Appearance
Cortex is really just your average raccoon. Grubby paws, a bushy tail, and a mask to accent his constant angry expression.
He is about 40 centimeters (16 inches) long and weighs about 5 kilograms (11 pounds) once fully grown. He has four legs, each with a paw with five toes on each foot, and though he lacks thumbs, he is still adept at using his hands to lift and acutely manipulate objects. Therefore he can use various tools and carry things, even walking (awkwardly) on his hind legs for short distances. He is melanistic and his fur is a dark grey all over with a darker undercoat, with banded black markings on his tail and a dark mask over his nose and eyes. His face is white and his eyes are heterochromatic, one a bright gold and the other a bright blue. He has excellent night vision and can climb trees and other structures. He isn’t as adept as a squirrel or other arboreal species but he’s perfectly comfortable in any space he lives in and adapts very quickly to any environment. On one of his forefingers is his gem, which replaces the second finger’s claw, acting as an extremely sharp blade meant for cutting, acting as a sort of scalpel. Personality
Cortex sees the world as inherently flawed, specifically the beings in it. He finds them ignorant and often stupid, since most of them go about living like animals, only eating, drinking, and sleeping. Very few people bother to learn about the world they even live in! There is so much to know about the flora and fauna and the caves themselves- forget the Masters and the people and the politics.
He wants to see the insides and outsides of anything he can, his thirst for knowledge and skill unquenchable. Rarely does he even get along with people unless they are like him, like-minded and interested in what the caves have to offer. Unfortunately, Cortex has a severe case of an angry resting face, making him look grumpy or even mean, which can put off many. To counter that, though, he is chipper and enthusiastic about his work, intent on learning and putting his learnings and new skills into action. He will go to great lengths to pursue his work, even if it means hurting people in the process. Most of the time, though, he tends to take notes on various plants and memorizes their properties with his photographic memory, which makes it easy to remember things off the top of his head.
