Appearance

Bentley is a Bernese Mountain Dog, a big swatch of black fluff edged with rusty red and tipped with white. twenty-seven inches at the shoulder. At four cycles, his weight will finally catch up to match: a healthy ninety-five or so pounds, leaving him a little on the athletic side. He'll wind up a healthy-looking specimen, with long, glossy fur and a flowing gait and a big, boxy head. The cluster of citrine at his right shoulder is situated far enough from the joint to not impede him. His voice is smooth and warm, usually full of cheer and reassuring, and a strong doggy odor will always cling to his fur. Thankfully, the magical nature of the caves allows him to avoid the health-defect fate that otherwise plagues his breed; it staves off the inevitable heart disease or cancer that would take him were he on Earth.

At adulthood he loses a bit of his puppyhood's bumbling walk, but not all of it; when he's excited he'll tend to bound and stumble, though he's careful not to trample friends or delicate plants. His gaze as an adult can only be described as 'soulful': a pretty shade of deep gold that looks brighter yellow in sun-like light, and deeper rusty in shadows.

Personality

Bentley is a Good Dog.

He's happy, cheerful, and attentive; empathy comes naturally to him, and he'll swing appropriately from awe to adoration to fear as he eagerly listens to friends (or strangers) speak. He's unafraid to give physical comfort, be it a swipe of a tongue or a leaning in to provide support. He's adventurous and energetic, always ready to bound off on a happy whim; the moment he's invited to go on a journey, you can count him in! In his mind, everyone's a potential friend--and proven friends are treated with care, respect, and as Bentley grows older, a deep loyalty and protectiveness.

That said, he thoroughly enjoys downtime, too. Curling up in a warm place and snoozing the hours away--dreaming happy dreams--provides just as much happiness as an adventure. Indeed, this dog's a dreamer, often losing himself in daydreams and stories for many hours on end, sometimes even losing track of conversations when his mind cheerfully wanders off without him.

Ben's trusting nature combined with his average intelligence means he's fairly gullible to those with ill intent. That said, while he's no genius he's no dummy, either. His bumbling antics might seem goofy at times, but there's a sensitive and thoughtful soul beneath, even if he's not the best at working out complex riddles or puzzles. He'll be there, though, to offer his support to those who are.
