Appearance

Easy to miss. Fully grown, Cycad will only be 10 inches long, and half of that is a slender tail with a black brush of hair on the end. Like most obscure marsupials, he's a touch alien for a mammal and seems like a mishmash of more familiar animals. His body is all hind legs, and he hops along like a tiny kangaroo; pausing now and again to stand on his toes and have a good look around, or suddenly rushing forward with that uncomfortably fast rodent zoom. His fore paws are delicate and clever, made for grasping and manipulating. A batty set of ears sit on his shrewish head, and he has the wide, saucer eyes of a night dweller. His fur is dense and quite soft to the touch and warm sandy gray in color, with a pale underbelly and a dark dorsal stripe. Mousy, but a mouse he is not; should he open his jaws, a mouthful of shiny white needle teeth glitter in the cave dusk. Woe betide all crickets, worms, and spiders--or the ears and tails of any larger creature that should be unfortunate enough to raise his ire.

He draws his power from a kernel of pyrite embedded in his chest. The tiny chunk of fool's gold is deeply embedded (relatively speaking) and barely crests over his fur. Onlookers may catch a glint of it when he stands on his hind legs.

Personality

Cycad is deeply torn between a fierce desire to be taken seriously as a gembound and his sharp awareness that many of the cave's inhabitants could kill him by pure accident. Still a child, he resents his size and has yet to learn to enjoy the advantages it could bring him. He is plagued by the self-doubt and bitterness caused by constantly comparing himself to others. In short, he needs to grow up.

In interacting with others, Cycad is mostly forced to keep a low profile; but he can be boastful when he thinks he can get away with it, and takes no end of delight in tricking and generally causing mischief for larger creatures. He perceives mastery of magic as his "path to power," so to speak--along with, perhaps, politics, although he's too young to fully grasp what that really means. He can be a bully, when the rare opportunity presents itself.

He's not without a good side. Cycad is deeply loyal to those who treat him with a grain of decency, and he has moments of remarkable bravery. He's very helpful when he can be, and as much as he can sometimes be a bully, he's just as likely to stand up in defense of another creature that's being bullied. The little marsupial ultimately just wants to be respected, and time will tell if he learns to gain that respect through villainy, heroics, or some other path.
