Appearance
A typical Norway Rat, but for the small and jagged cluster of phenakite at his left haunch. The gem is translucent, a muddy brown tinged with yellow, entirely unattractive to behold. It is also a small gem, an inch or so across and taking up only perhaps fifteen or so percent of the breadth of the rather broad muscle.
The rat himself is eighteen inches long, in total, weighing slightly over a pound: on the larger size for his species. His build is fairly bulky, without being overly heavy; his head the broad one of a male rat rather than the slender head and slim, trim body of a female. His fur is smooth, always carefully well-groomed, a dark-tipped agouti brown. Long whiskers ensure he never steps blindly, even in the full dark; and his pinprick dark eyes and rounded ears keep him oriented. The brown color fades to a brown-pink on nearly-hairless, point-clawed feet, and on the long, scaled tail. The rat has a surprisingly deep voice for such a small creature--not a rumbling bass, but a dignified, well-enunciated baritone. His words are smoothly-spoken, his speech precise. He does not, too, display much emotion on that rodent face, nor in the controlled voice; he always appears quite matter-of-fact.
Personality
Archimedes is difficult to read. His motivations, his goals, and his beliefs are held close to his chest, and he is not a very open, outgoing or social type of creature. Instead, he is reserved: an enigma to most who will know him. It is difficult to know what he is thinking, planning, or feeling. However, there are things that can be gleaned, some more easily than others. Though he does not turn others away, socially, he also does not open heart-to-heart conversations with perfect strangers.
He is, above all else, intelligent. His mind works quickly, and his words speak of deep education where none could possibly exist. He is generally quick to form accurate conclusions, and smart enough to know when he cannot do so. The ability to work through puzzles, to use unusual thinking patterns to get where he wants, and to predict the likely next step in the actions of others or the events of the caves--this is his strongest point, and the one perhaps most obvious to observers. Logic is his weapon, and he wields it well. Archimedes is dignified. His demeanor is that of one always in control--of himself, if nothing else. He is most often polite, in an unsmiling but always socially correct manner. He will treat others with respect unless and until they display, to him, that they do not deserve it. He moves with deliberate measure, rarely rushing or skittering about. Archimedes is the sort of fellow who thinks before he acts. Lastly, of his most noticeable traits, the rat is fastidious. He is hardly a dandy, preening and fluffing his fur--but he does keep himself clean. While he is not afraid to get dirty in pursuit of his goals, he at the same time will clean up as quickly as possible. His fur is always spotless, and very little odor clings to him, bar that of a typical male rat. He may take, even, to perfuming himself with flowers or the like, should the situation allow for it. Archimedes' familiar is a Golden Charger snake with six golden eyes to match its golden scale "armor." It isn't that big--just under four feet long--but is capable of carrying Archimedes medium distances, and its venom--Stonerot--is capable of rapidly calcifying the tissue of bitten victims.
