tinging his tone. He still hadn't heard hide or hair of anyone, except Pride screaming for Giggle and Giggle screaming... for herself? "MAU!" he called again, feeling once more on the verge of hysterical.

Is she even still alive?

He tasted blood and fear in the air. The problem was, he couldn't taste ozone. He took a deep breath and paused. "EVERYONE, HOLD. STAND STILL, IF YOU CAN. PRIDE, CAN YOU SHOW ME OUR SURROUNDINGS?" And then, because he felt like he had to clarify now, "WITH YOUR MIND MAGIC?"

It would have been reasonable to scream when the ground fractured and wailed. It would have been reasonable to cry out when Chaos stung your body. It would have, in fact, been reasonable to panic if you were falling from a very great height into a hole. But Sora was not panicking, she was only reacting. This was life or death. Save or die. She knew this game -- she'd played this with Pride. Try to move your body while you're weightless.

She tried to angle herself towards the wall -- to gouge herself into it, with hooves and tusks and the rough edges of her chrysoberyl chrysalis consequence, wanting desperately to not die. Thankfully, this time, she won. She managed to slow herself just enough that when she landed hard, the wind was knocked out of her and she was going to be sore in the morning but she wasn't going to die.

Great. Now it was dark down here. Luckily, Sora had survived the Trial of Darkness, and had ways to counteract that. Her hearing was good enough now to catch bits and pieces of what was above, and she called down from beneath. Was it bright? Not particularly. But, at the very least, it would illuminate these tunnels to her echolocation. She glanced at Giggle's chrysalis. Well, that wasn't ideal. "HEY GUYS? THE HYENA CHRYSALIZED!" She paused. "I'M OKAY, BUT THERE'S CREEPY SHIT DOWN HERE!"

A moment later, the big, triangley one under Vargas's command stuck her face into the sliver of available light, illuminated only briefly by it, and then screamed down a jet of black fire. Sora couldn't actually look up at that angle, but she could hear the scratching and the hiss of fire, even if it was too far away to feel. She shifted slightly backwards, and narrowed her eyes. "WHAT THE HELL, MAN?"
