Appearance

Charles is a medium sized bird, around 14 inches in length and weighing around 4 oz. He's covered from head to toe in jet-black feathers that are quite soft to the touch. The black is so deep it seems to absorb the light around him, only highlighted in the brightest, harshest light. The feathers, if one got close enough to see each one individually, are noticeably shorter around his neck and head. He's got a thick but short beak, a little lighter then his feathers, more reflective to light, but still deep, inky black. His tail is long and fans out when he flies, but his wings are short for a bird of his size. His flight is a little clumsy and slow, but he's an excellent runner and seems to prefer walking to flying.

After completing the Trial of Hydra, Charles was also given long, bat-like ears that are capable of echolocation, which weight down his head a bit, but he seems to have gotten used to it by now. Additionally, his short talons have become long, wicked black claws that make perching difficult, but should Charles ever engage in combat, they're formidable, perhaps deadly weapons. His eyes have also been changed, to be a bright, phosphorescent blue with a wisp-like effect. Around his neck he wears a baubled blue scarf - a memento of the Trial and a memory of all the family he'd lost.

His gemstone is a small rocky clump of vanadinite on his butt, usually hidden by feathers, but visible during flight or when he lifts his tail.

Chatty - Romantic - Spirited - Hopeful - Imaginative - Persistant

Perhaps a little posh and formal upon first meeting, Charles may surprise anyone with the amount of personality he carries with him. But its not exactly subtle, nor is it hard to work out what kind of a creature he is, considering he never actually shuts up. He somehow always finds something to be blabbing about, either about himself or the people around him or, more often then not, the world they're travelling. He has an appreciation and love for nature and beauty, finding almost everything in the world appealing to the eye and finding the good in everything he sets his eyes on. It's not hard when the world he used to know was nothing but a dark cave. It's difficult to dash his high spirits, as he has the incredible ability of finding the good in everything and everyone, making it more then easy to befriend this friendly bird.

His time spent in isolation, instead of oppressing his thinking and imagination, has done nothing but expand his sights, perhaps a little too far, far enough that he oftentimes has trouble thinking about the present and will drift off into imagining the future and what's coming next. It was easy to do, back then, to think about a world where he and his family were free rather then oppressed and punished constantly by their superiors. It's also made him rather stubborn and persistent - once he puts his mind to something, there's no stopping him. He'll do anything to achieve that future.

When it comes to his family, Charles has nothing but love. They grew up in darkness together and would gladly die for any of them, sometimes viewing their lives as more important then his own. He views them as creatures that have more potential and have more of a right to live then him, since he sees himself as "nothing more then a hopeful fool". Perhaps, in this new trial, he wouldn't be so upset to see others die, as death is not a concept he is either familiar with or fully understands, but if it were from a member of his family, he would be devastated and filled with grief, the concept of death hitting him at last - the one thing that could dampen his spirits and put a muzzle on his constant chatter.
