Appearance
One would think a creature such as Aura would be aquatic, given his mixture of whale- and manta ray-like traits. But he is, in fact, a creature of the Air. Imagine the top half and mouth of a manta ray, flat and wide body, with ‘wings’ to help propel itself forward and a large oval-shaped mouth that filters the water for the tiny creatures it eats. Also imagine the cephalic fins on either side of its mouth that help guide its food towards it. Now imagine the bottom half, tail fin, and blowholes of a whale. The underside of the body looks “fat.” It has a convex curve to it which would seem to suggest that the Gembound has a large stomach. It also has four blowholes on its back, two on the left and two on the right, that make a sort of square shape if one were to play connect the dots with the blowholes. The tail isn’t quite as thick as a whale’s but it is the same shape, with the flat part of the fin standing vertically like a rudder. Aura’s adult length, including the tail, is 15 feet, and his width, from one wing-tip to the other, is 20 feet. He weighs about 1000 pounds.

The top half of the body is a blue-grey color, nothing special to look at, for the most part. The fun begins on its underside. Aura’s entire bottom half is bioluminescent, in colors of light sea-foam green, slightly darker seawater green, light aqua blue, and slightly darker ocean blue. If one were to look up and see Aura’s belly, they would see these colors in shimmery, glimmering movement, almost like watching the Aurora Borealis, or as if watching water rippling or being moved by a gentle breeze. Aura’s cephalic fins are also bioluminescent, and there is a smattering of these colors across his top half, as if someone flicked glowing paint over him. The purpose of this light is to attract food, mainly fish. But Aura also eats insects, crustaceans, and some aquatic plants. He eats his food whole, even the large fish. He has no teeth with which to chew. Instead, his strong stomach acid quickly dissolves the food. Due to his size and his mode of transport, he must eat many times throughout the day. He produces very little waste. His stomach acid can dissolve anything from vegetation to bone, and even some softer rocks and metals. Whatever waste he does produce is very concentrated.

Aura is, as a reminder, a creature of Air, not Water. He flies or floats to move around, and he does this by converting food energy into helium, which makes him lighter than air. He has four gas chambers (also known as gas bladders) in his body, above his stomach, connected to the stomach through four tubes, each tube leading to one of the chambers. Once the food begins to dissolve, a chemical reaction occurs within the body that converts the food energy to helium. The helium flows naturally up the tubes and into the gas chambers, since it is lighter than air and therefore rises. The gas chambers are connected to the four blow-holes on his back, one blowhole for each gas chamber. The blowholes allow Aura to release helium from one or any of these, and he can also naturally close the gas chamber off from its blowhole if he wishes to retain the helium within that chamber. This large amount of control over his helium retention or release helps him to maneuver through the air. He can go higher by retaining more helium, or lower himself closer to the ground by releasing it. This, coupled with his wings which can very intricately create specific currents of air around him depending upon how he moves them, and his rudder-like tail, give him very good control over exactly where he wants to go. He generally moves slowly, at a speed of about 3mph, which is the average human walking speed. His top speed is 18mph, three mph faster than the average human running speed, and he can maintain this speed for long distances if need be.

The fact that Aura’s body runs on helium, there are a few things that one must be aware of. First of all, Aura cannot fully submerge himself in water. He can rest on top of its surface, and submerge himself far enough to snatch fish that come close to the surface. But if he were to attempt to push himself down into the water, eventually the water pressure would cause his gas chambers to split, pop, and/or explode open. This would cause massive internal bleeding and would flood the rest of his body with the escaped helium, and he would die in a matter of minutes or hours depending upon the severity of the damage. Even if his gas chambers were impervious to damage, attempting to swim beneath the surface of water would be far too difficult with all the helium in his body and he would rise back up like a cork. Also, making the air pressure too great, say, by using Pressure Magic, will cause the same rupturing of his gas chambers. It seems Aura understands this naturally, and, despite having Pressure Magic, he will never use the spells that alter air pressure unless attempting to equalize the pressure around himself if it becomes unstable. Causing the air pressure to lighten too much can also damage him in almost the same way. Instead of the gas chambers “crumpling” until they break open, they will expand in the lightened air, to a point, but if they expand too far, the lining of the chambers will break open. Understand that it would take a great amount of change in the air pressure to cause any real damage. The lining of Aura’s gas chambers, stomach, and the tubes connecting them to each other, and to the blowholes, is very tough, but also somewhat flexible, sort of like rubber. He is not impervious to damage in terms of air pressure, but he is naturally resistant to it. Otherwise he’d have a hard time living very long. One thing to note is that, if, for some reason, Aura completely runs out of helium (perhaps because he is too injured and weak to find food for a long period of time) he will lose the ability to fly/float. If this happens, he will be basically in the same position as a beached whale. And at nearly 1000 pounds, it would be far too difficult for anyone to help move him unless they were even heavier than him. If this were to ever happen he would most likely starve to death and/or die of dehydration.

Other things to note about his appearance include his Gem, which is a (relatively) small faceted blue topaz in the center of his belly. Technically, it is visible, as it lies on the outside of his body, but since it’s the same color as his natural bioluminescence, it’s nearly impossible to spot. When performing Magic, if the spell cast is strong, it glows brighter than his bioluminescence, which is already fairly bright, and this is the only time the Gem is ever noticeable. The other important thing to know about Aura is that whether or not he can verbally speak is unknown. He communicates mostly through body language, and something akin to whalesong, but the whalesong doesn’t include any actual words. His communicative sounds include humming, rumbling, and “moaning” (the usual noise you would think of when you think of whalesong). Sometimes his noises can be uncomfortably loud, and sometimes they can be completely inaudible to other Gembounds, as he can change the pitch and frequency at will to a degree. He uses these noises and his body language to denote his emotional state, but whether or not your Gembound can understand him is up to you. One more thing to know is that, yes, helium is that gas which makes your voice all high-pitched when you suck it out of a balloon. Those who get too close to Aura's blowholes will experience voice-altering effects. Those who linger too long around these blowholes will become light-headed. They may pass out, and/or they may suffocate and die. At worst, the inhalation of too much helium will cause one's lungs to explode if it is inhaled too quickly. Please note that only those flying directly above and too close to Aura (or those who somehow climb onto his back) will experience any of these symptoms, and that obviously, whatever happens to your character is always up to you. Those who are below him, to the side of him, or are relatively high above him (and not hovering in the same place above him), are in no danger of helium inhalation.
Personality
Aura is, first and foremost, concerned with himself and his own survival. Eating is his main priority, since not having enough food means a lack of helium production, and not enough helium means he can’t fly and is therefore trapped on the ground, unable to move, and liable to starve to death. If he is disturbed while eating, he may very well become a giant “hangry” beast and attempt to harm whoever or whatever disturbed his mealtime. The same goes for when he is trying to sleep. When I say someone “disturbed” him during his mealtime, I mean “physically attempted to stop him from eating.” If someone comes up and just tries to talk to him, that does not count as a “disturbance.” Aura is also very good at blocking out noise while sleeping, so that it’s actually difficult to wake him from sleep by just talking. He can even ignore yelling if it isn’t persistent. If he is not feeling particularly social, he will usually just float away provided he’s not trying to eat. Under normal circumstances, he will only attack another Gembound if they attack first.

A note about Aura attacking others: He will not attack someone without giving ample warning first. He starts with low warning rumbles, and the sounds grow louder the more agitated he is. He will only attack if the other Gembound continues whatever it is they’re doing that is bothering him after he’s already warned them to stop. Whether your character understands his noises is up to you, but be warned that even a character who doesn’t understand he is annoying Aura is at risk of being attacked by him (obviously only with your permission).

Aura’s second priority is finding out as much as he can about Origin Cave. He can often be seen floating in place for long periods of time in front of objects of interest, such as the Spire and the Carvings, even touching them with his cephalic fins. or the tip of a wing. This is another time in which, if disturbed in a physical way, he will attack. If being spoken to, he will completely ignore the other Gembound, perhaps not even hearing them. What exactly his motives are for studying the Cave so intensely is unknown. Since he does not speak, and the sounds he makes only convey general emotion, he never explains why he spends so much time analyzing places and objects in the Cave.

When not eating, sleeping, or studying anything, Aura is about as True Neutral a character as possible. He reverts to a state of conserving energy and fulfilling his needs as they need to be fulfilled. He is still an animal, and therefore he still needs to be social with other Gembounds, and to have fun and do silly things. He also needs to keep himself clean, which he does by floating on the surface of water and using his wings to scoop water onto his back. Because his diet is mostly fish, he often stays close to sources of water, so any fun he might have probably has to do with water. He may attempt to splash another Gembound to incite a funny reaction if the other Gembound seems friendly towards him.

Note that Aura, when not taking care of survival needs or studying, basically mirrors the behavior of other Gembounds around him. If a Gembound is kind to him and seems to want to have a friendly interaction, Aura will also be friendly and approach his new acquaintance with joy. On the other hand, if a Gembound seems hostile towards him, he has no qualms about starting fights. If a Gembound ignores him, they are ignored in turn. You see how this works.
