Appearance
Aethereal is heavily insulated and covered in tough skin and thick (but very soft) fur; she has hard plates on her neck and belly. Notably, she lacks a head, and instead has a strange, sliced opening to her neck. In this opening is her mouth and throat, lined with many little teeth able to process only small chunks of food. She can suck up these small chunks like a vacuum. Around this opening are organs she uses for hearing, so her hearing may become muffled while eating. The long hairs on her spine, chest, and legs are specialized sensory hairs that gauge temperature and air currents, useful when flying. She breathes using the gill-like vents on her sides, and can also smell through chemoreceptors inside. Her forearms are inward-facing and she can run and leap like a cat; her shoulders are incredibly strong, and she can pull or carry a lot of weight. It is not entirely clear where Aethereal's voice comes from—its voice often sounds like whispers, which might easily be lost in the indistinct murmuring that results from her corrupted magic, but can turn into a monstrous roar. The ends of her wings are like layered sheets of skin stretched between supporting bone structure, which aids her in flying through treacherous weather. She keeps them tucked tightly against her body when not in use, but occasionally flares them out without warning when she wants to smell something more clearly. In all, Aethereal stands about 9 feet tall at the shoulder and is roughly 16 feet long chest-to-rump, excluding her tail, which is almost as long as her body. She prefers to keep herself as compact as possible, and often droops as if tired or even exhausted. Personality
I wish to know nothing but the truth - From the moment she is hatched into this world, Aethereal must struggle to tell the difference between illusion and reality. She cannot trust her own senses; the indistinct whispers and sudden pressure changes resulting from her corruption sound and feel very real to her, especially with her sensitivity to changes in air pressure and wind currents. She learns quickly, out of necessity, how to search for a nearby source of warmth and use her sense of smell to distinguish a real Gembound from a nonexistent touch on her wing or grip on her shoulder. Learning to ignore the whispering is easier, but she will slip up from time to time with the pressure changes even when she is older. Because of her struggle dealing with the side effects of her magic, Aethereal has a healthy dose of respect/fear for the power of lies and illusions. When she asks a question, she expects all the details, and will of course return the favor. She hates guessing games -- if one wants something, they should come out and say it, not hide it like an indecisive, infuriating coward. She abhors lies and liars, and would not even lie to an enemy unless the situation was truly desperate. Anyone who deliberately misleads her will have a giant, fluffy, furious, undying-hatred-noodle to deal with. Lastly, a promise made is a promise kept -- but she never makes them lightly.
When she does sleep, it is often in short, unsatisfying bursts. Whispers are easy enough to ignore, but to be suddenly in the grasp of a crushing pressure when she is trying to rest-- ? She seeks out peace and calmness, and takes comfort in the touch of other Gembound-- but only if she knows them as a steady, predictable presence. Sudden movements are treated with distrust and sometimes hostility. She herself is even-tempered: when she is calm, it takes a long time to build up anger; and when she is angry, she is slow to calm down. If a conflict has not already started, she will rarely be the one to fan the flames or strike the first blow. If she has a goal in mind, she will not abandon it without a very convincing reason. She pursues goals and completes tasks with an intense focus; she does not like doing multiple things at a time.
Aethereal believes in balance. The world must have a symmetry to it; there must be an other side to everything to keep things in equilibrium. Good things come with bad things, actions come with consequences, and no one entity should have too much power. Life comes with victories, defeats, and even deaths; she will not interfere in that. But if she thinks that an important aspect of the world comes too close to extinction, or if a Gembound/group's power is beginning to exceed what they were meant to have, she will step in to help the weaker side.
