Appearance

Anubis is large for his species, at just 40 inches long once full grown, although he'll forever be lanky and thin, almost as if malnourished. A medium-sized canine, similar in appearance to a fox with course, dusty brown fur covering most of his body, lighter on his belly and chest and lower jaw. On his back, like a drape or perhaps like wings folded and resting across his body, are markings of black and white that follow a triangular pattern from his shoulder and...ah, but Anubis has little fur past his shoulders, doesn't he?

It's striking, the sudden change from the upper half of a common jackal to almost snake-like scales. They cover his front legs and hindquarters and even over the tail. They give the appearance that Anubis had been dipped in gold, with their brilliant color and the way they reflect light. It isn't actually gold, nor does it offer any metallic protection, but it is unique nonetheless.

His posture is strange, nose usually pointed towards the ground, shoulders tall and stiff. He almost appears to be on edge constantly, yet he usually remains perfectly calm. He slinks close to the ground, as if always hunting, yet true aggression would show ears back, and lips raised, revealing the gemstone locked on his upper jaw, taking the place of his upper canines. When he speaks, his voice is dark, deep, and husky, usually only a bit above a whisper, and very rarely giving away emotions.

His stone, an apache tear obsidian, is affixed to his upper jaw, beneath the skin and taking the place of his upper canines. On his right cheek, a spiky rupture of obsidian has broken through the skin in a small clustered line.

Personality

He is strange. Dark and morbid, obsessed with death and what comes at the end of life, of rebirth and how people are different over time. He studies the world around him, how it moves and changes with time, how plants grow and die and decay to nothing, how bodies melt to oil and gemstones are taken and given life again. How situations transform a person and how, in these caves, death is not an end. It never seems to be an end. It's a cycle, unending, always changing yet unchanging. It intrigues him. He will learn from it, study it closely. To perhaps unlock a way out, if there every could be one, would be his life's dream.

He's quiet, easily lost in thought, not very conversational, but happy to sit down and swap knowledge with others. At first, he's not motivated to create change, but is content to watch from the sidelines. There will come a time, however, when he begins to dabble himself, poke something here, make a change there. And he will sit back and watch as his life makes an impact. But he was not born to lead, he will always remain a follower, stepped in the shadows of another, playing with his toys behind the scenes. Never at the front, always at the back, but he knows that, sometimes, that is where the greatest power is.

Power is an obsession. To have control over another is like a drug to him. He'll always be independent, able to survive by himself, preferring to only rely on his own skills, yet manipulating with words and magic are a heady tonic. It's almost like his own form of entertainment. Knowing that he is in control, even if others don't see it that way. He's not a leader, he never will be, but its not always the leader that has the power, if only someone is whispering in their ear. It's not that Anubis is evil or malicious, he's actually quite empathetic and aware of his actions and of general morality. He just has his own, sometimes twisted way of going about living and he is, above all things, deeply selfish.
