Appearance
When I was a child, I'd sit for hours Staring into open flame
 A surprisingly normal example of a Panthera pardus, considering the many other creatures living in these caves. Astéri stands at a height of two feet and a little at the shoulders, and almost six feet long. His orange-yellow pelt is covered with rosettes, but his colors are more often than not stained with ash and soot. His eyes look as if they had swallowed up a flame, gleaming colors like a burning blaze shining above his muzzle. Astéri's gemstone is an irregularly-shaped raw dragon's breath opal; colored deeply red, interspersed with spatters of blue. The gemstone shines orange when it catches the light, flickering like a flame, and whenever the leopard performs magic, it heats up, as if threatening to ignite if called upon fiercely enough. His voice is strong, focused, and slightly raspy from smoke inhalation. Although his childhood is behind him, he still seems to be filled with the energy from it; it's hard to get him to sit still, sometimes, always moving and pacing and fidgeting about. He has a bouncy, bounding gait, quick with excitement. The cat seems to be always followed by the scent of embers and smoke; his feet sometimes leave ashy pawprints as he walks, and those with a keen enough sense of smell can often identify him on his brimstone scent alone. Astéri was born into the late aftermath of Raheerah's rampage through the caves, when dragonfires still burned bright throughout Orion and Polaris. The intense heat of the fire cracked the gemstone shell of his chrysalis, and the event gave him a fixation with the stuff. The smell of ash, the sight of smoke twisting in the air, the way fire twists and leaps like ribbons—there's nothing more beautiful to him. He was born into a cradle of fire, and it's to this fire that he will return, over and over again, no matter how many times he singes his fur or burns his skin. He wears the scars he does accumulate with pride; after all, they're a sign of his connection to his element, and what he's meant to be. He feels most comfortable around a flickering flame; a childhood spent around the stuff has built up a tolerance to the familiar pain of a burn wound, and now the leopard hardly flinches when embers leap too close. He seems to embody his element, in a way. His emotions are intense—fear becomes terror, excitement becomes elation, anger becomes fury, and sadness becomes sorrow. Although he has learned some measure of emotional self-control through simply growing up, Astéri will always be first and foremost driven by his feelings. His heart comes before his head; it's certain that he'll end up leaping into a bad situation just to save someone sooner, rather than later. After meeting the bird Elroy and proceeding to save him from a swarm of green wallcrawlers, only to later find him hurt and traumatized by the magic of the Spire, he has developed an urge to protect. He wants the gembound around him to stay safe; he wants to better his magic not only to connect himself further with fire, but to be able to defeat the dangers that might threaten them. And after his perceived 'failure' to protect Elroy, he wants, more than anything, for that to never happen again. History
