Appearance

Arke is a Lucifer's Hummingbird- an overly dramatic name for a tiny, cute little bird. Their body length is just under 4 inches, and they weigh an 'impressive' 4 entire grams. They resemble the male morph of their species- although otherwise they have no biological sex. Most of their body is a greyish-brown that glimmers an olive green in the right light. Their underside is a lighter whiteish color- there is also a faint stripe of it behind their eye which leads into the patch of white on their neck. Taking up most of their neck, however, is a 'gorget-' a patch of iridescent purple-reddish feathers with a glint of orange. It goes from their 'chin' and under each eye to the end of the neck, with the corners going farther down than the center. The feathers can ruffle and 'bristle,' or flare, which Arke usually does when worked up, angry, or trying to be scary. Likewise, their usually-pointed tail actually has a sharp cut out of it's center, only visible when flared out.

Their gemstone is Alexandrite- a beautiful gem that shifts color depending on the light that shines on it. In incandescent light or bulb lighting it appears a rich reddish-purple plum color, mimicking their gorget. In other kinds of lighting it appears a greenish-blue. The gemstone replaces the front top part of their skull- from beak-tip to forehead. It mostly comforms to the natural shape of the skull, with two exceptions- two nubby 'antenna' that barely protrude from their forehead, and pair of short mandible-like protrusions at the base of the beak.

Arke has two modes- on and off. On is your typical living- for a bird [or bug] anyways. Buzzing around as lightning speeds, picking fights, and constantly searching for food. Arke can eat sugary nectar or similar juices, and also bugs small enough to catch in their very small beak.

"Off" is just a couple steps away from dead. Instead of sleeping, hummingbirds enter torpor. Their breathing and heartbeat slows dramatically, and their body temperature drops near to the ambient temperature, except in cold caves. Despite the dramatically reduced metabolism and energy need, hummingbirds store very little fat and Arke will starve and chrysalize within a few days if they are stuck in torpor- typically because of extreme cold.

Arke is a tiny ball of unbridled aggression that you would be unwise to call 'cute' while within their earshot. Arke is always doing the Most Possible All Of The Time, and since they are generally discontent, this usually includes some form of harassment or violence- against everything or nothing in particular. Even Arke themself isn't safe from their own wrath- even if they'd refuse to admit such a thing.

Arke isn't territorial in the typical sense- although they certainly value and protect their person spaces- but they are EXTREMELY protective in nearly every other sense. Their pride, their power, their people- it's all THEIRS, and they hold onto it with a vice's grip. Threatening any of these in the slightest is the quickest way to provoke Arke into violence- not that it's entirely HARD.

Arke is comfortable going toe-to-toe with even the biggest foe- which is good, because most gembound are substantially bigger than themself. Their modus operandi is most often 'bark-then-bite,' They'll gode someone into attacking and then dance around them while peppering spells- or maybe even going in for a swift peck if they're feeling particularly bold and idiotic.

They will be [hopefully] inducted into The Chaos Forge early in life, and this will drastically affect their development. Despite their 'tiny dog syndrome' Arke will often feel incredibly small- both in the physical and metaphysical sense. Many members of the forge were created with purpose- whether they were crafted by hand via a master or a spark of life shoved into a carefully selected stone. Arke was born with no purpose; no rhyme or reason. Simply errant magic formed into life. They will work hard to leave this behind- to find purpose, or prove they aren't purposeless- even if the only one they're really trying to convince is themself.
