GENERAL OVERVIEW AND ABILITIESFirst, imagine this: a lumbering, looming and front-heavy mountain of a monster; tall, very tall, eleven feet tall at the shoulder in biped form; hunched over, the head of a fiendish, prong-horned predator hung just above the shoulders. To describe the torso you see... "barrel-chested" doesn't even begin to cut it, the whole chest area is just one tangled orb of shaggy fur. That torso alone sports three pairs of appendages that range in size and purpose, while the much slimmer lower half houses the legs and tail, making for 9 limbs altogether. One of those pairs of appendages on the torso just so happens to be fully functional, sprawling bat wings, which only adds to the terror factor. The lower half, by comparison to everything happening on the torso, is almost laughably lean, but it is still powerful enough to hold the weight of the top half. The beast itself can walk comfortably as a quadruped or a biped, and, in quadruped form, can even use its bulky foremost limbs to launch itself forward in a mad dash for a short amount of time. FORMING THE HEADThe head itself is a marvel. Obviously feline, an even blend of smilodon and pallas' cat, it has sharp features that get rounded off at the ends into strong blocky shapes. The muzzle would usually go out as far as a smilodon's, but it gets cut short and tipped with a heart-shaped bat nose. A set of large, curved pronghorns jut out from skin and skull just above two massive, triangular disc ears. Accompanying those sharp edges are four more: two long blade-like fangs coming down from the roof of the mouth and two smaller tusks coming up from the jaw. Four narrow eyes are settled evenly above the cheeks, homes to slit pupils that wander and glower freely. And finally, to top off the insane geometry of this face, the entity's little grossular stone threads itself part way through the front of the right tusk. This does not disrupt the function of the tusk. LIMBS, LIMBS, AND MORE LIMBSLong, powerful forelimbs covered in thick fur drop down to the floor like tree trunks, blatantly feline paws making hefty thuds with each step. And beneath those arms? Well they're harder to spot, but tucked into all that fur and muscle is a second, much smaller pair of limbs; sharp, less dextrous, almost completely devoid of hair - these are stabbing and slicing implements. Bolted to the top of the torso are the aforementioned bat wings, in all their glory; large, sweeping shields, capable of carrying the full weight of the catawampus as long as it has momentum. Below the torso, the thick coat of fur rapidly tapers away, leaving lean legs and primordial pouch almost completely bare. The legs are a mix of bat-like and cat-like, resulting in back feet that are perhaps not the best for running, but could be good for grabbing and carrying in midair. The tail is a special (as all tails are); in regards to the full size of the monster, it is short, but in actuality it is about medium length, and covered in an average amount of fluffy fuzz. FUR DISTRIBUTIONThe fur distribution of the catawampus is extremely unbalanced. The front half is absolutely smothered by fur - the chest and ears more so than the face and neck. It makes everything on top seem bigger and heavier than it actually is. That hair (and effect) runs partway down the belly until, like a lion's mane, the bulk of the hair slims down. The lower half sticks out from there, almost barren. The only place where the fur picks up again is at the tail, medium-short in hair length. COLORS AND PATTERNSCarried over from its crystalwing bat ancestry is some of that crystalline keratin gene. The effect is partially diluted, giving the catawampus's fur and skin a rose pink tint, and the glossy sheen of hard candy when it sits completely still. These are layered over two main colors: an agouti sort of brown, and white with just a hint of ashen grey. Truly the colors a sentient mountain deserves. The ashen white covers the mane, most of the head, front part of the ears, all of the frontmost limbs, almost all of the hidden stabbing limbs (which helps those blend in better with the mane), and the whole underside of the beast. The way the ashen white splatters over the torso and chest resembles a pine marten's markings. There are pallas' cat markings on the face and tail. The brown agouti claims the back of the head and ears (right before the mane starts), the very base of the stabbing arms (hidden by the mane unless the arms are fully stretched), and the whole lower half minus the tail. GROWTH OVER TIMEAs a kitten, this being will be surprisingly small (around the size of an adult pallas' cat)! It will be pudgy, very cute, and pretty holdable. It will be born with its wings, and they will grow alongside it. Over the course of Cycle 1 and Cycle 2, it will grow steadily to about 5 feet tall. Muscle will start to build, but not much. A little bit of its adult mane and teeth will grow in. The growthspurt hits in Cycle 3, wherein the entity will have elongated periods of frequent hunting, gorging, and crashing. This is because it will have to grow 5-6 feet taller! Plus, its mane, musculature, teeth, tail, and a bunch of other things will have to grow too. It's a LOT. During Cycle 4 it should, provided enough nutrition, finish its growth at an even (odd) 11 feet tall, with all the insane power I have just described to you in full effect. A "catawampus" (the noun form) is a wild beast born from the imagination. A creature of yore; a mostly neutral sort of legend given to smaller beings to inspire wonder or invoke fear. Perhaps it is similar in nature and appearance to the alebrijes of Oaxaca, or, at the other end of the spectrum, the European Renaissance Era renditions of lions. Whichever- however it may appear, a catawampus is above all things fantastical, askew, and untamed. It will go where it wills, do what it pleases, and take what it wants (such creatures are prone to theft). It may snatch your fortunes and resources, or it may steal away the demons that ail you, but most likely... most likely it will just claim your bed or your rug or something. If one ends up in your domain, it may be wise to relocate. THE SPECIFICS [WARNING: JESTERSHIP AND JAPERY AHEAD!!!]This particular catawampus we're dealing with has a few hallmark traits. First of all, it doesn't really pose any immediate threat unless provoked. Of course, provocation can be classified as anything from a direct physical attack to the possession of something the creature arbitrarily decides it wants. It seems fickle tempered in that way, but is by no means unintelligent. It is... capable of being reasoned with? Secondly, this catawampus travels and hoards a lot. It creates lairs -- some permanent and some temporary -- and either guards (permanent) or hides (temporary, usually) them. It tends to, on its travels, take a varying degree of interest in other Gembounds as though they, too, are objects to keep. It also may take interest in Gembounds as genuine companions, and will treat them with special care, but its loyalty is never certain.Third and last, it seems to have a flair for entertainment and the dramatic. Displays of power or motion, interesting combinations of colors and patterns, pleasing sounds, the like. It appears to copy the style or keep the memorabilia of that which it most enjoys.
