Appearance

Doctor is a heavy-bodied bird, weighing around twenty-three to twenty-four pounds when fully-grown and healthy. He has a wingspan of just over nine feet from wingtip to wingtip. His body itself is feathered in rich, coffee shades of varying dark browns; a ruff of paler feathers, fluffy and light, encircle his neck and also frame his face. Dark feathers stretch up along the throat and run in a masking line to surround the eyes. His beak is thick, broad and hooked, a very dark and steely gray at the tip, and a bluer gray where it touches the feathers. Unlike some vulture species with wholly naked necks, his type instead has the strange, almost hooded cloak of brown feathers along his neck and head, flaring out to shroud his face.

Doctor's eyes are gemstones, formed of what looks like eerie buttons: a striated "Schalenblende" stone, or layered type of Sphalerite, replacing both within the sockest and extending to replace a bit of skull beneath the skin. These stones are layered, translucently cloudy dark grey, and replaced his eyes around Halloween 2022 via an unwilling mutation granted by another very questionable physician. Doctor is therefore blind in the traditional sense; he cannot see close detail, or trees, writing, and so forth. He can see heat signatures, and this Predator-like vision at least allows him to clumsily navigate and to feed, but finding carrion is harder than it was. Both eyes are ringed with a narrow band of pale skin but this is now hidden by his pair of enchanted goggles, which grant him a sort of close-up, medical X-Ray vision at the cost of dealing with a strange entity that seems bound to them and offers questionable advice.

The bird moves with gentle movements, for the most part--considered and soft. His voice is gentle, if brisk, and his demeanor overall--his entire body language--is friendly, even kindly. His appearance makes him seem to be quite the friendly fellow, with a good nature and an attentive (if half-blind) gaze.

Personality

An intensely curious, highly intelligent mind drives this otherwise soft-spoken, kindly-seeming, gentle-mannered Gembound. Doctor wishes to discover how everything works: how, precisely, magic functions; how Gembound are created, age, and reproduce; how the gemstones and magic all interact; how illness develops, where it comes from, how it affects them; what factors might affect recovery from injury...

The end-game goal is complete knowledge widespread throughout the caves, with nothing about sickness, magic or mortality working in mystery. Doctor's intent is to work toward a future where a system is in place, and information is gathered and shared, so that ignorance does not rule. A society where one can find out what is wrong with them, and have it treated; or can reproduce with a full knowledge of what will happen; or can predict with accuracy the results of damage to their stone.

For this, a logically scientific process must be developed. It is for the advancement of all. A rigorous system of testing. It is the only path toward progress. A large enough sample size is required, to rule out flukes, to ensure accurate results. This is for the benefit of the caves. Sacrifices must be made, of course, and we cannot spare the individual--the whole is worth so much more. Pain in the present is nothing compared to the utopia we will achieve when we push for it.

Of course, not all may agree with such things; and so, one must keep a smile on his face, hmm? And a welcome extended to one's patients.

And a welcome is easy to keep, for this Gembound appears wholly non-violent, his demeanor charming and charismatic. He certainly has no interest in power over others; his desire is only for knowledge. As of October 2022, Doctor's newfound partial blindness (moreso than before, anyway) may hamper his entire life's purpose. It remains to be seen how this will affect both the vulture and his life and personality.
