Appearance

Dark is a skittish beast, and it shows in his form as well as his movements. The only word one could really apply to the owl is "ugly"--clumsy, disproportionate, and scraggly.

He seems somewhat thin and malnourished, even shivering, with what will eventually become ragged feathers and sagging wings. What should be a rich tawny is instead dusky dull grey-brown, countershaded with creamy white and barred with black. Most striking in the plain owl are his clearly-blind eyes--they shimmer green with a gem that lies behind them, filling both sockets and the space behind and between, leaving him blinking wide-eyed and unseeing. That is, when they open; as a youngster not yet familiar with, well, existing, Dark's eyes often still remain closed and bulging. The seer, the creature that should spy all in the dark, sees nothing at all.

His long, black talons--two in front, two behind, on each foot--grip at the stone as if to cling on, rather than out of any aggression or confidence. Likewise, the hooked black beak seems to more often click with unease or outright fear than with hostility.

Though blind, Dark's hearing--like that of all owls--is superb. He can hear a mouse twitching hundreds of yards away. And so, given a bit of sound to echo off of the cave walls, he could likely navigate relatively well, once he learns to fly; but in the absence of sound, flying is a dangerous prospect indeed. And flying alone doesn't help--an owl's flight is silent, which means that even he can't hear his wings beat.

Of course, blindness brings its own set of problems, particularly for an animal that moves at high speed without the ground to orient himself--flight is risky as a baseline, potentially deadly at worst. As a result, Dark will often be found shuffling along the rocks, wings shifting as he orients himself to the side of a tunnel, even after he fledges. A curious habit of his is his lingering at certain points, talons delicately closing over a rock or plant for long periods of time as he seems to ponder it. Surely it doesn't take all that much investigation for even a blind beast to recognize stone...?

Another issue is prey. Hunting requires sight, and flight, and Dark has neither. How he will survive in the caves is a tricky prospect at best. Perhaps he'll find enough carrion to survive; maybe he'll learn to stalk like a cat, and a short burst of flight will be his feline pounce. Or maybe he'll need to find some companions to aid him in survival. Only time will tell.

Personality

The word that some might use to describe Dark's place would be, "Mystic." But even that is generous. His mind is half-lost to the darkness in which he resides, his thoughts wandering the same black to which his vision has fallen. A series of babbling thoughts and meandering curiosity drives the bird, and he's quick to flee from danger--real or perceived. It's difficult to tell whether his ramblings might be glorious vision, or damaged insanity.

His personality in itself is mild, inoffensive, easily-spooked and always on edge, and, in truth, mostly absent. Despite being entirely non-social, his crooked thought processes are likely to pull him into all sorts of interactions--yet his inability to read social situations may thus put him in serious danger. For example, a normal creature might recognize a harsh tone or a predatory stare--or the gathering of angry-faced beasts staring their way.

For Dark, who cannot see and who--even if he could--cannot read social cues in the slightest, these situations might be far more likely to lead him into fatal error.

For all the blind owl's fear and obliviousness, however, there is one powerful force in his personality: drive. Drive for what? It's hard to say. But surely it is not merely insanity that drives him to grip stones in his talons for hours on end, or listen to an empty corridor for a day? Surely his determined shuffling along the stone, yard after yard, mile after mile, leads to some distant goal? Whatever it is, the owl won't explain.

Or maybe he would, if he could.

History

Dark was born in Tunnel J, where he was found by Bevy, the small black-and-red bird. And it's a good thing, too: Louie the fox wanted nothing more than to plague and terrify and torment Dark right from his hatching.

But Bevy found him, and guided him to Pisces, where alongside her he eventually joined with Maji Walezi, the guardians of Origin Cave's water supply.

As a scout and guardian he served as best a blind owl could, using his magic to listen, learn and--by confusing the minds of his enemies--fight. He often spent his time alone, in his nest either in Pisces, or the other he kept in Cetus.

He took part in the fights against the great dragon Raheerah, using his mind to confuse the creature. At Maji Walezi's eighth meeting, he was declared to be a proven member by this action--only to get quite literally in the crossfire of a fight that broke out due to Bevy's increasing insanity.

Injured and confused, the blind owl fled to an icy tunnel to try and recover alone, only to be found by the twisted Belladonna and her companion, Dianysma. The two tormented, plagued and beat the owl until there was no chance of his survival, and then left him to die.

Dark's last moments were back in the tunnel where he'd hatched, where he dragged himself to die. His magic misfiring madly, he caught random glimpses of a future, and did his best to send warnings to Leon and Belladonna--and forgiveness to the latter, as well.

Dark is now no more.
